The apparatus includes a tiltable frame with support arm, a grinding wheel coupled to the support arm, and an idler wheel assembly to supply mechanical feedback to the grinding wheel through the support arm. The mechanical feedback allows the grinding wheel to remove hardbanding accurately and uniformly on tubulars that are eccentric, curved, or have eccentric hardbanding. The tiltable frame enables grinding of tapered sections of the tubular without reorienting the tubular. The method includes removing hardbanding using the apparatus.

    Abstract: A cutting element and chamfering tool for pipe preparation is disclosed. The cutting element is formed from a ring having a split defining ends of the ring. One of the ends has a cutting edge. The one end is offset from the other to present the cutting edge to the pipe end. The ring has an inwardly facing angularly oriented surface that receives and centers the pipe end. The chamfer is cut when the ring and pipe end are rotated relatively to one another. The tool has a housing that holds the cutting element. The ends of the ring are offset when the ring engages a helical seat within the housing and/or when a radial set screw engaging the one end is tightened.

    Abstract: A debeading tool capable of internally debeading butt-welded pipe made of PVC and similarly hard plastics has a work head that can be coupled to a distal end of a torque tube. The work head includes a motor carrying a cutter which is oriented at an angle, e.g., 12 degrees, to the interior pipe wall for cutting the weld bead as the tool is rotated inside the pipe. The work head cutter can be moved between an insertion/removal position away from the side wall and a cutting position against the bead on the side wall. A locator assembly that contacts the bead during insertion of the work head aids in positioning the cutter to straddle the weld bead. A pipe cleaner can be prepositioned in the pipe before butt-welding to be engaged upon removal of the work head to pull weld bead chips and fines from the pipe.

An annular air ring is disposed around the pneumatic tool, covering an air inlet port. Air is supplied by any route to a first air passage that supplies the air to the interior of the annular air ring, exerting a force on the annular air ring. Air flows in the annular space of the air ring, entering the tool air inlet port to drive the pneumatic tool. One or more second air passages are connected to the annular air ring in an even radial distribution. Each second air passage is connected to the air source, or terminates in an air blockage, creating a column of pressurized air that exerts a force on the annular air ring equal to the first air passage. The forces exerted on the air ring are thus balanced with respect to the axis of the tool.
