With Means To Dampen Vibration Patents (Class 409/141)
  • Patent number: 7201546
Abstract: When a rotary table rotates, a main control section of a multi-tasking machine detects vibration of the rotary table on which a workpiece is mounted based on fluctuation of a position droop computed by a servo system. The main control section computes the arrangement position (the eccentricity amount and the eccentricity angle) of the workpiece with respect to the rotary table based on, for example, the detected vibration, the weight of the workpiece, and the rotation speed of the rotary table. The main control section computes the attachment position of a balancer with respect to the rotary table based on the computed arrangement position of the workpiece. Therefore, a suitable attachment position of a vibration suppressing balancer with respect to the rotary table is easily obtained.

  • Patent number: 7160066
Abstract: A mounting arrangement 1 is provided in which clamping pairs comprising a clamping pad 2 and seating pads 3 are arranged about a mounting end of a component 4. Thus, the component 4 is appropriately presented to a machining device but the component 4 can slip relative to the pads 2, 3 in order to relieve residual stresses in the component due to initial forging processes. A damper 8 is provided in order to augment vibration control in association with the contact abutments between the pads 2, 3. In such circumstances accurate machining of a component 4 to a final profile 6 from an initial rough profile 5 can be achieved more efficiently without periodic release of the component 4 so that distortions are avoided in the final component as a result of retained residual stresses by previous clamping.

Abstract: In milling operations, periodically sensed vibration signals synchronous with tool revolution enables a determination of whether the tool returns to approximately the same position each revolution. If so, stability is indicated by tightly grouped values of the periodically sensed vibration signal. If the tool does not return to the same position, spread in the value of the periodically sampled vibration signals is produced thereby indicating chatter conditions. Variance values may be calculated and displayed; histograms may be produced and displayed; corrective action, if needed, may be taken in response to the variance values and/or histogram. Nominal (or commanded) spindle speed, while not necessarily exactly synchronous with actual tool rotation, is entirely adequate to trigger samples and achieve clear indication of the presence or absence of chatter.

Abstract: A vibration dampened spindle and tool holder assembly for a rotary cutting machine. The assembly includes a spindle and a tool holder retained therewith. The tool holder has an interfacing ledge with a top surface for abutment with a distal spindle surface, and a continuous channel disposed in a proximal portion of the top surface. A resilient dampening member, having a rectangular or a circular cross sectional configuration, resides in the channel for compressed abutment with the spindle surface. Because the dampening member is situated within the channel, the interfacing placement of the spindle surface and tool holder top surface meet as the dampening member is enshrouded in the channel by these abutting surfaces and thereby protected from contaminant entry during dampening action.

Abstract: A method and apparatus mitigates vibration associated with the rotary cutting machines by providing a first dampening member which is disposed around a tool holder and positioned so as to be compressed intermediate the tool holder and spindle of the rotary cutting machine. A cutting tool is shrink fit to the tool holder. A neck is formed in an elongate shank of cutting tool and has dampening material disposed thereabout. The dampening material disposed around the tool holder, the dampening material disposed around the neck, and the shrink fitting of the cutting tool to the tool holder cooperate so as to minimize undesirable vibration of the cutting tool.

Abstract: A balance weight has first and second margins at right angles to one another with the second margin larger than the first margin. A balance weight groove in a rotor has outer and inner wall portions, with the outer wall portions spaced a distance less than the spacing between the inner wall portions. The balance weight has a central threaded opening receiving a screw and a driving slot in the upper face of the weight. An insertion tool is threaded to the balance weight to insert the balance weight through a turbomachinery access opening into the groove. The tool is rotated to locate the second margins below the outer wall portions of the groove. By inserting a driving tool through the insertion tool, the screw is rotated to lock the balance weight to the rotor and in the groove. Upon removal of the insertion and driving tools, a staking tool is inserted through turbine access opening to stake the balance weight and rotor and the screw and balance weight.

Abstract: A method for automatically minimizing an undesirable motion of a workpiece during a machining operation, and a universal adaptive machining chatter control fixture that operates in accordance with the method. The method comprises the steps of mounting the workpiece to an active, supporting structure, and then machining the workpiece. During the step of machining, an undesirable motion of the workpiece is sensed in the supporting structure. Thereafter, a compensating motion is applied to the supporting structure for minimizing the undesirable motion of the workpiece. The chatter control fixture can be attached to various types of machine tool devices, without requiring that the machine tool devices be retrofitted, and operates to minimize undesirable motions of the workpiece independently of the machine tool devices.

  • Patent number: 6189426
Abstract: Methods of and apparatuses for mitigating chatter vibrations in machine tools or components thereof. Chatter therein is suppressed by periodically or continuously varying the stiffness of the cutting tool (or some component of the cutting tool), and hence the resonant frequency of the cutting tool (or some component thereof). The varying of resonant frequency of the cutting tool can be accomplished by modulating the stiffness of the cutting tool, the cutting tool holder, or any other component of the support for the cutting tool. By periodically altering the impedance of the cutting tool assembly, chatter is mitigated. In one embodiment, a cyclic electric (or magnetic) field is applied to the spindle quill which contains an electro-rheological (or magneto-rheological) fluid. The variable yield stress in the fluid affects the coupling of the spindle to the machine tool structure, changing the natural frequency of oscillation.

Angular position and speed detecting devices are used for detecting angular positions and speeds of each of the spindles.
