The horizontal insert is characterized by a generally cylindrical quill housing designed for insertion between the bottom column element and top ram element of a Bridgeport-type milling machine or secured to a plate so mounted. In the first embodiment the bottom surface of the quill housing is bolted to the top surface of the column and the upper surface of the quill housing is bolted to the bottom surface of the turret.
