Abstract: Devices are described relating to the retaining of surgical tools within the chuck of a reciprocating surgical instrument, such as a reciprocating saw. A securing chuck is disclosed for securing a surgical tool to a reciprocating surgical instrument that comprises a shaft and a securing member. The shaft defines an axis and has a cylindrical bore extending along the axis. The bore is shaped to receive a substantially rounded tool shank. A pair of transverse slots extends into the shaft along a plane passing through the axis for receiving a substantially flattened tool shank. The transverse slots intersect with the cylindrical bore. The securing member is carried by the shaft and is radially movable relative to the bore both inwardly and outwardly to secure the surgical tool in the chuck.

Abstract: A retention knob for use with a tool holder that is less prone to distorting a tapered tool holder surface, especially if it is over-tightened. The retention knob includes a knob head, a flange engageable with an end of a tool holder shank, a pilot segment receivable by the counter bore defined by said tool holder shank and a threaded segment spaced from said flange by an undercut segment. The threaded segment is configured so that it has a length that is substantially the minimum length required to achieve maximum thread holding strength. The undercut segment is configured to space the threaded segment from its head so that a distal end of the threaded segment is substantially near the bottom of the tapered bore forming part of the tool holder. With the disclosed construction, an upper portion of the threaded tool holder bore is not engaged by the threaded segment. The threaded segment has balanced threads which is achieved by locating the lead-in of the thread 180° from the lead-out of the thread.

Abstract: A tool holder attachment structure includes a spindle and a tool holder. The spindle has a tip end face and a tapered hole. The tool holder has a tapered shank portion and a flange end face. In a clamped state, there is a clearance of a predetermined size between the flange end face of the tool holder and the tip end face of the spindle. As the spindle is rotated, the tapered hole of the spindle is slightly expanded by a centrifugal force caused by rotation of the spindle, and the presence of this clearance allows the tapered shank portion to be further drawn into the tapered hole so that the flange end face of the tool holder closely contacts the tip end face of the spindle, and the tapered shank portion is closely fitted in the tapered hole, whereby two-face restraint is implemented.

The taper member has a conic shape extended along an axial direction with a top section and a bottom section. The flange member is beneath the bottom section of the taper member. The holder member is extended downward from a bottom side of the flange member along the axial direction. The clamped member is extended upward from the top section of the taper member. The slits are configured at intervals around the bottom section surrounding the axial direction. Each slit defines a slightly outwardly bulge. The bulges increase the contact area with and avoid gaps to a tapered socket of a spindle. As such, the tool shank is tightly jointed to the spindle during high-speed rotation without causing vibration and damage.

Abstract: The embodiments described herein relate to methods, systems, and structures for cutting a part to form a highly reflective and smooth surface thereon. In some embodiments, the part includes substantially horizontal and vertical surfaces with edges and corners. In described embodiments, a diamond cutter is used to cut a surface of the part during a milling operation where the diamond cutter contacts the part a number of times with each rotation of the spindle of a milling machine. The diamond cutter has a cutting edge and a land. The cutting edge cuts the surface of the part and the land burnishes the surface of the part to form a highly reflective and smooth surface. Thus, the diamond cutter cuts and burnishes portions of the part, thereby eliminating a subsequent polishing step.

The keyed recess can be integral with the tool holder or can be a separate positioning chuck rotationally and axially secured within the tool holder. The cutting tool is inserted into the collet and has multiple edges and/or multiple flats formed on a keyed end of shank that are matingly received by the keyed recess to prevent relative rotation between the tool holder and the cutting tool and make the cutting tool rotationally and axial fixed within the tool holder. The keyed recess includes a spacer preventing the keyed end of the cutting tool from contacting a base of the keyed recess, thereby preventing radial misalignment of the cutting with the axis of the tool holder from the axial translation and force applied during tightening of the collet nut and collet.
