  • Patent number: 10493541
Abstract: A broaching tool is held during the conduct of repetitive duplicate rotary broaching operations on serially presented workpieces. The broaching tool is engaged serially with each workpiece for rotation with the engaged workpiece during a corresponding rotary broaching operation. Each workpiece has a given configuration and the broaching tool has a prescribed configuration placed at an initial orientation for establishing a broached configuration placed at a same predetermined orientation relative to the given configuration of each workpiece. Upon completion of a rotary broaching operation on a workpiece, the broaching tool is returned to the initial orientation of the prescribed configuration in preparation for a duplicate rotary broaching operation on a subsequent serially presented workpiece.

  • Patent number: 8070401
Abstract: An improved centrifugally-cast tube is provided, along with a related method and apparatus of making the tube. The tube includes a plurality of grooves and bosses that are mechanically machined into an interior surface of the tube, such as by a broaching process. The profile of grooves and bosses may be defined by a plurality of intersecting concave and convex radii. The tube is resistant to creep, carburization and metal dusting. The tube also has an enhanced heat transfer rate, and a desirable surface roughness. A method of making the tube is also provided. The method essentially consists of mechanically deforming the interior surface of the tube by passing a series of cutting inserts on support rings having incrementally-differing dimensions over the interior surface.

  • Publication number: 20100104390
Abstract: The invention relates to a broaching tool, in particular a keyway broaching tool, comprising a holder which defines a longitudinal axis and has a shank, extending in the longitudinal direction, as support for a cutting body which can be fixed in a seat of the shank by means of a clamping device. The seat has a passage which is at a distance from the free end of the shank and extends transversely to the longitudinal axis and the inside of which forms guide surfaces for bearing surfaces of the cutting body, which can be inserted into the passage in an insertion direction. An end-position limit for the inserted cutting body is formed on guide surfaces and on associated bearing surfaces. The clamping device produces a force component on the cutting body which presses the latter against the end-position limit.

  • Patent number: 7402011
Abstract: A device for centering a work piece with respect to a centerline of a tool includes a radially-stationary component rigidly secured with respect to the tool such that the radially-stationary component and the tool are concentric. A biasing mechanism is biased away from the radially-stationary component to apply substantially equally-distributed radial force at a periphery of the work piece to thereby center the work piece with respect to the tool. A method of broaching a work piece having an inner and an outer diameter includes machining the outer diameter and then applying circumferentially-distributed radial force to the inner diameter or the outer diameter to thereby center the work piece with respect to a broach tool. • Patent number: 4294568
Abstract: A series of adjacent grooves with mutually equal pitch are produced by a broaching process wherein two adjacent grooves are simultaneously produced in one broaching stroke by means of two broaching tools, one of which performs the preliminary broaching of a first groove and the other of which performs the finish broaching of a second groove which was preliminarly broached on a previous stroke. A preferred device for execution of the process is formed by utilization of a broaching girder which secures a T-shaped supporting strip, and wherein two tools, one a preliminary broaching tool and the other a final broaching tool, are secured in the angular position of the pitch of the grooves to be produced between respective sides of the T-shaped supporting strip and claws of the broaching girder.

  • Patent number: 4266894
Abstract: The machine of the invention comprises a base designed to accomodate a blank being machined, and a mandrel with a broach connected to a hydraulic drive imparting movement thereto. The mandrel is provided with a guide located between a broach-supporting end of the mandrel and its other, fixed end. The guide has a passage for the mandrel in the course of inside broaching in the blank. According to one of the embodiments of the invention, the guide is made as a traverse resting against uprights fixed on the base. The traverse has a guide passage for the broach-supporting mandrel and two holes arranged symmetrically with respect to the guide passage and serving as guides for the rods of hydraulic cylinders of the machine hydraulic drive. Each one of the hydraulic cylinders is located partly in the base and partly in the upright. The rods are interconnected above the traverse with a cross-piece supporting the mandrel with broach.

  • Patent number: 4180360
Abstract: A broach pulling mechanism is provided utilizing puller jaws which engage with a significantly larger circumferential groove at the end of the broach to pull the broach through a workpiece without any vertical drop of the broach in the puller mechanism during any part of the broaching operation. To accomplish this a piston assembly is mounted at the bottom of the broach pulling mechanism to allow the end of the broach to bottom thereon. The piston assembly is controllably pressurized to lock a wall of the groove of the broach end between the puller jaws and the piston assembly thereby preventing any movement or dropping of the broach due to a loose fit of the jaws with respect to the groove throughout the entire broaching operation.
