    Abstract: A washer (390) for a threaded fastener assembly and a threaded fastener assembly (100) incorporating such a washer. The washer (390) comprises a body having a central axis including two opposed sides (391, 392) an outer periphery (393) and an inner periphery defining a central aperture (394) extending between the two opposed sides. The body incorporates an engaging face (396) for frictionally engaging a component of the threaded fastener assembly or a work-piece. A ramp structure (340) extends angularly between the inner periphery and one side (392) for interacting with a further component of the threaded fastener assembly to provide a mechanical connection therebetween for resisting unthreading of the threaded fastener assembly. The engaging face (396) is associated with the other side (391) and extends circumferentially about the central axis.

    Abstract: A locking fastener assembly comprising a nut and a washer. The nut and washer each have opposed load bearing surfaces which include a series of annularly extending, slightly inclined faces forming shallow undulations around each surface. The load bearing surface on the nut is generally spherically convex and the load bearing surface on the washer is generally spherically concave. The nut rotates as it is installed while the washer is prevented from rotating so that the undulating bearing surface on the nut slides over the undulating bearing surface on the washer against ever increasing resistance until the assembly is properly seated and the nut is effectively prevented from counter-rotating by interference between opposed, inclined faces. A concave clamping surface is formed on the outer end of the washer on a radially extending flange. The flange flexes when the assembly is installed and resiliently urges the washer against the nut.

    Abstract: A two-piece lock washer for use with a variety of fasteners wherein the lock washer itself includes a pair of components having opposite end opposing surfaces formed with a plurality of inclined ramps and locking faces so that when the components are pressed together, the ramps will ride upon each other as the fastener is turned until locking faces engage where locking is produced. The lock washer includes a central opening through which the shank of a fastener is passed and an exterior surface of the washer bears against the workpiece while the exterior surface of the other component bears against the head of the fastener. Thereby axial compression of the lock washer components causes the locking faces of the ramps to engage as the fastener is tightened against the workpiece. Backing off is prevented due to locking face engagement and the provision of radial ribs bearing against the fastening nut and the workpiece.

The serrations (23) efficaciously bite into the head's undersurface (40), providing a tight engagement of fastener (39) to the bearing surface (45), and one which eliminates looseness in the fastener (39) upon a thermal expansion of the metal of the elements.
