Nut Penetrates Substructure And Anchors Itself Thereto (e.g., Pierce Nut) Patents (Class 411/179)
  • Patent number: 4486930
Abstract: An apparatus for severing a lead nut from a linear arrangement of attached nuts and for securing such a lead nut to carrier material is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a punch operated by a ram and disposed within a stripper, and a die disposed within a nut guide and secured to a fixed base. The punch is spring biased within the stripper and is oriented towards the die in such a manner that advancement of the punch toward the die also advances the punch tip towards the die cavity. The nut guide is spring biased away from the base. The nut guide includes two interconnecting passageways, one passageway being laterally disposed toward the other. An arrangement of attached nuts is advanceable, within the first nut guide passageway, toward the die surface. The carrier material is supported upon an upper surface of the nut guide, being interposed between the punch and the die.

  • Patent number: 4459073
Abstract: A self-piercing fastener, such as a stud bolt, for attachment to a panel or the like. The fastener includes a fastener portion, such as a threaded shank, and a self-piercing and riveting end portion. The end portion includes a central recess enclosed by a self-piercing and riveting wall on at least opposed sides of the recess. The wall has an internal surface terminating in a sharp piercing edge at its distal end which is adapted to pierce an opening in the panel. The recess terminates in a bottom wall which is preferably spaced from the piercing edge of the wall a distance greater than the thickness of the panel.

  • Patent number: 4449878
Abstract: A clinch type nail having a generally flat shank with a pair of spaced penetrating portions having inner and outer walls that are disposed in angular relationship with each other and intersect along a generally straight line. The outer walls offer more resistance to penetration than the inner walls when the nail is driven which causes the penetrating portions to clinch inwardly toward each other and capture a plug of the material into which the nail is driven.

  • Patent number: 4439907
Abstract: An abrasive disc includes a rotatable sheet. Abrasive particles are disposed on a first side of the sheet to provide an abrasive action. Coupled to the sheet means are (1) a first portion defining at least one internal thread in spaced relationship to the opposite surface of the sheet for threaded coupling with an externally threaded mandrel, (2) a second portion extending from the first portion along the opposite surface of the sheet and providing a transmittal of force from the first portion and (3) a third portion extending from the second portion into coupled relationship with the sheet and receiving the transmitted force and providing a force for driving the sheet means. The first portion of the coupling defines a boss disposed on the opposite surface of the sheet in spaced relationship to the sheet and having an opening operative as a single-turn internal thread.

  • Patent number: 4430034
Abstract: The present invention provides it possible to finish studding the bolt in one process without drilling on the caulked panels in the processing of studding small bolts on thin steel plates such as steels for automotive body, for example, and also provides, at the same time, the structure of the bolt whereby the physical requisite desired after caulking are extremely stabilized and advanced.

  • Patent number: 4389766
Abstract: An improved fastener includes a polygonal rim which cooperates with an axially projecting center section to define a recess in which sheet material is forced by a die to hold the fastener against rotational and axial movement relative to the sheet material. To improve the gripping action between the fastener and the sheet material, the sheet material is stretched by a tool which extends through the center of the fastener. When a hole is cut in the sheet material by the fastener, the prestretched metal resiliently contracts to grip the center section of the fastener. The gripping action between the sheet material and the fastener is further improved by resiliently compressing the center section of the fastener with the die. As the center section is withdrawn from the die, the center section springs outwardly to decrease the size of the recess and grip the sheet material. In addition, the rim is resiliently deflected radially outwardly by the die as metal is forced into the recess.
