  • Patent number: 10213312
Abstract: During hip replacement surgery, a practitioner can attach a distal stem to a femur of the patient and can then fixedly attach a proximal body to the distal stem using a bolt. Prior to tightening, the bolt can be heated to an elevated temperature greater than average human core body temperature. The practitioner can tighten the bolt to a specified torque while the bolt is at the elevated temperature. After tightening, the bolt cools to average human core body temperature and experiences a tensile stress due to the effects of thermal expansion. The tensile stress in the bolt produces a compressive force between the distal stem and the proximal body. The compressive force can increase the attachment strength of the bolt to the distal stem and the proximal body, beyond what can be achieved by solely torquing the bolt to the specified level during surgery without first heating the bolt.

  • Patent number: 5536122
Abstract: An expansible anchor of metal for anchoring in a hole drilled in masonry has a bolt with several connected expander cones forming a thread and an expansible sleeve provided with an internal thread matching the expanding cones. To achieve high holding fores and low draw-in force, expansible portions are formed at uniform intervals along the internal thread of the expansible sleeve by U-shaped channels. The expansible sleeve is manufactured from powdered metal in an injection molding method using a system of binders combined with subsequent removal of binders and sintering, and an injection-molding tool having a removable thread core for the internal thread of the expansible sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5501551
Abstract: A mechanical expansion anchor and radially expansible shell for use therein having particular application in combination with resin grouting materials. The anchor includes a conventional, tapered camming plug moveable axially upon a mine roof bolt to move the shell leaves outwardly into gripping engagement with the drill hole wall. The shell is distinguished by the provision of grooves in the outer surfaces of the shell leaves, extending between the upper and lower ends of the leaves. Components of a resin mix inserted into the drill hole in advance of the expansion anchor, carried on the end of the bolt, flow through the grooves in the outer leaf surfaces to the area below the anchor.

  • Patent number: 5458448
Abstract: An expansion bolt includes an elongated bolt body having a threaded section formed on one end and an expanded shoulder portion formed on an opposite end. An expansion cylinder slidably fits over the bolt body has a flat end supported by the shoulder and slits formed on the opposite end. An expanding ring has an inclined outer surface with the small end insertable into the slitted end of the expansion cylinder is slidably fit over the bolt body to have the small end thereof facing the slitted end of the expansion cylinder. A collar nut retains the expansion cylinder and the expanding ring on the bolt body with a support cylinder disposed between the collar nut and the expanding ring so that when the nut is tightened, the support cylinder forces the expanding ring toward the expansion cylinder to have the small end of the expanding ring wedge into and thus flaringly expand the slitted end of the expansion cylinder. The flaring tips of the slitted end are forced to be in tight contact engagement with a hole.

  • Patent number: 5284408
Abstract: A self-retaining adjustable diameter bolt assembly including a bolt having a head, a shank, and a threaded end adapted to be inserted into aligned holes in a pair of abutting panels for subsequent coupling to a nut on the blind side of the panels. The bolt includes a pawl engaging one side of the panel in which the bolt is inserted with the head thereof on the opposite side of the panels. A plurality of bushing segments are mounted on the bolt shank, the pawl extending through an opening in the segment adjacent the threaded end of the bolt shank and retained therein by engagement with a slot through the segment while simultaneously being oriented in an operative position therein. A nut, having a skirt portion, is threaded onto the threaded end driving the segments forward and filling the spacing between the holes and the bolt shank. The skirt portion of the nut overlies the pawl and protects the same.

  • Patent number: 5232322
Abstract: A plurality of anchoring members are threaded onto the shaft of the fastener. These anchoring members include an annular body and a spacer. The anchoring members are held between an abutment of the shaft and a locking section thereof fixed against an axial displacement thereon. The anchoring members are present as structural members which are separate from the shaft and are merely threaded onto the shaft. It is accordingly possible to use a large number of variously designed anchoring members together with only one shape of the shaft, which reduces considerably the costs of the production and increases the universality of the fastener. Specifically the shaft and the anchoring members may be made of a metal such that the fastener can display in comparison with plastic fasteners a much higher rigidity.

Abstract: An anchor for securing a mine roof bolt within a hole preformed within a rock strata. The anchor comprises a plurality of transversely bent plastic leaves, each having an aperture through which the roof bolt is received, a support nut threadably connected to the bolt for supporting the plastic leaves, a stirrup supported on the support nut and on which the leaves are rested and a bifurcated compression nut having a biasing member threadably connected to the roof bolt and a horizontal member slidably connected to the bolt below the biasing member and above the leaves for compressing the leaves against the stirrup responsive to the rotation of the roof bolt in a selected direction. As the transversely bent leaves are compressed the edges thereof are urged against the strata to grip the same and thereby secure the roof bolt within the hole. • Patent number: 5143497
Abstract: The expansible plug for fixing an element or frame member on solid or hollow building material, has a plug shank (1) having a plurality of expansion discs (3,4) arranged one after the other along the plug shank (1). The expansion discs (3,4) are provided with eccentric bores (12,13) located so that, without the fixing screw (23) inserted, the bores (12,13) of adjacent discs (3,4) are noncoaxial or staggered with respect to one another and overlap one another and so that the overlapping bores (12,13) form a constricted screw hole (15) through the plug shank (1). When a fixing screw (23) is screwed into the expansible plug the expansion discs (3,4) are displaced laterally so that the bores (12,13) in the expansion disks have a coaxial relationship and the expansion disks (3,4) are displaced laterally outwards from the plug shank to secure the expansible plug in a hole in which it is located.
