Abstract: Non-prismatic shank fasteners, such as nails, for wood and similar soft materials have a plurality of longitudinal extending non-congruent sections having different geometries, different configurations, and varying diameters such that the shank has the widest nominal diameter arranged to span a joint between wood members being fastened. The shank has four circumferentially symmetrically disposed grooves and ridges having dimensions within pre-determined ranges such that the ridges have sufficient strength to withstand the forces imposed on the shank being driven into the parent material and to resist loads imposed upon them by the loads to the parent material. The grooves have a sufficiently wide jaw opening to allow elastically compressed parent material to enter the groove and provide support to the shank. The non-prismatic grooved shanks demonstrate significantly greater load handling capability than that possessed by other known types of fasteners.

  • Patent number: 4815910
Abstract: A plurality of fasteners each having an enlarged head with a slot or a passageway there through to accommodate and cage the shank of another like fastener so that the plurality of fasteners form a self-contained collated strip. Preferably the fastener has at least three spaced vertical cups and edges about a central core with a pair of adjacent edges of one fastener caged in the complimentary slot of the adjacent-like fastener. A notch is provided on such pair of edges to releasably lock the fasteners together in the strip.

  • Patent number: 4781508
Abstract: A nail having a head and a shaft and a plurality of flutes extending from the head down the shaft and projecting outwardly from the axis of the shaft for a distance equal to the radius of the head. The nail is favorably employed in a device for automatically delivering the nail to affix soft material, particularly drywall, foam board and the like, to solid surfaces without disintegrating the material. The lower end of each flute is spaced from the nail head a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the soft material.

  • Patent number: 4762454
Abstract: A support spike securely held by and extending from a wooden object. The spike is oriented parallel to the grain of the wooden object and has an elongated shaft. A hollow longitudinal opening is formed in the point end of the spike. The spike is driven into the wooden object to an extent that the hollow opening extends past the point of entry of the spike so that the wood in the hollow opening is compressed securely holding the spike in place. The spike is particularly useful when driven into the base of a Christmas tree in order to provide a means for holding the tree in an upright position.

  • Patent number: 4755091
Abstract: A star shaped fastener having at least five spaced vertical cups and edges about a central core with the included angle being 90.degree. reducing the fabricated material by 50% and increasing the surface area by 15% compared to a common round nail of equal radius. The holding power is significantly enhanced by compression laterally and vertically into cups, shoulders therein and/or a taper of less than 14.degree..

  • Patent number: 4666345
Abstract: An elongate hollow rock bolt, bolt installations, and process of effecting the same, wherein the bolt is slightly over-size relative to the transverse cross-section of the mine roff hole or aperture in which the bolt is to be installed. The bolt has a radial, transverse polygonal cross-section formed by contiguous deflectable resilient sides provided with outwardly directed fins, the latter being tapered. When the bolt is impact-forced into a mine roof aperture, the fins are forced inwardly, deflecting the bolt sides which, owing to their resiliency, maintain the fins and the aperture wall areas contacting the same under compression, thus increasing the holding effect upon the bolt. The latter may be grouted in, and also may have a pre-installed bearing plate provided with an aperture and slide-slots accommodating the fins.

  • Patent number: 4661022
Abstract: Rock bolt structure and installation wherein the bolt takes the form of an elongate member having an enlarged head and also an elongate, blade-like shank. The opposite edges at the remote tip of the shank are slightly tapered, this to provide ease of installation in a rock formation hole or aperture. The width of the shank is designed so as to be slightly larger than the diameter of the hole. Thus, when the bolt is driven into the hole, there will be a friction fit and hence a frictional retention of the bolt at its edges by the hole wall. A bearing plate will be provided, the same having a slotted aperture to accommodate the blade-like shank of the bolt. Additionally, a relief aperture will be provided in the bearing plate to accommodate insertion of a grout fitting. The latter is supplied an impact tool, the same also having a relief aperture accommodating the head of the bolt. The opposite sides of the bolt shank are preferably roughened, i.e.

  • Patent number: 4650373
Abstract: An elongate hollow rock structure and installation wherein the elongated shank of the bolt is hollow and has a series of outwardly bowed side or side portions that are capable of resilient deflection. Fin means are provided in sides or side portion, with the overall span of the fin means being greater than the bolt hole into which the bolt is to be impacted. The pin means are tapered so as to provide for ease of insertion of the bolt. Impaction of the bolt into a mine roof hole provides for a compression loading of the fins of the bolt shank such that these engage the aperture wall in a forced-compression state. Corrosion factors are limited to fin edge contact with the aperture wall of the bolt hole. Resilient sides' deformation at the core of the bolt shank is relied upon to compression load the fins for frictional contact with the aperture wall into which the bolt is implaced.

  • Patent number: 4637768
Abstract: Nail-type fastener, comprising an elongated shank (1) with a head at one end, and a point at the other end. The nail shank has three symmetrically placed, longitudinal grooves (4) separated by longitudinal ridges (8) with a cross-sectionally arcuate outer side (9). The grooves have flat, concave or cross-sectionally V-shaped bottom surfaces (27;17;7) and usually side flank surfaces (5) arranged obliquely thereto which connect to the bottom surface via individual corners (6) of small radius of curvature. The cross-sectional shape selected provides a nail with high flexural rigidity and high pull grip with comparatively low weight. The fastener or nail is produced starting from a cross-sectionally circular nail wire stock which is profiled in two coldrolling steps. In the first step, the nail wire passes through a first roller trio, the section rollers of which roll cross-sectionally arcuate guide grooves into the nail wire stock.

  • Patent number: 4588152
Abstract: A wire clamping clip for mounting on a stucco wall is constructed as a block member having a workpiece engaging surface and an exposed top surface. A recess is formed in the workpiece engaging surface for receiving a wire. A throughbore is formed in the block adjacent to the recess and a plastic bushing having a cross sectional dimension of the same shape and slightly smaller than the cross sectional dimension of the throughbore is positioned in the throughbore. A hardened pin with a sharpened end is slidingly received in a tight frictional engagement through the center of the plastic bushing and has an enlarged head for abutting against the top end of said bushing and having a length longer than said bushing so that its sharpened end extends beyond the lower end of said bushing.
