  • Patent number: 8011866
Abstract: A locking fastener assembly comprising a nut and a washer. The nut and washer each have opposed load bearing surfaces which include a series of annularly extending, slightly inclined faces forming shallow undulations around each surface. The load bearing surface on the nut is generally spherically convex and the load bearing surface on the washer is generally spherically concave. The nut rotates as it is installed while the washer is prevented from rotating so that the undulating bearing surface on the nut slides over the undulating bearing surface on the washer against ever increasing resistance until the assembly is properly seated and the nut is effectively prevented from counter-rotating by interference between opposed, inclined faces. A concave clamping surface is formed on the outer end of the washer on a radially extending flange. The flange flexes when the assembly is installed and resiliently urges the washer against the nut.

Abstract: A fastener assembly and a method of fastening are provided that require a low amount of torque for fastening two objects. The fastener assembly includes a key member having an end that may be aligned with apertures in the two objects. The fastener assembly also includes one or more springs that may be compressed to allow the end to be inserted into and through the apertures. Following insertion, the key member may be rotated through the application of a low torque such that its end is no longer aligned with the apertures. The springs may then be uncompressed to cause the springs and the non-aligned end to urge the two objects together.

Abstract: A lockable nut system for use with threaded steel bar which includes a screw threaded nut for engagement with the threaded steel bar and a locking member which is slidably engageable with the bar. The locking member is adapted to resist rotation about the bar and is also axially engageable with the nut to prevent rotation of the nut. The locking member has one or more fingers to engage the nut with an end of the finger being displaced to engage the nut as a result of deformation of a finger actuating tab or a dished body of the locking member. The locking member may engage the bar by displacement of an end of at least one tongue as a result of deformation of a tongue actuating tab during compression between the nut and a second structure.

Abstract: A wheel nut and washer assembly for securing a wheel to a motor vehicle axle. The wheel nut includes a body having a longitudinal axis, the nut body also having an axial threaded aperture and a pair of ends, one end being in the form of a smooth steel external surface. The wheel nut also includes a steel washer having an end terminating in a smooth annular surface in surface-to-surface engagement with the body end thereby maintaining axially alignment of the body and washer enabling relative movement of said body and washer about said axis. A decorative cap on the assembly is configured so that it holds the washer on the nut, a gap between the cap and washer to enable the washer to freely rotate and move laterally relative to the nut.

Abstract: A wheel lug nut having a laminated nut and an attached nose that is shaped to be interfitted with the nut seat of the wheel. In use, the nose centers both the lug nut relative to the wheel bolt it receives and the wheel relative to the axle hub. The laminated nut includes a plurality of conical disc springs enclosed in a cage. When properly tightened, the disc springs deform to impart additional gripping force on the wheel bolt. Accordingly, the laminated nut provides additional resistance to loosening, even when used with a non-ferrous wheel. In one embodiment, the nose is attached to the cage, for example, by snap-fitting onto the base of the cage. The wheel lug nut may also include a removable decorative cap that encloses and protects the cage and the wheel bolt. The decorative cap may be removably attached to the nose.
