Abstract: A bowed snap-disc includes inner and outer perimeters that provide the disc with operating characteristics not found in comparably sized discs. At certain points along its circumference, the inner perimeter extends farther from the disc's center than certain other points of the disc's outer perimeter. This provides the disc with a unique combination of spring constant, compressive force, deflection and coefficient of compliance. The disc is particularly useful as a small, flat compression spring; a shaft or bar locking element; tightness indicator for a threaded fastener; or a lock washer.

  • Patent number: 6554555
Abstract: With the object of obtaining a reliable grounding of the antenna, even if the panel of the vehicle is deformed or the elasticity of the base pad or O-ring weakens, a washer portion 21 is integrally secured to a nut portion 20 via a wave washer 22. This securing is performed by mounting a joint portion 23 in washer portion 21, and by mating protuberances 23e of second protruding pieces 23d of joint portion 23 with a ring-shaped groove portion 20b that is formed inside a first through-hole 20a of nut portion 20. Even if the vehicle panel the antenna is mounted, and so forth, is deformed, or the stress on the antenna-mounting nut 6 weakens, this change is absorbed by wave washer 22, and thus a marked reduction in the press-contacting force of the antenna-mounting nut 6 does not occur, and the grounding of same is made reliable.

  • Publication number: 20020187020
Abstract: A lock washer for locking a threaded fastener from loosening under vibration includes an annular body with a central opening cutting from a sheet or plate of Nitinol, and an integral layer of NiTiOx on at least one face of said body. The lock washer is made of a high transition temperature form of Type 55 Nitinol that remains in its martensitic state in all normal conditions of use. The martensitic Nitinol initially yields during torquing of the nut to allow the nut to indent itself slightly into the lock washer. The resulting cold working of the washer material causes a transformation into stress-induced martensite, which is strong and elastic to resist further deformation and also exerts a preload on the bolt shank. The nut, indented into the lock washer, strongly resists turning under vibration, which effect is further enhanced by the vibration absorbing characteristics of the material. The integral layer of NiTiOx on the surface of the washer provides electrical insulation, minimizing galvanic corrosion.

  • Patent number: 6468011
Abstract: A fastener assembly includes a threaded fastener having an axial shaft. A spring is disposed coaxially around the shaft and is capable of compression and expansion in the longitudinal direction defined by the shaft. First and second stops are disposed along the shaft. The spring is pre-compressed and is disposed between the stops so that its expansion is limited by the stops. One end of the spring is mechanically coupled to a work piece. When the fastener is turned, relative displacement develops between the shaft and the work piece. The displacement causes the spring to further compress as the work piece end of the spring and the second stop move away from one another. The force of the compressed spring is transferred to the work piece.

Abstract: A Belleville spring washer (15) having an annular relief (25) depending from in its top surface (24). The relief (25) is disposed adjacent the circumferential wall (27) forming a centrally disposed opening (18) for the washer (15), the circumferential wall (27) not physically engaging the shank (37) of a fastener (39) when mounted and torqued thereon. The washer (15) includes a series of radially-extending serrations (23), each beginning adjacent the relief (25) and extending outwardly through the span (21) of the annular body (17) forming washer (15). In its mounting to a fastener (39) to be applied to a bearing surface (45), the serrations (23) face the undersurface (40) of the fastener's head (42), and the head (42) is torqued to a proper setting. The serrations (23) efficaciously bite into the head's undersurface (40), providing a tight engagement of fastener (39) to the bearing surface (45), and one which eliminates looseness in the fastener (39) upon a thermal expansion of the metal of the elements.

  • Patent number: 5628599
Abstract: In a first embodiment of this invention, a fastener having a flat thin body with sharp profusions thereon is anchored in a workpiece so that relative rotation is prevented between the anchored fastener and the workpiece. The sharp protrusions form anchoring legs which cut into the softer material of the work piece. These legs may be spike or tack shaped, and may be forced into the workpiece by pressing or hammering in a direction orthogonal to the surface of the workpiece. For sandwich applications between pairs of workpieces, the anchoring legs may be disposed on both sides of the body. In addition, individual anchoring legs may include a sharp edge which will cut into the work piece in the rotational direction. In a second embodiment, the thin surfaces of the body may be curved so that the body of the anchoring legs is deformed by the compression of a nut being tightened on a bolt. This elastic deformation provides an axial retention force in a manner similar to a lock washer.
