  • Patent number: 11867217
Abstract: A thermally stabilized fastener system and method is disclosed. The disclosed system/method integrates a fastener (FAS) incorporating a faster retention head (FRH), fastener retention body (FRB), and fastener retention tip (FRT) to couple a mechanical member stack (MMS) in a thermally stabilized fashion using a fastener retention receiver (FRR). The MMS includes a temperature compensating member (TCM), a first retention member (FRM), and an optional second retention member (SRM). The TCM is constructed using a tailored thermal expansion coefficient (TTC) that permits the TCM to compensate for the thermal expansion characteristics of the FAS, FRM, and SRM such that the force applied by the FRH and FRR portions of the FAS to the MMS is tailored to a specific temperature force profile (TFP) over changes in MMS/FAS temperature. The TCM may be selected with a TTC to achieve a uniform TFP over changes in MMS/FAS temperature.

  • Patent number: 8806829
Abstract: An anchoring device of highly resilient material of varying thicknesses, to accommodate the irregularly cut slots into which the anchors fit, is additionally embedded with one or more layers of high-strength material of solid or particulate form. The high-strength material, metal, for example, is notched to accommodate buckling, extension, and compression of planks secured by the anchor and has folds for increased strength. Multiple attachment apertures through the anchor allow use of a single anchor to secure two adjacent planks. The anchor is designed to keep planks separated from joists so that water can evaporate and not cause rot and to keep attached planks evenly spaced. The high-strength material is embedded into the anchor during the manufacturing molding process. Small openings within a layer of high-strength material provide for molten plastic of the molding process to reach all high-strength material surfaces creating a strong bond between plastic and high-strength material.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for positioning and assembly of two or more parts wherein at least one of which is of a creep sensitive material. The method and apparatus enable very precise positioning of parts during assembly by holding a rough alignment with free play permitting finer alignment. Creep resistant annular inserts are molded into the part and provided with flow apertures to conduct plastic material into the annular insert bore. A spindle defined the geometry of a centering hole within the bore during molding. The annular inserts are operable as compression limiters to prevent deformation of the creep sensitive material under the action of heat or tightening stresses.

  • Patent number: 7553554
Abstract: Galvanically protected reinforcement dowel pins and methods of producing the same. In one embodiment, the reinforcement dowel pins comprise a bar or tube, the longitudinal exposed surfaces of which are covered by a heavy gauge of a sacrificial metal, such as zinc, zinc alloy, magnesium, magnesium alloy, aluminum, or aluminum alloy. The bar or tube comprises steel, carbon steel, or other ferrous metal. The heavy gauge of sacrificial metal is applied to the ferrous metal by various processes, such as roll bonding, lock seaming, welding, die casting, flame spraying, plasma spraying, dipping, sinking, and drawing. The resulting reinforcement dowel pins resist corrosion without sacrificing structural integrity, and are reasonable in materials and manufacturing costs. These dowel pins may be installed in adjacent concrete panels using conventional methods, and therefore do not introduce additional costs in installation.

Abstract: According to an embodiment of the present invention, a fastening assembly has a first component containing a first aperture and a second component containing a second aperture. A pin made of a super-elastic alloy defines a shank with a bore having an axis, the shank being at least partially constrained within and juxtaposed with both the first and second apertures. Activation of the super-elastic alloy generates a retaining force normal to the axis of the pin, fastening the components together. Several embodiments are shown where a unitary pin fastens the components, while other embodiments are shown where the super-elastic properties of the pin are activated by another independent element of the fastener, for example a retainer that co-acts with the pin to fasten the components together. Activation forces can be applied to the pin through relative motion, or stretching against a shoulder.

The assembly comprises a first part having a first pressure transmitting surface and a second part having a second pressure transmitting surface, and adapted to rotatably receive the first pressure transmitting surface in facing relation thereto. A solid dry lubricant material in the form of an annulus is provided to reduce friction between the first and second pressure transmitting surfaces. In use, the first part rotates with the head of the fastener and the second part remains stationary relative to the surface of the fastened object so that the dry lubricant annulus acts as a bearing between the head of the fastener and the fastened object. A locking member adapted to engage a surface of both the first and second parts may be provided to prevent rotation of the first and second parts relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 5484244
Abstract: A threaded fastener with a shape memory alloy (SMA) coatings on its threads is disclosed. The fastener has special usefulness in high temperature applications where high reliability is important. The SMA coated fastener is threaded into or onto a mating threaded part at room temperature to produce a fastened object. The SMA coating is distorted during the assembly. At elevated temperatures the coating tries to recover its original shape and thereby exerts locking forces on the threads. When the fastened object is returned to room temperature the locking forces dissipate. Consequently the threaded fasteners can be readily disassembled at room temperature but remains securely fastened at high temperatures.A spray technique is disclosed as a particularly useful method of coating of threads of a fastener with a shape memory alloy.

  • Patent number: 5413443
Abstract: In a unit for mounting a primary insulator for power lines onto a pin, a threaded element has an inner diameter which decreases along the length of the threaded element from its top to bottom. The threaded element surrounds a portion of the pin, forming a gap defined by the outer peripheral surface of the pin and the inner diameter of the threaded element. An adhesive resinous material, such as epoxy, is permitted to cure within the gap and forms a strong bond with the pin, which may be metal or fiberglass. An interference fit, or interlock, is formed between the threaded element and the adhesive resinous material. The threaded element may be plastic, and a lubricating powder may be dispersed throughout the threaded element.

Abstract: A seal assembly (21) is disclosed for use with a housing (H) which defines a fluid chamber (C) and a threaded opening (O). In threaded engagement with the opening is a threaded portion (13) of a device such as a sensor assembly (11 ). The housing defines a counterbore (CB) disposed axially between the threaded opening (O) and an external surface (S). The seal assembly (21) includes a metal support member (23) including a cylindrical portion (27) having inner (33) and outer (35) portions of elastomeric sealing material. The seal assembly is pressed into the counterbore and, by means of the interference fit therebetween, may be permanently retained therein. As the member is threaded into the opening, the underside (16) of the head (15) deforms a sealing lip (39) radially inward into engagement with the threaded portion (13).

Abstract: A rivet for joining two panels together including a solid member and a member having a tubular portion surrounding part of the solid member. In one form, the rivet has a solid shank and a tail with a tubular forward portion. The shank extends entirely through an aperture in the panels to provide good shear strength. The deformable tail retains the rivet within the aperture but does not damage the edges of the aperture, which may be composite material. The tail forward tubular portion surrounds the shank and is fastened thereto mechanically or by welding. A cavity is created between the head of the tail and the rear face of the shank so that under axial compression the tubular walls of the tail buckle outward. The tail is configured to provide grip range wherein the buckling will occur against the rear wall of the workpieces being joined within a given range of workpiece thickness.
