Bolt Having Tension Feature Patents (Class 411/916)
  • Patent number: 5083889
Abstract: An apparatus including a plurality of jack bolts which are threadedly engaged with openings in a flange on a fastener to stress a shank part of the fastener. The flange can be a collar retained on a shaft by a retainer, a nut on a threaded end of a bolt, or the head portion of a bolt. The jack bolts can be arranged in a flange on an end of a tension rod to stress arbors against opposite sides of a roll sleeve to form a roll assembly for use in a rolling mill. The apparatus includes structure for preventing escape of the jack bolts from the flange which is particularly advantageous when the apparatus is secured to moving machinery where the presence of escaped jack bolts could cause damage to the machinery.

  • Patent number: 5072785
Abstract: Disclosed is a bolt assembly which includes two spacers having cooling channels defined therein which communicate with a central bore, and a bolt which extends through the bore of each spacer. The diameter of the shaft of the bolt is significantly less than either of the spacer bore diameters, allowing coolant entering the cooling channels of one spacer to circulate through the spacer bores and out the cooling channels of the other spacer, thereby cooling the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4991563
Abstract: An apparatus and method for heating hollow bolts (20) mounted in aligned openings (18) of a pair of members (10,12) to be connected together. A conduit (42) supported by a cylindrical body (40) from the end (29) of the bolt (20) is inserted within the bore (34) of the bolt (20). A fired stream of heated fluid from a gas torch (90) flows through the conduit (42) thereby to heat the bolt (20) for providing sufficient elongation for predetermined tightening or loosening of the associated nut (30). One embodiment (FIG. 1) utilizes a hollow bolt having a blind end central bore (34). Another embodiment (FIG. 3) utilizes a hollow bolt (26A) having a central bore (34A) extending through the entire length of the bolt (26A).

  • Patent number: 4917555
Abstract: The joining element comprising a fastener or screw shank having a head has adjacent to said head a portion with a plurality of parallel, concentric fit-stretch rings, whose external diameter is 0.1 to 0.5 mm larger than the external diameter of the fastening thread. A fit slot is formed between in each case two rings, with a notch groove radius which is two to three times the top radius of the fastening thread. In the transition region between the head and the aforementioned portion is provided a fillet with a rounded portion having a diameter corresponding roughly to the pitch diameter of the rings and with a radius of curvature amounting to approximately to 0.1 to 0.15 times the external diameter. The rings have a stressing cross-section in the notch groove corresponding to the stressing cross-section of the fastening thread. The top width of the rings approximately corresponds to the side width of the preliminary shape of the rings.

  • Patent number: 4854798
Abstract: The in-place tensioning washer apparatus mounts about a stud to be tensioned. The apparatus has an upper portion, a lower portion, and an expanding torus positioned therebetween. With the stud threaded into the workpiece, the washer is slid onto the stud and a nut is threaded hand tight onto the stud. Pressurization of the torus then forces the upper portion of the apparatus away from the lower portion, putting the stud in tension. Shims are inserted into the gap between the upper and lower portions caused by pressurization of the torus. The torus is then depressurized and the shims maintain the gap between the upper and lower portions, thereby maintaining the stud in tension. To relax the stress in the stud, the torus is repressurized to force the upper and lower portions of the washer apart, freeing the shims for removal. Depressurization of the torus then relaxes the stress in the stud.
