Abstract: A tensioner for tensioning foundation bolts generally used in securing large utility towers is provided. The tensioner generally comprises a hollow outer body through which the foundation bolt can extend. The inserts are effectively stamped from sheet metal, and are relatively thin and light in weight. The inserts are uniquely designed so that the inserts can be permanently locked in the stud-receiving openings of the vehicle wheel. The inserts are preferably, although not necessarily, provided with a ring flange and the peripheral edge of this ring flange engages a shoulder-forming wall in the stud-receiving opening to tightly retain the insert within the stud-receiving opening. In accordance with this construction, the inserts may be provided with a depending skirt but which does not provide any locking function for securing the inserts in the stud receiving openings. Further, it is not necessary to provide any depending skirt on the insert whatsoever.

  • Patent number: 5622465
Abstract: A lock nut to connect a joint having a threaded connector has a first nut member engagable with the threaded connector and axially displaceable, a second nut member engagable with the first nut member and turnable about an axis, a third nut member which is non-rotatably but axially displaceably connected with the first nut member and has a first substantially smooth surface over which the second nut member moves during rotation and another substantially rough surface which is embedable into a surface of the joint, and a locking element to achieve non-rotatability of the nut members. When the second nut member is turned about the axis against the smooth surface of the washer, the first nut member is displaced axially to apply a load to the threaded connector, while the rough surface of the third nut member embeds into the surface of the joint. When the lock nut is sufficiently tightened, the locking element eliminates the rotation of the second nut member.

Abstract: Vehicle wheel nut inserts adapted to extend into the stud-receiving openings of a vehicle wheel and particularly, a non-ferrous vehicle wheel and lug nut assemblies thereof. The inserts are uniquely designed so that the inserts can be permanently locked in the stud-receiving openings of the vehicle wheel. In one embodiment, the wheel inserts can be locked by means of an interference fit, and in another mode, the inserts can be locked by swaging and still further, the inserts may be locked by means of staking the inserts in the stud-receiving openings. Not only are the inserts permanently affixed within the stud-receiving openings, they will also operate to bear against the lug nuts. In this way, a spring-type loading is imposed on the lug nut preventing an unauthorized vibrational unwinding of the lug nut. The insert will deflect when tightened against the wheel opening by a lug nut to thereby provide a Belleville spring effect.

  • Patent number: 5253967
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for adapting standard threaded fasteners for use with a standard stud tensioner. An adapter has internal and external threads. The internal threads mate with the external thread of the stud to be tensioned. The external threads of the adapter engage the internal threads of a fastening nut having slots on the top thereof for engagement with a turning wrench of the tensioner. The adapter has a central threaded bore on the top portion thereof which is adapted to threadably engage the puller bar of a tensioning apparatus. The stud is elongated by actuation of the tensioner, via the puller bar, lifting the adapter as the stud is tensioned. When appropriate strain is achieved on the stud, the fastening nut is turned down to a fastened position and the stud then can be relaxed.
