  • Patent number: 8182187
Abstract: An article for use in a torque transmitting system which has a drive surface configuration having side and end surfaces is disclosed. The end surface tapers upwardly and outwardly from a lowermost point provided along a longitudinal axis to the side surface. The end surface defines a plurality of identically configured lobes that extend from a first point to a second point. The first point of one lobe is identical to the second point of an adjacent lobe. The first and second points of each lobe are provided along an imaginary circle having its center along the longitudinal axis. Each lobe extends from the first point to the second point by a series of edges that are straight, concave and/or convex. Two of the edges are tangential to the imaginary circle. The side surface extends upwardly from the edges defining the plurality of lobes.

Abstract: Interference surfaces are constructed on inner transition surfaces between wings of a fastener having a spiral recess. A portion of the transition surface is tapered to provide the interference. A standard driver for a spiral recess will engage the interference surface to create a “stick fit” engagement. The punch is formed using a wire EDM operation to construct tapered surfaces within the die cavity of a hob. The hob is machined down to obtain the desired depth, which is measured up from a gage spot indicative of the sticking point.

  • Patent number: 6997085
Abstract: A threaded fastener capable of being reduced in size and weight. A pair of side wall surfaces of each of six radially outwardly projecting, torque transmitting portions lie on straight lines passing through the center line in a cross section perpendicular to the center line so as to transmit torque through the side wall surface, whereby the direction of a surface orthogonal force N applied to a force-applied point P by a wrenching tool coincides with the direction of an effective wrenching force F. This arrangement reduces an operation force required for rotating the wrenching tool and accordingly the load acting on each of the torque transmitting portions, in comparison with a conventional hexagonal head. That is, it is possible to reduce the diameter of the head portion of the threaded fastener and the size and weight of the head portion, while avoiding deformation of the side wall surfaces through which the torque is transmitted.

  • Patent number: 6843627
Abstract: A wrenchless clamp assembly is provided to secure a tool disc, such as a circular saw blade, to a shaft of a power tool. The blade clamp assembly includes an outer flange positionable against an outer side of the blade and a manually tightenable click bolt that includes a movable click member operable to selectively engage the outer flange for rotationally locking or unlocking the bolt. In an embodiment, the click member moves alternatingly between axially engaged and disengaged positions according to sequential rotational increments of the click member relative to the bolt body. Accordingly, the click bolt can be installed by hand and rotationally locked without a need for high torque, and the click bolt can be easily removed by hand when the click member is moved to the disengaged position, axially free from the outer flange. In an embodiment, the click bolt permits limited torque applied during installation.

  • Patent number: 6802680
Abstract: A torque limiting fastener includes a fastener body and a fastener head insert configured to fit within the fastener body and to transfer a limited amount of torque to the body. The fastener body has a head with a bore formed therein and having a first set of protrusions. The fastener head insert has a tool interface for accepting a mounting tool and a perimeter edge onto which a second set of protrusions are disposed. A torque applied to the tool interface region will rotate the fastener head insert within the bore and cause the second set of protrusions to engage with the first set of protrusions to transfer torque to the fastener body. If the applied torque exceeds a limiting value, the second set of protrusions will fail to maintain engagement with the first set of protrusions and the fastener head insert will rotate without transferring the excessive torque.

  • Patent number: 5919020
Abstract: A screw, particularly a wood screw present a combination of a threaded cylindric stem (10) merging, over an inversely frustoconical part (16) with an enlarged diameter cylindric portion (20) which is integral with an underside of a large diameter washer section (23) which, in turn is integral with a shallowly convex head portion (25). The invention is intended for wood screws usually in the range of about 6 mm and provides a reduced chance of injury by providing a smooth merging with the flat surface on which the screw head is located. Also, the screw has an improved torque characteristics making it suitable for use with power screw driving tools.

  • Patent number: 5913650
Abstract: 216-type screws and KS-type screws are two types of fastening devices typically used to restrict access to the chambers of building entrance protector (BEP) enclosures used in telecommunications applications. Access to such chambers is limited to those users who have special tools designed for one or the other type of screw. The present invention is a screw that can be actuated using either the special tools designed for 216-type screws or the special tools designed for KS-type screws. In particular, screws of the present invention have a hexagon-shaped outer surface like a 216-type screw and a hexagon shaped recess with a cylindrical upstanding post in the middle of the recess like a KS-type screw.

  • Patent number: 5904008
Abstract: The invention concerns a gravestone assembly comprising a base with a gravestone detachably secured thereon by a securing arrangement. Disposed in the base is a threaded spindle which, when a gravestone is not mounted on the base is pretensioned by a spring in a position such that it projects out of the base on the gravestone side and is secured by a stop. As a result, the threaded spindle can be displaced with its upper end, which projects out of the base, against the force of the spring into the base and the foundation tube. In order to screw in the threaded spindle projecting out of the base, the gravestone has a threaded bore in its underside. The threaded spindle also projects downwards out of the base and is designed there such that it can be actuated by a turning device.

  • Patent number: 5851096
Abstract: A ratcheted nut assembly is provided to enable a nut to be tightened onto a bolt in a limited area. The ratcheted nut assembly includes an internally threaded nut that has radially extending teeth on its outer surface. The nut is held rotatably captive within an elongated housing that has a generally "Y" shaped ratchet member pivoted so that the ratchet member may have pawls that are formed on it engaged with the teeth of the nut to rotate the nut. The operator positions the ratchet member into engagement with the radially extending teeth on the nut depending upon which direction the operator desires to turn the nut. The ratchet mechanism remains with the nut after the nut is tightened.

  • Patent number: 5765980
Abstract: A cross-recessed head screw has in its head a tool engagement recess including first releasing surfaces which are adapted to be engaged with generally flat front edges of an end of a cross-headed tip screwdriver and have the function of moving the screwdriver backward when the screwdriver is turned in the reverse direction for loosening the screw. The tool engagement recess further has second releasing surfaces each contiguous to a corresponding one of the first releasing surfaces and serve to guide the backward movement of the screwdriver as the latter is turned in the screw-loosening reverse direction. By virtue of engagement between the first releasing surfaces and the front edges of the screwdriver, the reverse rotation of the screwdriver produces only a small friction torque which is quite insufficient to cause rotation of the screw in the screw-loosening direction.
