  • Patent number: 8083454
Abstract: A U-shaped connector (10) for connecting together abutting or adjoining timber elements includes a stem portion extending between two kinked spike portions (14,16) with each spike portion (14,16) extending in a common direction from the stem portion. Each kinked spike portion (14,16) is comprised of four straight portions (15,18,20,22 and 17,19,21,23) of equal length joined end-to-end, with each straight portion extending at an angle to its adjacent portion. Distal ends (24,25) of each tip portion (22,23) are sharpened and splayed wider than the stem portion. On installation, the flexibility of connector (10) is sufficient to provide a compressive force to the abutting faces of the timbers being joined with the kinked spike portions (14,16) moving outwards away from each other so as to increase the connector's pull out resistance.

  • Patent number: 6435792
Abstract: An improved sleeve for insulating a tacking strip from materials applied to furniture products. The sleeve covers and encompasses the entire tacking strip with the exception of a central corridor through which tacks from the strip extend. The sleeve slides over the tacking strip and includes a flexible flange graduated in thickness on either side of a central corridor left open by the sleeve. The sleeve is installed around the tacking strip by a lateral displacement of the sleeve over the strip causing the graduated flanges to deform slightly upon contact with each tack along the central corridor. Due to the deforming properties of the flange, resistance on each tack is small enough that insertion of the sleeve over the tacking strip not hindered yet sufficient to prevent further lateral displacement of the sleeve once it is installed around the tacking strip.

  • Patent number: 6301857
Abstract: The invention is particularly directed toward a structural member comprising an elongate metal flange having a pair of parallel side walls joined at one end by a transverse base wall to form a web receiving pocket. Each side wall has a plurality of raised teeth, each tooth having a body portion bent outwardly from the side wall along a first line transverse to the longitudinal direction of the flange, and a penetrating point portion at the free end of the body portion, bent along a second line parallel to the first line, to extend toward the socket. The invention is also directed toward a composite structural member employing the flange with a web having opposed edge portions. One edge portion of the web is mounted in the pocket of the flange and the teeth on the flange are pressed into the web to joint the web and flange together. The invention is further directed toward a method of making the composite structural member using the metal flange.

  • Patent number: 4659604
Abstract: An assembly for connecting the wooden members of a truss is disclosed, characterized by the use of a combination of adhesive and a connecting plate. The connecting plate is formed of metal and includes a plurality of nail-like projections which extend from and normal to a planar portion of the plate. A layer of adhesive is applied to the extremities of all of the projections. The wooden members to be joined are arranged in a desired configuration and the adhesive-covered projections of the plate are driven into adjoining members. In addition to the nail-like bond between the plate and the truss members, an adhesive bond is formed between the metal projections and the wood. The resulting joint has increased resistance to tensile, shear, and rotational forces.
