Abstract: This invention provides a design of an adhesive encapsulated blind rivet for joining an assembly of overlying parts having an accessible side and an inaccessible side. The rivet comprises a rivet head and tubular rivet body. A mandrel is inserted through the open end of the tubular rivet body and through a mandrel hole in the rivet head. A mandrel head engages the end of the tubular body. The tubular body is filled with a mass of latent adhesive around the mandrel. The rivet body is longer than the thickness of the parts to be joined to accommodate a substantial amount of adhesive for expulsion through holes in the rivet body located within the thickness of the assembled parts. The portion of the rivet body extending beyond the blind side of the assembled parts is weakened in a pattern of corrugations or other bands for folding of the end of the tubular body in setting the blind side of the rivet and expelling the larger quantity of adhesive against and between the riveted parts.

Abstract: A friction stir rivet is rotated and driven through a first fusible workpiece into an engaged second fusible workpiece, causing local portions of the first and second workpieces to plasticize. A slideable cap contacts the exposed surface of the first workpiece shortly after the process begins. The cap acts as a retaining element limiting plasticized material from escaping during the process. As the rivet is further driven into the members the cap slides up the rivet and actuates an angled stirring member to increase the stir radius around the body of the rivet. Once the rivet is driven into the first and second workpieces, rotation is stopped and the plasticized material cools and hardens around the rivet, creating a weld joining the workpieces and encompassing the rivet, which provides additional mechanical strength.

  • Patent number: 5895186
Abstract: A chemical anchor bolt and cap assembly installable in a hole drilled in masonry for fastening an object thereto The threaded shank of the bolt and the hollow cap extending from its end are inserted into the hole, causing an uncured bonding agent deposited in the hole, such as an epoxy, to surround the cap and the shank. When the epoxy hardens the cap is then embedded in the epoxy to create a void below the end of the shank. Cast in the epoxy surrounding the shank is a female thread that complements the shank thread. To permit the bolt to turn and cause the end of the shank to advance into the void and thereby tighten the fastening, the threaded shank has coated thereon a releasable barrier layer that acts to masks surface irregularities in the shank thread and to slightly space the shank thread from the female thread. As a consequence, the female thread cast in the epoxy is functionally free of irregularities and is loosely intermeshed with the shank thread whereby the bolt can then be easily turned.

  • Patent number: 5857817
Abstract: A centering sleeve and overflow member assembly adapted to facilitate installation of a bolt having a head and a shank extending therefrom in a hole drilled in masonry having a diameter greater than that of the shank to fasten a fixture to the masonry. The fixture has a mounting hole in alignment with the masonry hole in which is deposited a charge of a flowable uncured bonding agent. The overflow member which rests on the fixture has an opening therein in registration with the mounting hole and the sleeve which fits in the mounting hole telescopes into the upper end of the masonry hole. The sleeve is provided with centering means which when the shank is inserted through the sleeve into the masonry hole and the bolt head then lies adjacent the fixture, then acts to maintain the shank coaxial with the sleeve and with the bank of the masonry hole below the sleeve to define an inner passage between the shank and the sleeve and an annular space between the shank and the bank.

  • Patent number: 5749670
Abstract: A method for securely joining together at least first and second structural elements without disrupting the contour or continuity of the surfaces of the structure or the structural elements is disclosed. The first structural element has a first hole having a counterbored section. The counterbored section has a recessed cavity therein, which is open to the counterbored section and has an upper wall that extends generally radially outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the first hole. The second structural element has a second hole in coaxial alignment with the first hole. A fastener, such as a bolt or stud and nut combination, is inserted into the coaxially aligned holes so that the structural elements are thereby joined and the head of the bolt or nut is recessed in the counterbored section of the first hole. A suitable castable material, e.g. aluminum, is then applied to the first hole so as to fill any remaining space in the hole, including the counterbored section and the recessed cavity.

  • Patent number: 5749692
Abstract: A fastener is formed from carbon steel wire so as to have an elongate shank defining an axis, an enlarged head formed at one end of the shank, and a generally pointed tip formed at the other end of the shank. The shank has a ringed portion formed with annular grooves defining annular rings and with helical grooves intersecting the annular grooves and defining helical ribs. The fastener is heat-treated, zinc-plated, and chromate-coated. Substantially all of the shank or of the fastener, as a whole, is further coated with a polymeric material to resist corrosion, to improve ease of driving the fastener, and to increase holding power of the fastener when driven through a wood, plywood, or plasterboard workpiece and then through a steel framing member. Substantially all of the shank or of the fastener, as a whole, may be thus coated with the polymeric material. The polymeric material softens and flows upon penetration and rehardens.

Abstract: A construction anchor for mounting an object on a structure of masonry, concrete, metal or the like includes a metal anchoring portion and a plastic cap. The anchor is adapted to be inserted, metal end first, into a pre-drilled adhesive-filled hole. The cap has a flange that is larger than the hole diameter, so that the anchor may be inserted and seated in the hole at a consistent depth. When the adhesive has set, a screw or bolt is inserted through the plastic cap to engage the threads in an internal bore in the anchoring portion. The plastic cap serves not only to determine the depth of the anchor in the hole, but also to prevent adhesive and other material from entering the threaded interior of the anchor prior to use.
