Patent number: 8317446Abstract: Disclosed are embodiments of a system and method for treating a printed flexible book cover prior to book binding. In the embodiments, a liquid (e.g., water or a water-oil solvent mixture) can be applied (e.g., by a liquid applicator, such as a spray nozzle, sponge, brush, etc.) to the spine portion only of the book cover so that it pools on the surface. After a predetermined amount of time, the liquid can be removed (e.g., by a liquid remover, such as a vacuum, blower, heater, etc.). Allowing the spine portion of the book cover to soak in the liquid for this predetermined amount of time ensures that the liquid saturates the spine portion. Saturating the spine portion of the book cover alters the surface structure and, thereby enhances adhesion of an adhesive material (e.g., glue or tape) during a subsequent book binding process even in the presence of fuser oil.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2010Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Brian C. Publication number: 20120200074Abstract: A book structure and method for constructing a spine of a book, using a magnetic field created through the adhesion of magnets to hold together the book block at the spine and to allow the book spine to be separated at any page to expand the book partially or fully like an accordion. The magnets are adhered to the pages and/or to the front and back cover boards using glue or adhesive and may be covered with thin strips of material for additional strength. The resulting book spine holds together but can easily be separated for viewing spread out for exhibition.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 2, 2012Publication date: August 9, 2012Inventors: Michael Kuch, Joseph Riedel

Patent number: 8221044Abstract: A system for automatically producing a bound album consisting of individual sheets, for example, a photo album is disclosed. The system includes a unit which immediately draws in sheets output by a printer or a stacker; a unit for creasing said sheets so as to facilitate folding them and keeping said sheets in their folded form; an adhesive application unit designed to paste at least some of the sheets two by two; and a unit to flip part of the cover sheet. The sheets are received and compiled on a delivery board equipped with registration features for this purpose. The board is capable of translational movement in a direction substantially parallel to the direction in which the sheets are transported inside the system and movement between several positions in synchronism with the adhesive application unit.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2009Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: Photo Me Holding FranceInventor: Laurent Bourdelain

Publication number: 20120070250Abstract: An image forming apparatus that enables to execute a bookbinding process for sheet bundles without decreasing productivity. The image forming apparatus is connected to a bookbinding apparatus having a bookbinding unit that binds a book by attaching a ring to a punch hole and a buffer unit that performs a buffering process to convey sheets in piles so that sheets for a next sheet bundle are not ejected onto a sheet bundle that is being processed by the bookbinding unit. A determination unit determines whether a sheet is a type that is prohibited from buffering. A control unit adjusts an ejection order so that the sheet of the type that is prohibited from buffering is not ejected within the predetermined number of sheets from the first sheet of sheets that constitute the sheet bundle, when the determination unit determines that the sheet is the type that is prohibited from buffering.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2011Publication date: March 22, 2012Applicant: CANON KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Yutaka Ando, Mitsuhiko Sato, Naoto Watanabe, Takayuki Fujii, Yushi Oka, Toshiyuki Miyake, Takashi Yokoya, Hiromasa Maenishi
