    Abstract: A continuous motion position controlled in-line linear seamer allows a manufacturer or brewery such as a microbrewery to have high speed can seaming (attachment of lids to full cans of beverage) with a single compact, inexpensive, independent and repositionable seaming machine. The seaming is carried out in-line with production, and is done using a linear can path with no need for a large carousel. The motion is continuous because a variable pitch worm drive is constantly operating, driving cans at different speeds for different portions of the can path, including one portion of the path at which the can may remain motionless while being seamed.

    Abstract: A seaming assembly configured to seam a can end onto a can body to form a seamed container is disclosed. The seaming assembly includes a lifter assembly, a seaming chuck, and a knockout pad. The lifter assembly may be configured to lift a can body, and may include a spring. The seaming chuck may include a surface that is configured to contact a portion of the can end during seaming. The knockout pad may be movable relative to the seaming chuck, and may be configured to locate the can end prior to seaming. The spring may be preloaded to provide a force between 30 lbf and 90 lbf to the can body when the lifter assembly has lifted the can body and the can end has contacted the seaming chuck. The force provided to the can body may increase to between 90 lbf and 150 lbf after the spring has been compressed.

A variable tube positioning stroke length is facilitated for optimizing stroke length and for optimizing the time required to position and process tube, such as by cutting. The tube positioning apparatus comprises a slide block having a mandrel attached thereto. The slide block is actuated on a plurality of slide rails from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the mandrel is retracted and in a second position the mandrel is extended for access by processing tools, such as circular knives for cutting the tube into desired lengths. A programmable sequence timer is provided for establishing desired time intervals during which the slide block and attached mandrel are in the retracted position or the extended position.
