Patent number: 10758963Abstract: A continuous motion position controlled in-line linear seamer allows a manufacturer or brewery such as a microbrewery to have high speed can seaming (attachment of lids to full cans of beverage) with a single compact, inexpensive, independent and repositionable seaming machine. The seaming is carried out in-line with production, and is done using a linear can path with no need for a large carousel. The motion is continuous because a variable pitch worm drive is constantly operating, driving cans at different speeds for different portions of the can path, including one portion of the path at which the can may remain motionless while being seamed.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2017Date of Patent: September 1, 2020Assignee: CODI MANUFACTURING, INC.Inventors: Jared Jones, Matthew Wetterlin, Michael Hoffman

Patent number: 9085026Abstract: A seaming assembly configured to seam a can end onto a can body to form a seamed container is disclosed. The seaming assembly includes a lifter assembly, a seaming chuck, and a knockout pad. The lifter assembly may be configured to lift a can body, and may include a spring. The seaming chuck may include a surface that is configured to contact a portion of the can end during seaming. The knockout pad may be movable relative to the seaming chuck, and may be configured to locate the can end prior to seaming. The spring may be preloaded to provide a force between 30 lbf and 90 lbf to the can body when the lifter assembly has lifted the can body and the can end has contacted the seaming chuck. The force provided to the can body may increase to between 90 lbf and 150 lbf after the spring has been compressed.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2011Date of Patent: July 21, 2015Assignee: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventors: Carlos Andrés Mejia-Quinchia, Brian Fields

Patent number: 6830420Abstract: A jig is provided that includes a support portion configured to receive and vertically support a container thereon. The support portion has at least one retaining portion that is configured to non-rotationally lock with a retaining element of the container to substantially prevent relative rotation between the jig and container. Additionally, a method is provided for forming a container. The method includes forming a container body having a retaining element and providing a jig to support the container body thereon and having a retaining portion configured to non-rotationally lock with the retaining element. Additionally, the method includes positioning the container body relative to the jig so as to effect the non-rotational lock between the retaining element and retaining portion and positioning a lid on the container body. Furthermore, the method includes forming a seam between a periphery of the lid and the open end portion of the container body.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2001Date of Patent: December 14, 2004Inventor: Scott K. Patent number: 5328314Abstract: The device includes a compression stand on which a food can is placed and which is driven with vertical translation motion by a telescopic rod under the control of a cam-follower roller engaged in a cam track. During the upstroke of the rod, its two component elements are hydraulically locked together by the presence of oil in an intermediate chamber that is closed. At the top end of the stroke, the oil can escape through a passage, thereby releasing a spring which determines the force with which the can is pressed against the stationary mandrel while the lid is actually being crimped thereon.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1993Date of Patent: July 12, 1994Assignee: Hema TechnologiesInventor: Jean-Charles Marchadour

Patent number: 5214988Abstract: A tube positioning apparatus has at least one mandrel for positioning tubes for processing. A variable tube positioning stroke length is facilitated for optimizing stroke length and for optimizing the time required to position and process tube, such as by cutting. The tube positioning apparatus comprises a slide block having a mandrel attached thereto. The slide block is actuated on a plurality of slide rails from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the mandrel is retracted and in a second position the mandrel is extended for access by processing tools, such as circular knives for cutting the tube into desired lengths. A programmable sequence timer is provided for establishing desired time intervals during which the slide block and attached mandrel are in the retracted position or the extended position.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1992Date of Patent: June 1, 1993Assignee: Middlesex Paper Tube Co.Inventor: John C. Patent number: 5027580Abstract: A support pad is disclosed for supporting a can body member on a chuck mechanism during a seaming operation. The support pad includes an annular insert made of a ceramic material such as a whisker reinforced alumina material. The annular insert supports the rim of a can body member during the seaming operation. A vent passage is provided extending from a central portion of the upper surface of the support pad to a peripheral side surface for venting the space between the bottom wall of the can member and the base plate.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1990Date of Patent: July 2, 1991Assignee: Coors Brewing CompanyInventors: James E. Patent number: 4470738Abstract: This invention relates to a novel lifter construction for rolling filled cans. It is designed to allow a lifter plate to effect relative rotation with respect to a lifter body to be forcibly driven in order to introduce the merits of the free rotation system into a lifter of prior art forced driving system. To this end, there is proposed a construction wherein the lifter plate is driven by a clutch and the clutch is disengaged with lifter pressure, and a construction wherein the lifter plate may be rotated through a given angle on the plate supporting bed. Preferably, a detector is provided to detect an abnormal rolling of cans or the like.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1981Date of Patent: September 11, 1984Assignee: Toyo Seikan Kaisha, Ltd.Inventors: Yoshiro Togo, Kengi Morimoto
