Both Upper And Lower Pipe Or Rod Holding And Guiding Means Patents (Class 414/22.71)
  • Patent number: 11708723
Abstract: A method for forming a guide for a top drive unit includes connecting a lower track member to a lower mast section and connecting an upper track member to an upper mast section and telescoped with the lower track section. A slider is slidably positioned about the upper track member so the slider is movable along the upper track member. The slider has a lateral cross-sectional profile substantially the same size and shape as a lateral cross-sectional profile of the lower track member. The skate is slidably positioned about the lower track member to be movable along the lower track member and onto the slider. The skate travels along the upper track member via the slider. The skate is connectable to a top drive unit so the top drive unit is movable along the lower track member and the upper track member.

  • Patent number: 11448019
Abstract: An interlock between a drawworks and a tong includes a sensor for sensing a position of the tong. An interlock signal is generated by the sensor for sensing the position of the tong that is reflective of the position of the tong. A lock operably connected to the drawworks receives the interlock signal and disables operation of the drawworks if the interlock signal meets a predetermined criterion. A method for operating a drill rig includes operating a drawworks to raise and lower a drill string and operating a tong to add or remove segments to the drill string. The method further includes sensing a position of the tong, generating an interlock signal that reflects the position of the tong, and disabling the drawworks if the interlock signal meets a predetermined criterion.

  • Publication number: 20130330151
Abstract: The present invention provides a rapid rig-up and rig-down pipe stand building and racking system that is capable of being retrofit to an existing drilling rig. In particular, the invention relates to a horizontal to vertical pipe delivery machine that is mountable to a drilling rig. The horizontal to vertical machine delivers sections of pipe to a pair of drilling rig mounted elevators. The elevators receive and vertically translate the sections of pipe. A power tong may be used to make connections between the sections of pipe to form a pipe stand, and may also break the connections of the pipe stand. A drill floor mounted pipe racking system receives the connected drill pipe from the elevators. A pipe racking system that may be used in conjunction with the stand building system is capable of controlled, rapid, and precise movement of multiple connected sections of pipe.
