  • Patent number: 11845609
Abstract: A system and method for operating robotic pallet transportation carts and providing uniform spacing between pallets of goods, to improve the vertical alignment of the gaps between the pallets of a multilevel commercial warehouse rack. Indicators are positioned along a storage lane, such as on side walls of cart support rail structures, on the left and/or right sides with respect to the pallet transportation cart. The cart has one or more sensors (optical, magnetic and otherwise), such as on a side of the cart to detect the indicators on the side of the lane. The cart is programmed to count the indicators and lower the pallet of goods after sensing a selected indicator number. By spacing the indicators an appropriate distance apart, the pallets can be arranged to have vertically aligned gaps, even if there are minor variations in the length of pallets of goods.

Abstract: Embodiments are described for proximity auditing of removable media cartridge magazines in a data storage library. For example, a proximity sensor mounted on a robotic assembly can be used to detect one or more target features of cartridge magazines. In particular, the proximity sensor can look for relatively large structural features of a removable cartridge magazine in a manner that is fast and reliable, and does not rely on precise positioning of the robotic assembly with respect to the magazine. Some implementations can use the proximity sensor in conjunction with further auditing and/or other functions of line camera, and/or other sensors of the robotic assembly. Proximity-based auditing of the magazines can permit storage library systems to initialize faster and with more reliable inventory information.

Abstract: A safety system for online servicing of a media library is provided, wherein the library comprises a plurality of media storage cells and at least one media picker robot that moves along the media storage cells, and wherein the library is contained within an enclosure having at least one access means. The safety system comprises a sensor that detects if the access means in the enclosure is open and a control component that operates the robot in the media library in one of two modes. If the access means is closed, the robot operates in a normal mode, wherein the robot moves at a first specified speed. If the access means is open, the robot operates in a safe mode, wherein the robot moves at a second specified speed that is slower than the first speed of the normal mode. In another embodiment, while in safe mode, the picker robot is excluded from moving within a restricted zone in the library.

  • Patent number: 6512963
Abstract: In a mass storage library, a module storage array includes a back plate having apertures patterned to form a cartridge storage together with cell blocks that mate with the openings in the back plate. A column of cell blocks are held in place between a shelf and a spring load and include calibration targets to align the cell blocks to the library accessor and reader. One stripe the length of the storage cell stack contains a bar-code. The bar-code extends the entire length of the stripe and identifies the individual cell blocks when empty. A plurality of columns of cell blocks provide the complete storage array. Each column of the cell blocks include one stripe with a bar-code along its length that is directly fastened to the back plate with each cell of the column having a separate bar-coding on the strip. The accessor includes a sensor that reads the coding to provide an indication of an empty cell block.

  • Patent number: 6213705
Abstract: A tape storage library apparatus includes a gripper for handling tape cartridges and an integrated camera, proximity sensor, and reach safe sensor operable with a common light source for performing multiple tape cartridge sensing functions. The camera reads the labels of tape cartridges stored in slots of a storage library. The proximity sensor senses the presence and absence of tape cartridges in the slots. The proximity sensor also distinguishes between labeled and unlabeled tape cartridges stored in the slots. The reach safe sensor senses the presence of obstructions in the path of movement of the gripper. The proximity sensor further calibrates the position of the gripper in the storage library. A processor operable with the reach safe sensor calibrates the optical source to ensure proper tape cartridge sensing functions.

  • Patent number: 6146077
Abstract: A wafer transfer system of semiconductor fabricating equipment is capable of successively arranging a plurality of wafers in a designated order (e.g., an ascending order, a descending order, an odd/even number order or an individual selection order). The wafer transfer system includes a first cassette containing the wafers, and a second cassette for receiving the wafers. A wafer transfer robot having a wafer transfer arm moves the wafers from the first cassette to the second cassette, after the wafer serial numbers have been read and sent to a computer. The computer uses a selected wafer arrangement order to decide where within the second cassette each wafer from the first cassette should be placed and then controls the wafer transfer robot to place each wafer into the desired location. With the wafers arranged in the selected order, it is not necessary to test each wafer after each fabricating process.

  • Patent number: 5898593
Abstract: Disclosed is an automated data storage library for storage and retrieval and selective export and import of portable data storage media stored in storage cells of portable magazines. Each portable magazine has a detent, and has registration surfaces, such as a sleeve at each of two corners. A columnar elevator supports a columnar stack of the portable magazines, and has an opening at its top level external to the library, and pushes the stack toward the top level. Fixed registration shafts in the library mate with the magazine sleeves to prevent lateral movement while allowing columnar movement of the magazines. The media may be accessed by a picker at the storage cells of the magazines at all levels in the stack internal to the library. A releasable latch engages the detent of the magazine at the penultimate level of the stack (e.g., the top position within the library), holding the stack against the upward pushing of the elevator, and external latches each engage a magazine in the stack at the top level.

  • Patent number: 5814171
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for auditing cartridges and empty cells in a storage library system including a plurality of cells for storing cartridges and further including a robotically actuated hand assembly. A line-scan camera is secured to the hand assembly, and a visible pattern is positioned within each cell such that the visible pattern is readable by the line-scan camera when the line-scan camera is moved to a position adjacent the particular cell if the cell is empty. The visible pattern is positioned such that the presence of a cartridge within the particular cell would prevent viewing of the visible pattern within the cell by the line-scan camera. The line-scan camera is operated in a manner to search for the visible pattern within each cell for auditing numbers of cartridges and empty cells in the storage library system.
