Abstract: Slidably mounted within the cylinder 108 of the accumulator 46 is a piston 48. A spring 50 is positioned behind the piston 48, which biases the piston 48 toward port 56. The portion of the cylinder 108 occupied by spring 50 is vented to the atmosphere by breather 52, which allows air to pass in and out of cylinder 108. As a result of the spring 50 acting on the piston 48, fluid is collected, stored, and released from the cylinder 108 under pressure. It should be understood that the accumulator could collect, store and release fluid under pressure using energy storage devices other than spring 50. For example, the accumulator 46 could be gas.

Abstract: The present invention is a refuse truck lift arm with sections that are bolted, not welded, together. Where the sections are joined together there is a recess and key arrangement. The key is seated in the recess of each half and straddles the inner face that divides them. In this way, shear forces that would otherwise be entirely borne by the bolts are also placed on the key. Each of the three sections, called “weldments,” are welded together in a novel way. The welding placement and sequence reduces welding distortion. Two C-shaped steel pieces are used for each straight section of each weldment. First, interior reinforcing brackets are welded into each C-section. Next, the two C-shaped sections are welded together, with the weld being between the edges that will form the thin side of the arm.

Abstract: A compact lifter is disclosed which allows for an improved operating envelope of the liftplate. The lifter utilizes a motor having 210 degrees of rotation and lifting arms of a unique geometry to rotate a liftplate from a retracted position below and in front of the lifter baseplate to a dumping position wherein the opening of a refuse cart is located substantially forward of an inner hopper or container edge. As a result, refuse is dumped further into the container or vehicle hopper, which minimizes the number of packing cycles required as multiple refuse carts are emptied. The liftplate is attached to the motor using dual lifting arms, and includes a fixed upper hook. A rotating, retractable lower hooking mechanism holds the refuse cart during dumping. The compact design improves ground clearance when the lifter is retracted, permits the dumping of large commercial containers over the lifter, and requires no modification of the hopper structure of a rear-loading refuse collection vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7018155
Abstract: A lift apparatus for conveying, lifting and at least partially inverting a refuse container for emptying into a dumpster or a refuse receptacle. The apparatus preferably has a base with wheels and a handle to facilitate transport. In one embodiment, the handle telescopes vertically and is hook shaped and adapted for engaging the lip of a dumpster or garbage chute. A pair of offset pivot arms is pivotally mounted to the frame and to a bin carriage, into which a refuse receptacle may be received. Application of a pivoting force to the pivot arms lifts and at least partially inverts the bin carriage for emptying the refuse container. Preferably a damper is provided on bin carriage movement as well as a locking mechanism to prevent bin carriage movement while being conveyed. The device may be operated manually, or adapted with mechanical power output devices to simplify lifting.

  • Patent number: 6821074
Abstract: An automated container loader for mounting to the side of a vehicle adapted for collecting the contents of curbside residential waste containers. The vehicle has a vehicle body longitudinally attached to the vehicle chassis. The automated container loader is attached to the vehicle chassis by a slide and positioned adjacent the side of the vehicle body. The container loader is equipped with a lift arm having a gripping element having a gripper housing having an opposing pair of gripping jaws. The gripping jaws are pivotally attached to the gripper housing on opposite sides to their respective arms, thereby creating a cross-pivoting arrangement. The distance between the free ends of the gripping jaws is thereby reduced when in the open position. The cross-pivoting arrangement further allows the container loader to have a thin overall width, accomplished through use of a non-folding single-section gripping jaw.

  • Publication number: 20040184902
Abstract: A lifter is disclosed which allows for an improved operating envelope of the faceplate. The lifter utilizes a motor having 210 degrees of rotation and lifting arms of a unique geometry to rotate a faceplate from a retracted position below and substantially behind the lifter baseplate to a dumping position above and substantially behind a lower hopper edge for the purpose of dumping refuse carts into a refuse collection vehicle. This dumps refuse further into the vehicle hopper, which minimizes the number of packing cycles required on a collection route. A faceplate is attached to the motor using two lifting arms. The faceplate has a fixed upper hook and a sliding, retractable lower hooking mechanism. This sliding hook feature makes the lifter more compact when retracted and improves ground clearance when the lifter is mounted on the rear of a rear-loading refuse collection vehicle. Longer lifting arms may be substituted to allow for use of the lifter with a side-loading refuse collection vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6702135
Abstract: The invention is a universal dumpster adapted for use with both conventional front loading and roll-off refuse collection trucks. A universal dumpster according to this invention includes a floor, a pair of side walls, and a pair of end walls. The floor, side walls and end walls together define an interior compartment for collecting and containing solid waste. Sleeves rotatably mounted to the side walls engage the lifting arms of a front loading truck. At least one of the end walls includes a door that is movable between a first fully closed position and a second fully opened position for depositing solid waste into the dumpster and discharging the solid waste from the dumpster. The rotatable sleeves reduce the forces exerted on the lifting arms of the front loading truck. Accordingly, the capacity of the dumpster may be increased.
