Abstract: An upper conveyor (4) moves full compartments (9) toward an emptying station (2) so that rods contained in the compartments enter a horizontal conduit (15). Empty compartments are taken over by a lift (7). Another conveyor (5) feeds empty compartments to the entrance of a filling station (3) into which the rods flow from the conduit. The full compartments are recovered on the lift or on still another conveyor (6) which can route them via the lift or via another lift (8) toward a storage position on one of the conveyors.

  • Patent number: 4986718
Abstract: Method and apparatus for supplying rod-like articles, such as cigarettes, cigars, filter plugs, and tampons. A group of such articles is moved from a receiving location to a discharging location in a predetermined configuration within a storage container. At the discharging location, the container is inverted so that its open side faces downwardly to thereby discharge the articles therefrom. Concurrently with the discharge, the container is lifted from the support surface and containing plates are raised to engage the articles. The distance between the plates is substantially the same as the distance between a respective pair of inner side walls of the container so that the articles are substantially maintained in the predetermined configuration upon the retraction of the container. In one embodiment, the plates are movable vertically and advance the articles a predetermined amount along the supply passage until they abut a shutter mechanism which blocks further advancement.

Abstract: A nuclear fuel pellet unloading apparatus includes a transfer housing pivotally movable between an upright position remote from a pellet deposit site and an inverted position adjacent to the deposit site, and convertable between opened and closed conditions. In its upright position and closed condition, the housing receives a sintering boat loaded with nuclear fuel pellets and holds the boat while retaining the pellets within the boat as the boat is moved from upright to inverted orientations upon pivoting of the housing from its upright to inverted position. An actuator is operated for causing pivoting of the housing from its upright to inverted position and back to its upright position. A latch member latches the housing in its closed condition when the housing is disposed in its upright position and as the housing is pivoted from its upright position toward its inverted position.

  • Patent number: 4917561
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a feeder cassette for feeding electronic components into a component processing unit. The cassette includes an assembly body having a plurality of slots formed on opposing interior sides thereof to form channels within the assembly body. The channels are designed to receive a plurality of components therein, preferably in pre-packed flat tubes. A leaf spring having a button projecting from the distal end of each of the fingers of the leaf spring permits only the components from a desired "activated" channel to be released. The cassette is indexed forwardly until all of the components have been released from each of the channels sequentially. The buttons of the spring fingers also serve to hold the components within the cassette if the cassette is withdrawn from the feeder unit at any time prior to fully emptying the tubes.

  • Patent number: 4856958
Abstract: Apparatus for converting discrete block-shaped arrays of parallel cigarettes into a continuous mass flow of cigarettes has an elevator which receives discrete arrays from individual trays while in a raised position and which thereupon deposits a freshly received array on the mobile bottom wall in the compartment of a magazine having upright front and rear walls which are movable independently of each other. The compartment receives one array at a time. A conveyor adjacent the front wall of the magazine carries the trailing end of the mass flow, and the array in the compartment can be added to the trailing end of the mass flow in response to movement of the front wall transversely of the direction of transport of the mass flow. At such time, the bottom wall and the rear wall of the magazine are moved forwardly to expel the array from the magazine. The front wall is then returned to its normal position and the rear wall is retracted to provide room for delivery of a fresh array into the magazine.

Abstract: A frame (22) is pivotably mounted to a fixed support (14) below the frame (22). The frame (22) has a horizontal base (24) and a vertical restraining wall (28). A roller table (36) is mounted on and parallel to the base (24). A baggage container (2) is positioned on the table (36) with a side opening (4) adjacent to and covered by the restraining wall (28). The frame (22), table (36), and container (2) are pivoted into an inclined position in which the opening (4) faces generally downwardly. Two scissor links (42) disposed between the base (24) and the table (36) are operated to raise the table (36) and container (2) relative to the frame (22). This progressively uncovers the opening (4) to allow pieces of luggage (8) to move out of the container (2) and onto a chute (94).

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for more efficiently backfilling a ditch in the ground. The apparatus is comprised of a rigid compartment adapted to be pendantly supported by the dumping scoop of a front end loader vehicle. The compartment has an inclined floor and a closeable aperture located at the lowermost extremity of the floor. Backfill material dumped from the scoop falls into the compartment and is diverted horizontally a sufficient extent to enter the ditch. By virtue of the apparatus and its manner of association with the dumping scoop, the front end loader can fill the ditch merely by riding a continuous path parallel to the ditch.

  • Patent number: 4770591
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for discharging serial arrays of solid components contained in a three dimensional matrix of feeding positions, into a delivery track, one serial array at a time. The matrix of feeding positions is comprised of trays each having a row of component containing channels. The trays are stacked one on top of another, and loaded in a box-like container. The container is lowered, presenting one tray at a time to a plurality of funnel-shaped discharge openings. A shuttle, capable of selectively blocking the discharge openings, is aligned with one opening at a time, and is operative to receive a serial array of components contained in a channel aligned with that opening. Upon receiving the components, the shuttle returns to a home position in alignment with the delivery track, whereupon it discharges the components into the track. The shuttle is indexed along a row of channels, one channel at a time, until the tray is emptied.

Abstract: A dumpster-type trash container is disclosed in which the bottom wall and the lower portion of the side walls are formed of a heavier gauge material to eliminate premature corrosion failures. In the illustrated embodiment, the lower portions of the side walls that are formed of a heavier material are inclined up from the bottom wall to a junction with the side walls above the level of liquid normally contained within the dumpster. The vertical corners are also inclined to reduce the tendency for trash to stick within the container when it is inverted for dumping. Further, the fork receiving sleeves are flared at their forward ends to provide reinforced camming surfaces to guide the forks into the sleeves and to protect the dumpster from damaging impact with the forks. The covers are provided with a latching system to retain the covers in a fully opened position to prevent accidental closure and damage to users.
