Patent number: 6382644Abstract: An apparatus particularly designed to receive, support, transport and/or position tire and wheel assemblies of vehicles, particularly large vehicles, is described. One embodiment of the apparatus comprised a lower frame, an upright support coupled to the lower frame, a vertical positioning device, and a tire and wheel assembly support operably coupled to the vertical positioning device. Working embodiments included a lower U-shaped frame, generally having plural casters attached thereto, for easy positioning about tires attached to vehicles. A method for receiving, supporting, transporting and positioning tire and wheel assemblies also is described. The method comprises first providing a suitable apparatus. The apparatus is positioned adjacent a tire and wheel assembly of a vehicle. The vertical position of the tire and wheel support assembly is adjusted to engage the tire and wheel assembly. The tire and wheel assembly is then placed on the apparatus, which supports the tire and wheel assembly.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1999Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Safe Tools Shop, Inc.Inventor: Clifford Craig Rawlings

Patent number: 6357989Abstract: A device and method for lifting an aircraft wheel assembly. The device comprises first and second wheel-engaging supports connectable to a bearing structure and rotatable relative to one another between open and wheel-cradling configurations, the device further comprising an actuator connected to the bearing structure to enable raising or lowering of the supports relative to the ground when in the wheel-cradling configuration.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1999Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Inventor: Frank Iles

Patent number: 6283696Abstract: An aircraft towing vehicle includes a lifting and locking device for the nose landing gear of the aircraft being towed. The device has two support elements which reach behind the nose wheels and can be displaced along straight-line guiding rails by a linear drive so as to pull the nose wheels of the aircraft onto a lifting platform and to lock it into place thereon. At the end of each guiding rail a guiding pin is provided which, in cooperation with a guiding track embodied in the support element, controls the rotation of the support element into a release position in which the nose landing gear is able to pass through. By a reverse movement, the rotation of the support elements are put into the operation position in which the support elements reach behind the nose landing gear.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2000Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: FMC International AGInventors: Gregor Trummer, Hartmut Mann, Thomas Fuchs

Patent number: 6186727Abstract: The present invention discloses a transporting assembly for maneuvering a motorcycle around a garage or onto the back bed of a tow truck. The transporting assembly includes a rear chock associated with the back side of the front wheel, a front chock associated with the front side of the front wheel, and a dolly coupled to both front and rear chocks. The dolly has an actuator which causes the dolly to extend two of its arms to raise the transporting assembly off the floor, so that when the front wheel of the cycle is strapped onto the transporting assembly, as the dolly is actuated, the transporting assembly, along with the front wheel of the cycle, raises off of the floor. The free ends of the arms are coupled to a wheel so that the entire transporting assembly and the cycle may be maneuvered about the floor by a single operator.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1999Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Inventor: Steven P. Patent number: 6179542Abstract: A kneeling dolly with ramp brake and method of use. Each kneeling dolly with ramp brake comprises a body having a ramp adjacent a wheel well, two front wheels swivellably and retractably attached to the body, and at least one rear wheel. Devices for extending and retracting the front wheels are provided. The instant kneeling dolly with ramp brake may be used singly, in pairs, or in whatever grouping(s) desired. In operation, a vehicle is rolled onto kneeling dollies with ramp brake, until one vehicle wheel is disposed on a respective kneeling dolly with ramp brake. Due to the swivellable attachment of the front and rear wheels, each kneeling dolly with ramp brake is free to travel in any desired direction, and thus the vehicle supported by the kneeling dollies with ramp brake may be pushed in any direction. This flexibility in movement helps relieve congestion and maximize floor space in garages, hangars, etc.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1999Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Inventor: Edward S. Haven

Patent number: 6139250Abstract: Wheel lift tow device for a tow truck includes a centrally located extendable support beam having a cross bar pivotably attached to it, so that it can be oriented obliquely for towing obliquely placed disabled cars. The telescoping slider arms of the cross bar provide lateral movement for a pair of swivel arm claws, or claws, which cradle and lift a pair of wheels of the disabled vehicle. The swivel arm scoops are rotatable about a pivot on each telescoping slider arm, but in their position of use are supported by a lateral stop bracket, which supports the lateral forces of the wheel while in the cradled position and distributes the weight therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1998Date of Patent: October 31, 2000Assignee: Weldbuilt Body Co.
