Patent number: 4609322Abstract: Earthmoving vehicles are often provided with a linkage arrangement on one end that is utilized to manipulate a work implement, such as a loader bucket. The linkage typically includes a tilting arrangment for the bucket that incorporates a tilt lever that is mounted to a lift arm that supports the bucket. The mounting between the tilt lever and the lift arm is normally of a complex nature requiring multiple bearing surfaces and lubrication means. Others may have a structure that requires exact positioning between the relative components or a failure will occur due to improper loading. The linkage arrangement of the present invention provides a mounting member that is attached to only one of the tilt levers. It also includes an axial motion limiter that is attached to the other tilt lever. In doing so, a very simple and economical mounting device is provided. The mounting device also allows the tilt levers to rotate with respect to each other so that each of the levers function to bear a portion of the loading.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1984Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Wilton E. A shipper shaft is journaled in the boom and extends through trunnions therein. The yoke is pivotally mounted, coaxially with the shipper shaft directly on the trunnions which are an integral part of the boom so that loads experienced by the yoke are transmitted directly to the boom and not to the shipper shaft. A removable bearing housing arrangement supports the yoke on the trunnions.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1980Date of Patent: July 13, 1982Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: Robert B. Patent number: 4285629Abstract: An extendable utility boom assembly for assisting fire-fighting operations performed from a semi-submersible service vessel upon an offshore platform is disclosed. The boom assembly is moved to operating position by means of a carriage assembly which is mounted for movement along a track secured to the deck of the service vessel. Orientation of the boom assembly in azimuth and pitch is provided by a supporting frame which is pivotally mounted on the carriage assembly for angular movement through a horizontal plane, and a boom housing which is pivotally mounted on the supporting frame for angular movement through a vertical plane. An elongated utility boom is supported by roller bearing elements for axial movement through the boom housing. A first linear actuator is interconnected between the carriage assembly and supporting frame for displacing the supporting frame through the horizontal plane.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1978Date of Patent: August 25, 1981Inventor: Thomas L. Elliston

Patent number: 4260322Abstract: A boom arm of a boom assembly is formed of a pair of side walls integrated into a box boom structure where the top and bottom plates are roll formed with transition edges providing a weld bed for welds attaching the side walls to the top and bottom plates. The particular cross sections of the top and bottom plates provide a weld blow-through preventing barrier and also dimensional guidance and tolerance control during assembly of the boom arm.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1978Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: International Harvester CompanyInventor: Thomas M. Patent number: 4193734Abstract: A lifting machine boom having two side walls maintained in spaced relationship to each other by a bottom wall and a top wall and a median reinforcing member dividing the interior of the boom into the first and second longitudinally extending chambers. One or more rigid pipes are attached to the median wall and run longitudinally of the boom from locations adjacent the ends. These pipes conduct pressurized fluid to and from one or more actuators carried by or associated with the boom. One said actuator is disposed in the second chamber.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1978Date of Patent: March 18, 1980Assignee: Massey-Ferguson Services N.V.Inventor: Derrick G. Williams

Patent number: 4185945Abstract: A shovel linkage for a hydraulic excavator includes boom rails having pivot means in one end for pivotal connection to an excavator and cross tubes extending between the rails near the pivot means and having pivot joints provided thereon for connection of actuating cylinders for the linkage in line with the cross tube and close to the pivot means whereby forces imparted to the linkage by the actuating cylinders will be directly through the center of the cross tube and very near the boom rail pivot means, minimizing bending moments in the linkage. The pivot joint includes a flat tab member provided on the cross tube and projecting outwardly along a diameter thereof, and a pin and ball connecting the bifurcated end of a hydraulic cylinder to the tab for limited rotation thereof. The pin is disposed substantially normal to the plane of the boom rails for unimpeded insertion and removal thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1977Date of Patent: January 29, 1980Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Stephen H. Patent number: 4162872Abstract: A low-profile front end loader vehicle has the bucket located as close to the front wheels as is possible without sacrificing strength and maneuverability. The lift arms are shortened and reshaped in the midportion to lower the low position of the lift arms. An irregularly shaped reinforced tubular crossbrace is provided and has end plates which coact not only with external plates on each arm for attachment of the lift cylinders to said arms, but also coact with brackets carried by said crossbrace to support the tilt arms thereon. The respective plates strengthen the lift arms and the reinforced crossbrace has internal stiffness that resists torsion and bending to provide an improved compact lift structure.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1977Date of Patent: July 31, 1979Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventors: Frank A. Patent number: 4155470Abstract: A boom assembly for a loader that is pivotally mounted on a tractor. The assembly includes a pair of boom arms which are pivotally connected at one end of the tractor. The arms are fabricated from two C-channels which are welded together. The arms have aligned inside apertures sized to accept a tube which is rigidly connected to both channels. The assembly is completed when a cross tie member envelopes the tubes and is rigidly secured to the inner C-channels.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1978Date of Patent: May 22, 1979Assignee: International Harvester CompanyInventors: R. Patent number: 4143783Abstract: A reverse linkage loader bucket arm with an enclosed cylinder assembly and wherein a loader bucket is pivotally mounted on the arm and the cylinder assembly induces the pivotal action. The lift or support arm for the bucket is hollow along its longitudinal axis and the cylinder assembly is mounted within the hollow arm and projects through an open end thereof to pivotally connect with the bucket and the point of pivotal connection is to the side of the pivotal connection of the arm in the bucket away from the bucket. The cylinder fluid lines are also disposed within the hollow boom or lift arm, and thus the cylinder assembly and the lines or hoses are enclosed and thereby protected and arranged for reverse linkage connection relative to the arm and the bucket.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1977Date of Patent: March 13, 1979Assignee: J.
