Patent number: 4657473Abstract: Apparatus for pivoting a robot or manipulator operating head about a yaw axis wherein the head is mounted on a wrist mechanism with a roll axis. The operating head is mounted on a head support member connected by a yaw pin to the forward end of the wrist mechanism for pivotal movement between a normal, forwardly extending position and a yawed position. A fluid cylinder with a forwardly extending piston rod is mounted on the wrist mechanism and is operatively connected by flexible means to the head support member. The flexible means includes a bell crank with one arm operatively connected to the piston rod, and a link connected between the other end of the bell crank and the head support member. When the piston rod extends and retracts, the operating head is pivoted about the yaw axis. The linkage isolates the fluid cylinder from the gravity forces resulting from the moment produced about the yaw axis by roll motion of the operating head about the roll axis when the head is in the normal position.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1985Date of Patent: April 14, 1987Assignee: Rimrock CorporationInventor: Peter Banovic

The free end of one of the linkages is connected to a first fixed point and the free end of the other linkage connects to a crank arm on the grapple tooth frame. The free end of the hydraulic member connects to a second fixed point in the linkage housing. The linkage housing connects to the grapple tooth frame via the pivot tube. When the grapple teeth are in an upward or open position, the linkage connecting directly to the crank arm is approaching an in-line configuration with the hydraulic member. In a closed or load engaging position of the teeth, the two linkages are approaching an in-line configuration.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1979Date of Patent: August 25, 1981Assignee: Du-Al Manufacturing Company, Division of Core Industries, Inc.Inventor: Edward M. Patent number: 4275986Abstract: A programmable automatic assembly system is provided which may be employed to assemble small parts. Each assembly station includes cooperating manipulator arms which are programmable to assemble parts on a centrally located work table. Improved facilities are provided for teaching the manipulator arms at each station, these facilities including a computer which assists the teaching operator in setting up the programs required for assembly of small parts to close tolerances. Each manipulator arm includes closed loop teach facilities for maintaining the arm at a previously located position during the teaching mode of operation. The computer is employed as a teach assist facility in performing a number of tasks during the teaching operation which are extremely difficult for the operator to perform manually. All of the assembly stations may be controlled during playback from a common disc storage facility so that the control circuitry and memory storage facilities at each manipulator are minimized.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1979Date of Patent: June 30, 1981Assignee: Unimation, Inc.Inventors: Joseph F. Patent number: 4260323Abstract: PCT No. PCT/US79/00584 Sec. 371 Date Aug. 9, 1979 Sec. 102(e) Date Aug. 9, 1979 PCT Filed PCT Pub No. WO 81/00396 Pub Date Feb. 19, 1981A compact grapple head (10) for use in apparatus such as a logging vehicle (11). The grapple head has a reduced overall height and utilizes four pivot connections (17,26,27 and 31) in controlling the tongs (13 and 18) thereof. The arrangement of the pivot connections relative to the tongs, an extensible device (22) and an interconnecting (28) provides an improved load-handling capability both as to maximum and minimum loads. Each of the extensible device (22) and link (28) is connected between the tongs with one of the pivotal connections (26) connecting both of the extensible device (22) and link (28) to one of the tongs (13) and a second pivotal connection (27) connecting both the extensible device and the other of the tongs (18) to the frame (12).Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1979Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: John R. Patent number: 4257731Abstract: A power-operated implement mechanism mounted on the tip of a boom. The mechanism includes a torque tube which is rotated under power to rotate an implement mounting. A fluid-operated ram which is actuated to cause opening and closing of work implements in the mechanism has its rod extending downwardly through the torque tube then to be connected through linkage to the work implements. The work implements are pivotally mounted on the implement mounting. The implement mounting is rotated about the axis of the torque tube through power-operated means operatively connected to the torque tube.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1978Date of Patent: March 24, 1981Assignee: North Bend Fabrication & Machine, Inc.Inventor: Robert Beaver

Patent number: 4248471Abstract: An arcuate-shaped upper jaw is pivotally attached near its inner end to the outer end of the stick member extending from the boom assembly of a backhoe, and an arcuate-shaped lower jaw is pivotally connected to the inner end of the upper jaw, the lower jaw further being pivotally connected by means of a rod or a hydraulic cylinder to the underside of the stick member. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder disposed on the stick member causes movement of the upper jaw, which thereby effects movement of the lower jaw, such that the jaws can be moved together for clamping or apart for a raking operation by the lower jaw.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1979Date of Patent: February 3, 1981Inventor: Roy E. Patent number: 4231701Abstract: A manipulator comprises a carriage on which is mounted a peel having jaws for gripping a workpiece. The peel can move relative to the carriage longitudinally vertically and in tilt. Detectors give signals representing parameters on which the position of the peel depend and a circuit derives from those signals an indication of the position of the jaws, taking into account the angular attitude of the peel. The position indication can be used to control the peel jaws to a required position relative to the carriage.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1978Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Assignee: Davy-Loewy Ltd.Inventors: Anthony E. Patent number: 4217076Abstract: A load-lifting mechanism at the front of a lift truck carries an upright boom with a pair of parallel spaced-apart forwardly cantilevered boom portions rotatably supporting a horizontal pivot tube between their forward ends. A vertical pivot shaft rotatably carried by the pivot tube suspends a grapple beneath the cantilevered boom portions. The grapple includes a yoke mounting and a pair of grapple arms opened and closed by single or dual hydraulic cylinders. A mechanical link interconnects the grapple arms so that they open and close together and to the same extent. A pair of fluid cylinders on the cantilever boom portions pivot the pivot tube to swing the shaft and grapple fore and aft. A rotation mechanism between the cantilever boom portions and their cylinders rotates the pivot shaft and connected grapple about the axis of the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1978Date of Patent: August 12, 1980Assignee: Raygo Wagner, Inc.Inventors: James J.
