Including Working Fluid Force Responsive Vane Or Flow Control Patents (Class 415/146)
  • Patent number: 3975911
Abstract: A turbocharger comprising a compressor casing with a compressor impeller accommodated therein; a turbine casing with a turbine wheel accommodated therein and mounted on a shaft which also mounts said compressor impeller; and an intermediate casing which couples the compressor casing to the turbine casing. Provided in the turbine casing are two adjacent passages each of which serves the purpose of carrying exhaust gases to one half of the turbine wheel. The passages are isolated from each other at the inlet to the turbine wheel by means of two partitions. A disk to protect the intermediate casing against the effects of exhaust gas heat is mounted coaxially with the shaft between the intermediate casing and the turbine casing. The disk is held against the partitions by springs located in the intermediate casing and is adapted to be moved axially along the shaft by the agency of the difference between the pressures exerted by the exhaust gases and the springs.

  • Patent number: 3972643
Abstract: A centrifugal pump with its impeller arranged beside the main media current in the pump housing (Vortex impeller pump) is provided with an inner part of resilient material which part forms the inlet of the pump. When a certain maximum volume goes into the pumphousing, the inlet edges fold inwards thus diminishing the inlet area and preventing the volume current from increasing over a certain value.

  • Patent number: 3960464
Abstract: This invention relates to a ventilating fan of the kind comprising a housing defining an air passage, and an impeller rotatable from an electric motor or other prime mover within the housing. The invention is concerned with the provision of an improved automatic shutter device which consists of shutter plates which may have their pivot axes tangential to a common circle and movable between a position which closes the air passage and a position which opens said air passage. The shutter device is operated by means responsive to rotation of the impeller shaft for moving the shutter means to the open position when the impeller is rotating and to the closed position when the impeller is not rotating. The shutter operating means may be such that substantially no thrust or load is placed upon the prime mover when it is rotating at a selected operating speed.

  • Patent number: 3957392
Abstract: The outlet of a centrifugal compressor is provided with an annular row of movable diffuser vanes which align with the fluid flow direction to prevent a surge condition. Each movable diffuser vane has a pivot axis forward of the vane's center of pressure to cause the fluid from the impeller to move the vane such that the flow meets the diffuser vane leading edge with a near-zero incident angle. The vanes are floating or freely movable on the pivot axis except for spring bias which prevents flutter. In some embodiments, the movable vanes are upstream of primary fixed diffuser vanes, of the vane-island or of the airfoil vane type, and are movable between a closed position abutting the primary vanes to variable open positions which create auxiliary diffuser channels.
