  • Patent number: 8356972
Abstract: A thermally actuated shutdown seal for a rotating shaft having a narrow annular fluid flow path surrounding the shaft. The seal surrounds the shaft with the annulus therebetween during normal operation and constricts against the shaft when the shaft slows or stops rotating. The annulus is maintained open during normal operation by a spacer interposed between opposing ends of a split ring. When the shaft stops rotating, the temperature of the annulus rises, which actuates removal of the spacer from the split ring constricting the split ring against the shaft blocking the annulus. The blocked annulus causes a pressure differential across the seal which urges a polymer seal ring, downstream of the split ring against the shaft which seals the annulus. In one embodiment, the spacer is formed of a meltable material. In a second embodiment, the spacer is removed from the split ring by a thermally responsive actuator.

  • Publication number: 20120251293
Abstract: A bearing and seal assembly for supporting and sealing a terminating outboard end of an impeller shaft in a centrifugal pump such as a between-bearings pump includes only one seal but provides advantages typical of a dual-seal assembly, including barrier fluid protection against seal damage caused by abrasive slurries, and protection against leaking of toxic process fluid to atmosphere. A bearing housing sealed to the pump's pressure casing encloses the seal, bearing, and terminating impeller shaft end. Leakage of process fluid past the seal is prevented by a lubricating, pressurized, cooled barrier fluid which is circulated through the bearing housing by an external pump and/or by an internal, shaft-driven impeller. Because the impeller shaft terminates within the bearing housing and does not penetrate to atmosphere, the barrier fluid is contained within the bearing housing and a second seal is not required.

Blow-down forces are greater on the lower pressure side 16 of the leaf seal 10 than on its higher pressure side 14, resulting in greater inward deflection of the leaves 20 on the lower pressure side of the seal than on its higher pressure side, leading in turn to greater wear of the leaves and the contacting rotor surface 44 on the lower pressure side 16 of the seal. A pressure chamber on a pressure side of the gas seal of the last stage which provides sealing against pressure discharge to the environment is connected to a relief line which opens into a pressure sink. A plurality of sealing gas lines are connected to a sealing gas feed line in which at least one control valve is arranged between junctions of different sealing gas lines.

Abstract: A system, in certain embodiments, includes a seal assembly having a seal body. The seal body includes an inlet buffer port and an outlet eduction port. The inlet buffer port is configured to receive a compressed buffer gas, such as shop air, which is injected into the inlet buffer port. The compressed buffer gas blocks the flow of a compressed process gas, such as land fill gas, by opposing the flow of the compressed process gas through the seal assembly. Both the compressed buffer gas and the compressed process gas may be expelled through the outlet eduction port.
