  • Patent number: 4685489
Abstract: A method and several embodiments of apparatus are disclosed for modulating the capacity of a gas compressor. A discharge valve member is formed with an opening therein and fluid communication between the compression chamber and a clearance pocket is selectively established by a slidable plunger element. In a first position, the plunger fills the opening in the discharge valve member to close fluid communication between the clearance pocket and the compression chamber. In a second position, the plunger element moves away from the valve member to establish fluid communication between the compression chamber and the clearance pocket, wherein the reexpansion volume is increased and the capacity of the compressor reduced. In the preferred embodiment, an apertured neck member is provided. The valve member is slidably guided by outer walls of the neck member, and the plunger has a stem designed to slidingly fit within the neck aperture.

  • Patent number: 4472111
Abstract: The present invention comprises an apparatus for producing high pressure fluid by means of a cylinder having a reciprocatingly sliding ram inside, suction and pressurization of the fluid being performed by the reciprocation of said ram. In the apparatus, an oil chamber is positioned on the intensifying side within said cylinder, and lubricating oil in said oil chamber is caused to have a pressure equivalent to that of the high pressure fluid produced. This oil pressure is transmitted to the slidable contact portions of the ram. The apparatus is capable of detecting the lack of lubricating oil, when such lack of lubricating oil occurs.

  • Patent number: 4431379
Abstract: A variable volume pump for satisfying the requirements of a hydraulic system while limiting fluid flow when the full volume of fluid displacement from the pump is not required by the hydraulic system. The pump includes one or more lines of reciprocable pumping pistons mounted radially around a crankshaft. The rotation of the crankshaft results in centrifugal flow of fluid through crankpin apertures for filling the pumping pistons. Each pumping piston reciprocates within a pumping chamber and the fluid volume filling the piston is directed through a discharge port to the hydraulic system. A valve piston is mounted within the pumping chamber in spaced apart opposing relationship to the pumping piston. The valve piston is normally seated against a valve seat when the pressure level in the hydraulic system is below that necessary to reduce flow.

  • Patent number: 4250843
Abstract: An engine internal-combustion engine having cylinders secured symmetrically spaced on a wheel rotor equipped with a main shaft and with their piston rods extending outwardly against a substantially saddle-shaped cam. The operation of the engine will make the reciprocating piston rods confront the undulating top surface of the cam and therefore revolve the internal-combustion cylinders themselves together with the wheel rotor along the undulating surface. The invention also includes an oil pressure cam receiver to cushion the cam confronting the piston rods and push the pistons to their maximum inward position in the cylinder to achieve a desired compression ratio of the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4157365
Abstract: An acceleration pump of a carburetor is constituted by a cylinder and a piston slidably received by the cylinder, so that the delivery rate of the acceleration fuel may be changed in accordance with the change of stroke of the piston within the cylinder. The stroke of the piston is limited by a stopper member adapted to be directly actuated by an incompressible temperature detecting element. The stopper member is so arranged as to be moved in the direction perpendicular to the stroking direction of the piston, so as to provide a fine adjustment of the stroke of the piston and, accordingly, an accurate control of the delivery of acceleration fuel in relation with the change of the engine temperature.

  • Patent number: 4035105
Abstract: A variable-output pump has an output-adjusting element which is acted upon by a differential piston arrangement having oppositely facing active surfaces of a smaller and of a larger active area. Control fluid is permanently admitted to the smaller active area of the differential piston arrangement to act on the same and urge the output-adjusting element of the pump toward a low-output position. A biasing spring acts against the force of the fluid acting on the smaller surface, and the control fluid is also selectively admitted to the larger surface to urge the adjusting element toward higher outputs. A control slide controls the admission of the control fluid to the larger surface of the differential piston arrangement and has a housing provided with a bore in which a slide is mounted for movement longitudinally of the bore. The slide has an end face acted upon by the control fluid and another end face acted upon by a spring.

  • Patent number: 3998570
Abstract: A piston type compressor for use in an automotive air conditioning system with variable pumping or compressing capacity which is automatically modulated in response to operating conditions. Compressor improvements are solely to the piston so that the present investment in fixed displacement compressors is not diminished. Previous compressors may be modified by the substitution of the improved pistons to create a variable capacity compressor. Specifically, the piston modifications include a pressure responsive displacement means on the piston end which extends into the compression chamber during portions of the intake stroke and compression stroke to effectively decrease the volumetric pumping capacity of the compressor whenever a predetermined low pressure is sensed.
