Patent number: 4293281Abstract: A compressor system which may be mounted for mobile use including dual power systems for driving the compressor. An electric motor is located in driving relationship to the compressor so that air is compressed when the rotor shaft of the motor is rotated. Rotation of the rotor shaft may be accomplished either by energizing the stator of the motor or by driving the rotor directly from an associated engine, coupled thereto by means of an electromagnetic clutch. If desired, the engine may also be utilized to drive a generator in order to provide electrical power to other devices. The control circuit may include safety interlocks which prevent energization of both the electric motor and the electromagnetic clutch simultaneously. Other safety devices may also be employed to disconnect power from the motor and the clutch, as necessary, if certain contaminants are sensed in the compressed air, to shut off the engine for over-limit conditions of temperature, air pressure, and the like.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1980Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Inventor: Charles L. Patent number: 4187173Abstract: Reverse osmosis, particularly for water desalination, is achieved using semipermeable membranes which selectively permeate purified water from a feed solution pressurized by reciprocating piston or diaphragm pump. Pump action is assisted by returning pressurized concentrate fluid acting on reverse side of the pump piston or diaphragm. Directional valves controlling alternating admission and venting of concentrate fluid to and from pump cylinder are actuated mechanically by reversal of force applied to the piston rod. Mechanical dwell is provided in the piston or diaphragm motion during directional valve actuation. Pump may be operated by a manual lever or by a crank mechanism on a low speed rotary shaft. An optional differential surge absorber provides continuity of feed solution circulation past membrane surfaces during the return pump stroke, thus minimizing detrimental salt concentration build-up on the membranes.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1978Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Inventor: Bowie G. Patent number: 4182127Abstract: A system for recovering otherwise lost power from a compressor and prime mover utilizing a Rankine cycle. While heat recovery from prime movers has been done, much energy is wasted by compressors which convert all the driving power to heat which has not been recovered. Thus, this invention provides for power recovery from both the prime mover and the compressor. A working fluid is pre-heated utilizing waste heat from the prime mover and compressor, such as that in the cooling medium, oil cooler, and the like. The pre-heated working fluid is passed to a boiler where it is vaporized and super heated and then is passed to a turbine or other type of expander. From the turbine, the working fluid goes to a condenser and is then pumped to the heat exchanger, or heat exchangers, to begin another cycle. The turbine or other type of expander is used to supplement the prime mover in driving the compressor or for any other suitable application of power.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1977Date of Patent: January 8, 1980Inventor: Robert H.
