  • Patent number: 4909704
Abstract: The barrel pump has at the lower end of its housing wall a sliding sleeve which--in the open position--exposes the inlet openings at the lower end of the housing wall and--in the closed position--in which it rests against a base plate, closes these inlet openings. The base plate projects in the radial direction beyond the housing wall and, consequently, closes the pump from below. Penetration by the liquid can, hence, only occur through the inlet openings provided on the periphery of the housing wall of the pump. Displacement of the sliding sleeve takes place in that at the underside of the sliding sleeve pressure pieces are provided, which in the close position project beyond the base plate downward and upon the pump being placed down due to the weight of the pump acting downward are displaced upward against the action of a spring acting on the sliding sleeve which frees the sliding sleeve from its sealing contact on the base plate and, consequently, permits entrance of the liquid through the inlet openings.

  • Patent number: 4712983
Abstract: A pneumatic pump has provision for being driven by a conventional electric hand drill and chuck that are un-modified so that they can be detached by loosening the chuck jaws and used for other purposes. The provision includes first and second input shafts protruding at right angles to each other and connected by a bevel gear on each. In addition to improving drive access, to provide a choice of drive ratios, the bevel gears have different diameters. The rotary output of the shaft and bevel gear arrangement drives a reciprocating piston in a cylinder that, in association with check valves and a hose connection, can inflate a pneumatic tire, at a speed and to a pressure, determined by which drive ratio is chosen. The drill can be freely swiveled about either input shaft to which attached. A gauge indicates cylinder pressure. A frame permits the assembly of drive and pump to be used to pressurize a tank for storage of compressed air.

  • Patent number: 4627797
Abstract: A standby aquarium pump is disclosed which contains a direct current power supply and relay means which will automatically connect this power supply to start the standby pump when alternating current power is interrupted causing the AC powered pump to stop operating. An alternate embodiment provides rectified alternating current as the normal power supply and the direct current power as a standby or auxiliary power source. A rotary direct current motor is employed to drive a reciprocating piston type air pump using an operating rod eccentrically mounted in a flywheel mounted on the motor drive shaft. Electric shock hazard is reduced by containing all 120 volt alternating current connections in a separate housing secured to the main housing. Thus, the main housing can safely be opened to install or replace the batteries by the user who will be exposed only to the low voltage direct current elements.

  • Patent number: 4172692
Abstract: Hydraulic surge protection is provided in a pumping plant by providing a synchronous motor/generator connected across the electrical power bus lines used to energize the motor operated pumps for pumping liquid through a pipeline. A fly wheel is provided on the synchronous motor/generator having an inertia to maintain the motor/generator operating in the event of an electrical power failure between the bus lines and source of electrical energy to generate and feed current to the pump drive motors through the bus lines to maintain pumping operation thereof. This pumping operation is maintained a sufficient length of time to minimize separation of the liquid column being pumped in the pipeline to an extent that damaging water hammer is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4095922
Abstract: A pump such as a vehicle air conditioner compressor has a compressor shaft, a continuously engine-driven flywheel and means such as an electromagnetic clutch for selectively coupling the flywheel to the shaft to operate the pump. The flywheel also provides a permanent magnet field which field rotates with the flywheel and induces in the windings of a relatively stationary annular stator assembly an electric voltage in response to the rotating magnetic field. The pump shaft, annular clutch actuating coil, annular stator assembly, and permanent magnet flywheel are all generally concentrically disposed and in the order stated. The flywheel is driven any time that the engine is running thereby inducing a voltage in the stator windings and that flywheel also drives the exemplary compressor when the clutch is actuated.

  • Patent number: 4063824
Abstract: An improved chemical dosimeter for individual use which collects on a filter particles or vapors present in an air stream which is being pumped through the dosimeter at a constant rate, the improvement is the use ofA variable drive pump that is connected to the filter and that is driven by an electric motor and is controlled by a feed back circuit of an integrator and an amplifier and maintains a constant flow of air through the dosimeter; The integrator receives a signal from a pressure switch that detects changes in the flow of the air stream through the dosimeter by a change in a pressure drop of the air which is being pumped through an orifice; The dosimeter is worn by an individual and at the termination of a period of time, such as a work day, the filter is removed and the collected contents are analyzed by conventional techniques such as gas chromatography to determine a level of exposure of the individual using the dosimeter.

  • Patent number: 4022548
Abstract: The open wire grid safety guard enclosure for a fan and its motor is rectangular box-like in shape and is made up of two substantially identical halves. Each half is made from identical cruciform blanks of grid mesh wires with parallel closely spaced wires extending in one direction and connected by more widely spaced cross wires, including marginal cross wires at the ends of the arms of the cross form. The arms of the cross form are bent inwardly of the box form through an angle of about 105.degree. from the planes of the centers of the blank. Hinge means connect the opposed marginal wires along one side edge of the box and are recessed inwardly of the planes of the outer edges of the sides by the angle of the bent arms. Releasable latch means connect other marginal wires at points spaced from the side with the hinge means. A plate welded to the center of one side of the box carries supporting connections to a fan motor and fan blade enclosed in the box.

  • Patent number: 3955065
Abstract: A hand-held hair-dryer comprises a substantially spherical casing containing an electric heating element associated with an impeller driven by an electric motor. The casing comprises first and second hemispherical caps joined together to form a spherical body with at least one our admission opening between the joined edges of the caps. The impeller is arranged for air to be drawn into the casing through the air admission opening, to then pass into contact with the heating element and finally to pass through the impeller for discharge through a radially directed air-ejection nozzle carried by one of the caps. The dimesions of the spherical casing are such that the hair-dryer can be grasped in the palm of the hand.

  • Patent number: 3953152
Abstract: A system for the linear control and calibration of the flow of fluid through a pump in which the pump has a linear flow rate-to-fluid propeller speed relationship over a range of flow rates. A DC motor driving the fluid propeller has a linear drive speed-to-armature voltage relationship over a corresponding range of drive speeds. The voltage applied to the armature is regulated DC, the value of which provides an indication of the fluid flow rate. The system has particular utility in portable air pollutant measuring applications where a measured volume of air is pumped through a filter tube filled with a porous solid sorbent which is later subjected to chemical analysis.

  • Patent number: 3953710
Abstract: A hair dryer comprises a motor-driven fan mounted in a casing part together with a heating element for heating the air flow generated by the fan and flowing from an air inlet grid structure to an air outlet grid structure on the casing part. This casing part is telescopically mounted within a main casing part whereby the air inlet and outlet grid structures of the first mentioned casing part are covered by the main casing part in the retracted position and are fully exposed in the extended position. A switch controlling the fan and heater element is actuated in response to movement of the first mentioned casing part from the retracted to the extended position of said casing part relative to the main casing part whereby the fan and heater element are energized only in the extended position.
