  • Publication number: 20020085934
Abstract: In the case of a feed device (1) for washer fluid, an electric motor (3) which is provided for driving a feed pump (4) has a housing (6) which is sealed in the upper region and an opening (11) which is arranged in the lower region level with the feed pump (4). Ventilation of the electric motor (3) takes place via this opening (11). In the event of a water level reaching the electric motor (3), for example if the motor vehicle passes through water, an air bubble is formed in the housing (6), said air bubble preventing water from penetrating into the electric motor (3).

  • Patent number: 6201327
Abstract: A motor protector for use in protecting an electric motor in a subterranean environment. The motor protector utilizes a dual chamber system for absorbing the expansion and contraction of the internal fluids of a submergible electric motor. One of the chambers provides for the expansion and contraction of the internal fluids of a submergible electric motor. The other chamber is in fluid communication with the subterranean environment. A gas pocket is disposed within the motor protector between and in fluid communication with both of the dual chambers. The volume of gas couples the fluid pressure of the subterranean environment to the internal fluids of the electric motor without direct contact between the internal fluids of the electric motor and fluids from the subterranean environment.

  • Patent number: 5855472
Abstract: A submersible seal that operates in a substantially frictionless manner is provided for protecting a motor from liquid intrusion along the shaft. Motors of this type are commonly used, for example, in aerators, pumps, mixers, flow developers, and the like. The submersible seal of the present invention includes a stationary seal element and a rotating seal element. The stationary seal element is in the form of a tubular section which is attached to the motor casing, surrounding but spaced from the rotating shaft. The rotating seal element, is a cylindrical section which is attached to the rotatable shaft and inter-engages the stationary seal element to form a labyrinth passageway having a first end at the casing of the motor, a second end opposite the first end, and at least one reverse bend therebetween. Liquid from the body of liquid in which the motor is immersed attempts to enter the first end of the labyrinth passage, and in so doing compresses an air cushion in the labyrinth passage.

  • Patent number: 5522709
Abstract: Fluid transfer apparatus comprising a fluid reservoir and a pump connected to the reservoir by a supply line, wherein the apparatus is configured so that vapor generated in the pump during periods of inoperation may escape from the pump cavity through the pump inlet, rather than being trapped in the pump cavity, and liquid may flow into the pump cavity from the supply line through the pump inlet to replace escaping vapor, thereby providing reliable pump start-up during intermittent operation. The apparatus may be employed to pump LNG for fueling of vehicles. Where LNG or another cryogenic fluid is being pumped, the pump is preferably driven by a motor located above the pump and connected thereto by an elongated shaft. Shaft seals may be provided to prevent the fluid being pumped from contacting the motor or the bearings supporting the motor shaft. A vapor trap may be provided beneath the shaft seals to prevent contact between liquid being pumped and the shaft seals.

  • Patent number: 4309157
Abstract: A protection column is employed about a sump pump to exclude liquid and foreign matter in the sump from entering the pump interior until a time just prior to priming and activation of the pump. The column has a closed bottom portion serving as a vessel and permitting the column to float as the liquid level rises in the sump. The upper part of the column fits about the pump to act as a guide and has a series of vertical slots. The column floats until the bottom of the column strikes the bottom of the sump pump, which prevents the column from rising further. As the water level continues to rise in the sump, water enters the column through the slots, causing the column to sink to the bottom of the sump and permitting the liquid to rise to a level in the pump commensurate with the level elsewhere in the sump, thereby priming the pump.

  • Patent number: 3999890
Abstract: All of the components of a sump pump apparatus necessary to be in the sump are enclosed in a common case. In one embodiment, this case is of plastic and holds the motor means, the pump impeller and at least part of the water level sensors. The motor means is in a bell holding trapped air so that the water cannot reach the motor means. In one such embodiment the motor means is a single D.C. motor and in another embodiment it consists of a D.C. motor coupled by a one-way clutch to an A.C. motor which in turn is connected to the pump impeller. In each of these two embodiments, the water level sensor includes a tube having an open end in the bell to sample the air pressure in the bell and an end externally of the sump connected to a pressure actuated switch which turns on the motor means at a particular air pressure above ambient. Also within the bell is a float operated switch serving as a back-up to the air actuated switch. Using two motors, as mentioned above, the A.C.
