  • Patent number: 5597293
Abstract: The end ring(s) and counterweight(s) attached to the rotor of a hermetic compressor are located within a cover which isolates them from the interior of the compressor. The cover may be fixed or it may rotate as a unit with the rotor, end ring and counterweight. In each embodiment the asymmetric counterweight is prevented from acting as a fan with respect to the interior of the shell and is thereby prevented from producing a pressure gradient tending to act on the sump and cause a higher oil circulation rate to the refrigeration system.

  • Patent number: 5597297
Abstract: A compressor has a fixed scroll and a movable scroll which has a first surface and a second surface. The first surface is opposed to the fixed scroll to define a displaceable fluid pocket. The movable scroll is supported on a rotary shaft via an eccentric pin to move along a predetermined orbit around an axis of the rotary shaft. Gas is introduced into and compressed in the fluid pocket. A boss is formed with the second surface of the movable scroll. A bushing is supported on the eccentric pin and rotatably received by the boss. The rotary shaft has an inner end surface for securely supporting the eccentric pin. A holding member engages the eccentric pin to hold the bushing in a predetermined position on the eccentric pin in corporation with the inner surface of the rotary shaft. A balance weight is secured around the bushing to cancel a dynamic imbalance of the movable scroll due to the orbital movement of the movable scroll.

  • Patent number: 5593297
Abstract: In a scroll type compressor, a simple structure provides oil intake assistance to ensure that lubricating oil in an oil space is induced into a spiral groove in correspondence to the rotation rate of a drive shaft. The drive shaft is provided with an inclined spiral groove which is formed in the external circumferential surface of the drive shaft. The drive shaft slides in contact with a main bearing. A leading end of the spiral groove, in the direction of the rotation of the drive shaft, communicates with the oil space and a trailing end of the spiral groove opens into the lubricating oil reservoir. The lubricating oil is supplied to the area where the drive shaft slides in contact with the main bearing by the spiral groove. Also, upon rotation of the drive shaft, intake of lubricating oil into the spiral groove is assisted when the suction force is reduced due to a high rotation rate.

  • Patent number: 5582513
Abstract: In a low speed rotation, side surfaces of a spiral wrap of a swivel scroll are brought into pressing contact with side surfaces of a spiral wrap of a stationary scroll to thereby keep an air tight condition therebetween. When the orbiting swivelling speed of the swivel scroll exceeds the predetermined level, a predetermined gap is kept between the side surfaces of the spiral wrap of the swivel scroll and the side surfaces of the spiral wrap of the stationary scroll to thereby prevent the abnormal wear of the spiral wraps and to thereby suppress an increase of the consumption power. A counterweight is provided on a drive bush for generating a centrifugal force Fc which is greater than a centrifugal force Fs applied to the swivel scroll during the orbiting swivelling motion of the swivel scroll and which is directed in an opposite direction to that of the centrifugal force Fs. A spring member is provided for biasing the drive bush in a direction .theta. in which the orbiting swivelling radius is increased.

  • Patent number: 5547354
Abstract: A compressor has a movable scroll supported on a bushing connected to a rotary shaft via an eccentric pin. The movable scroll and the bushing are disposed coaxial to the eccentric pin to rotate together with the eccentric pin. The movable scroll moves along a predetermined circular path around an axis of the rotary shaft to closely contact a fixed scroll, opposed to the movable scroll at a given portion to define a displaceable fluid pocket and compresses refrigerant gas introduced into the fluid pocket. The compressor comprises a first balance weight eccentrically supported on the eccentric pin for an integral rotation therewith. The first balance weight is arranged to generate first centrifugal force counteracting second centrifugal force generated in the movable scroll and the bushing based on the rotation of the movable scroll and the bushing.

If, during the assembly of the compressor, a ball from the rotation preventing/thrust bearing device rolls into the hollow portion or is accidentally dropped into the hollow portion, the balance weight member pushes the ball along the annular surface until it falls into the recessed portion. Further rotation of the balance weight locks the ball within the recessed portion, thereby preventing further rotation of the drive shaft. Therefore, defects in assembly due to the rotation prevention mechanism may be easily detected.

  • Patent number: 5458472
Abstract: A mechanism for allowing the orbital movement of an orbiting scroll with respect to a fixed scroll in a scroll type compressor which prevents the orbiting scroll from rotating around its own axis is disclosed. The orbiting scroll is eccentrically attached to a rotary shaft supported by a housing that encases the fixed and orbiting scrolls. A compression chamber is defined by the interfitting between the orbiting scroll and the fixed scroll. During the course of the orbiting scroll's rotation around the center axis line of a rotary shaft, the volume of a compression chamber decreases as the rotation progresses. Refrigerant gas in the compression chamber is compressed in this manner as the constant volume of gas within the compression chamber decreases in size according to the progression of the rotating spiral member. A balancing weight disposed on the eccentric shaft compensates for dynamic unbalancing generated as the orbiting scroll makes an orbital movement due to the rotation of the rotary shaft.

Abstract: A scroll compressor (10) with a fixed scroll (18) and an orbital scroll (20) has an axial thrust and anti-rotation assembly (22), a drive assembly (24), a balance assemblly (26) and a control system (28). The drive assembly (24) includes a crankshaft (116) and a bushing assembly (108). The bushing assembly includes a bushing body (146) with a slot (154) journaled on the orbital scroll and a drive lug (150) positioned in the slot and non-rotatably secured to the crankshaft (116). Springs (156) bias the bushing body toward a position in which the axis of the bushing body (178) coincides with the axis (176) of the crankshaft and the crankshaft can rotate without moving the orbital scroll (20). The bushing body (146) can be moved by compressed fluid to a position in which the springs (156) are compressed, the scroll wraps (34 and 56) are in sealing contact and the drive assembly will drive the orbital scroll (20) in a circular orbit with a radius R.

  • Patent number: 5247795
Abstract: An expander driven compressor assembly is disclosed comprising a scroll-type expander having at least one pair of meshed axially extending involute spiral wraps wherein one of the wraps orbits relative to the other wrap and a scroll-type compressor having at least one pair of relatively orbiting meshed axially extending involute spiral wraps. The orbital wrap of the expander is drivingly connected to the orbital wrap of the compressor through a common synchronizer and counterweight assembly. Auxiliary drive power developed by the expander and not required to drive the compressor is used to drive a power take-off shaft. In addition, expansion struts are proved to compensate for thermal expansion or contraction of the relatively orbiting scroll wraps. By this arrangement, a compact and efficient expander driven compressor assembly is achieved.

Abstract: A balance weight to equilibrate an inertial force due to reciprocation of an Oldham's ring is mounted so that a vibration due to an unbalanced inertial force of the Oldham's ring is transmitted in a direction perpendicular to or almost perpendicular to a connecting direction between the closed vessel and the accumulator, whereby a vibration resulting from an unbalanced inertial force of the compressor body due to the balance weight to equilibrate the inertial force on account of the reciprocation of the Oldham's ring is increased in a direction perpendicular to or almost perpendicular to the connecting direction between the closed vessel and the accumulator. The vibration, however, is reduced in the connecting direction or in a direction close to the connecting direction. As a result, vibrations of pipes connecting the closed vessel to the accumulator are reduced, and reduction of noise of the overall air conditioning system is attained.
