Patent number: 6300007Abstract: An alloy for casting terminals for lead-acid batteries which has good corrosion resistance, produces less dross during manufacturing, has resistance to polypropylene degradation, as well as other improved features. The alloy is composed of antimony present in the range of about 2.5-4.75%; arsenic present in the range of about 0.15-0.35%; tin present in the range of about 0.23-0.6%; copper present in the range of about 0-200 ppm; sulfur present in the range of about 0-40 ppm and the balance lead. In an alternative embodiment, copper and sulfur are replaced with selenium in the range of about 40-90 ppm.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1998Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: Johnson Controls Technology CompanyInventors: Lena N. Klebanov, Christian P. Hansen, David A. Wynn, Glenn M. Trischan, Charles J. Schaeffer

Patent number: 5508125Abstract: A cast strap for a lead-acid battery is made of a lead-based alloy consisting essentially of from about 2.5 to 3.5 wt. % antimony, about 0.01 to 0.5 wt. % arsenic, about 0.01 to 0.5 wt. % tin, about 0.008 to 0.1 wt. % selenium, and the balance lead. The content of at least one of arsenic, tin and selenium is within the following ranges: about 0.075 to 0.5 wt. % tin, about 0.1 to 0.5 wt. % arsenic, and 0.021 to 0.03 wt. % selenium. For lead-based alloys containing antimony, arsenic, tin and selenium, increased additions of antimony, arsenic, and selenium generally have a favorable effect on long term corrosion resistance of battery straps in a lead-acid battery environment, whereas tin has an unfavorable effect such that increased amounts of tin dramatically lower high temperature corrosion resistance.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Globe-Union Inc.Inventors: Paul E. Patent number: 5350591Abstract: A formulation for a food additive in the form of a dry powdered mixture is disclosed. The mixture is used with a hot coffee beverage--freshly brewed or prepared from instant coffee--to form a foamed head thereon. The formulation consists of a sugar, sodium bicarbonate, a releasing agent having at least two-components, and a hydrating agent. In the best mode of practicing the invention, the hydrating agent is gelatinized starch which controls both the skin-forming characteristics and the longevity of the foamed head. To preserve flavor and aroma, the total of sodium bicarbonate and the two-component releasing agent aggregates no more than 5% by weight of the food additive, the flavor remains unimpaired. Another aspect is that the foamed head formed has a skin thereover that simulates the skin formed on espresso coffee using a more complicated mode of preparation.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1992Date of Patent: September 27, 1994Assignee: Guantanamo Bay, Inc.Inventor: Silvia T. Patent number: 5169734Abstract: Automotive SLI lead-acid batteries are disclosed which are characterized by enhanced resistance to intercell connection corrosion, even when exposed to the current, relatively high under-the-hood service temperatures in use with recent model automobiles. The straps are formed from a lead-based alloy including from about 3.0 to 3.3% antimony, from about 0.04 to 0.07% tin, from about 0.04 to 0.07% arsenic and from about 0.014 to 0.020% selenium, the percentages being based upon the weight of the alloy.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1991Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: GNB IncorporatedInventors: Purushothama Rao, Steven R. Patent number: 4753688Abstract: A process is provided for increasing the strength of antimony-lead alloys by specially treating an alloy which contains an effective amount of arsenic in the alloy, the process comprising working the alloy, rapidly heat treating the alloy, which includes quenching, for a period of time sufficient to activate a strengthening mechanism in the alloy. The process is especially useful for the manufacture of battery grids on a continuous production line.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1986Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Asarco IncorporatedInventor: Michael Myers

Patent number: 4525327Abstract: A lead based alloy for electrode supports of a lead-acid storage cell, the alloy containing between 0.05% and 4% antimony between 0.02% and 0.3% magnesium, and no barium. The magnesium permits a reduced antimony content, thereby reducing the corrosion, self-discharge, and hydrogen-releasing overvoltage problems caused by the presence of antimony in electrode supports, without adversely affecting the beneficial mechanical properties provided by antimony. It is essential to have no barium, which causes cracking and high mass corrosion of the alloy during use in a lead-acid cell.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1982Date of Patent: June 25, 1985Assignee: Compagnie Europeenne d'AccumulateursInventors: Roland Bardin, Joel Mack, Jean-Jacques Counioux

Patent number: 4443405Abstract: The grain size and resistance to corrosion of lead-antimony alloys containing less than 4% of antimony and 0.005 to 0.1% copper, are improved by incorporating therein from 0.001 to 0.1% of a mixture of rare earths, preferably misch metal. The alloys may also contain up to 0.5% arsenic or up to 0.8% of tin.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1982Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Assignee: Societe Anonyme dite Compagnie Europeene d'AccumulateursInventors: Gerard Dalibard, Nicole Viaud
