Abstract: An herbal-based oral composition for promoting darkening of human hair color upon periodic retention of the composition within the oral cavity includes an herbal mixture included at a level of from 2.5 to 15% of the total weight of the herbal mixture in a toothpaste or chewing gum base. The herbal mixture includes prepared Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Calculus Bovis, Indigo Naturalis, Herba Ecliptae, Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Pericarpium Trichosanthis, Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, Spina Gleditsiae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Drynariae, Fructus Mori, and Halitum. The composition is found effective at darkening hair color when held in the oral cavity for a short period of time two times a day for a period of six weeks.

It is effective for curing or preventing diseases caused by disorder in blood circulation such as hypertension, angina pectories, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, frostbite, chilblain, cold constitution, and alopecia.

Abstract: Aloe water containing no aloesin is obtained by forming a pulp from aloe leaves, boiling the pulp at a reduced pressure to obtain vapors, condensing the vapors, and collecting the vapors. The pulp is optionally fermented before boiling. The aloe water can be used for treating skin and hair.

The glyceride content of C.sub.14 -C.sub.22 fatty acid starting material is hydrolyzed with a water-soluble basic compound such as sodium carbonate in the first step of the process. A biologically active constituent such as methionine hydroxy analog can be incorporated as an additional ingredient during the processing.

The starting material is held for a relatively long period of time in a vessel provided with a drain device, and the drainage is collected via a collecting tray and then allowed to stand for relatively long periods of time. Finally, the extract is made up with an oil compatible with the skin or an alcohol compatible with the skin to make the desired hair tinctures or skin oils. In addition, the preparation provides the hair with body, fullness and sheen while strengthening the hair shafts so as to minimize breakage while at the same time not appearing greasy. Members of the new class of compounds are comprised of a hexose sugar having fatty acids attached at the 2, 3 and 4 positions of the hexose moiety. The fatty acids can be saturated or unsaturated, and can have a relative molecular size of up to C.sub.30. When at least one of the acylating fatty acid groups on the hexose molecule contains more than 7 carbons, the resulting 2,3,4-tri-O-acylhexoses (or mixtures thereof) have a non-bitter taste. On the other hand, when none of the acylating fatty acids have more than 7 carbons, the resulting 2,3,4-tri-O-acylhexoses (and mixtures that contain them) are bitter when tasted.The new 2,3,4-tri-O-acylhexoses can be synthesized using known chemical methods. Alternatively, the new compounds, and especially mixtures thereof, are obtained as the result of selective extraction and purification of the epicuticular exudate from Lycopersicon pennellii plant parts.
