Patent number: 5609879Abstract: A method of treating a population of social insects includes applying topically to the insect a composition comprising a carrier and an active ingredient. The composition provides a coating that adheres to the insect and is groomable and ingestible by other insects to distribute the active ingredient within the population. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the composition includes sulfluramid as an active ingredient and an air dryable resin as a carrier. A trap for collection of insects controls temperature within the trap to promote recruitment and also drive the insects to a collection area where they may be treated.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1995Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Inventor: Timothy G. Patent number: 5607684Abstract: Baits useful in the control of insect populations are made by a process that includes the steps of: (a) forming droplets of a homogeneous, substantially water-free mixture comprising: (i) 0.01-99 wt % of a feeding stimulant in the form of a finely divided particulate or liquid; (ii) 0.01-99 wt % of an insecticide; and (iii) a molten, polymeric binder composition that is solid at 25.degree. C. and exhibits a melting point within the range from about 35.degree. C. to about 65.degree. C.; and (b) making particulate baits from the droplets by cooling the droplets to a temperature below the melting point of the mixture. The absence of added water permits the use of active insecticidal ingredients that are generally temperature sensitive to the drying temperatures needed for commercial spray drying operations as well as those sensitive to the presence of water during extended storage and transport periods. The use of the present water-free process avoids hydrolysis of the active insecticide during those periods.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: March 4, 1997Assignee: Micro Flo CompanyInventors: Chel W. Patent number: 5503839Abstract: An improved method is proposed for the preparation of a sex pheromone dispenser used in the elimination of pest insects from the field by the disruption of mating of the insects by distributing sustained-release dispensers containing the sex pheromone compound of the insect over the field. According to the invention, pheromone dispensers made from a polyolefin-based resin and filled with the liquid pheromone are subjected, prior to distribution over the field at a relatively low temperature in early spring, to a pretreatment of keeping them at 35.degree. to 60.degree. C. until the dispenser walls of the polyolefin resin absorb 2 to 10% by weight of the pheromone. When the dispensers after the pre-treatment are distributed, a relatively high rate of pheromone release can be obtained at the low temperature as compared with untreated dispensers so that the rate of pheromone release can be relatively uniform over the whole period of the season in which the pheromone dispensers are kept over the field.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1994Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Ryuichi Saguchi, Kinya Ogawa, Akira Yamamoto

Patent number: 5324517Abstract: An adhesive composition for a insect-control agent, such as gypsy moth pheromone beads, provides retention and water insolubility to such pesticide upon deposit of an aqueous mixture of such adhesive composition and insect-control agent. The adhesive composition concentrate comprises a salt such as sodium sulfate, an ethoxylated alkylphenol, a polymeric adhesive material, and a high molecular weight acrylate polymer.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1993Date of Patent: June 28, 1994Assignee: Nalco Chemical CompanyInventor: Charles C. Patent number: 5296227Abstract: A decoy which includes the attraction, aggregation and attachment components of bont tick pheromones is used to attract hungry male, female, and nymph bont ticks to a location where an acaricide can kill the ticks. The decoy can be disk shaped and can be attachable to the hair or fur of an animal. The decoy may also be in the form of a tail band decoy where the decoy is used to dispense the pheromones and acaricide on those portions of the host animal's body not normally protected by grooming mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1991Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Assignees: Old Dominion University, The University of FloridaInventors: R. Patent number: 5296220Abstract: Compounds useful as cockroach attractants, the synthesis of the compounds, and methods of controlling cockroach populations with the compounds are disclosed. The compounds are pyrans having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 is a methyl, ethyl, propyl, or methoxy group andR.sup.2 is a branched alkyl side chain having from 7 to 11 carbons. Preferably, R.sup.2 is a 2,4-dimethyl-substituted alkyl group. Most preferably R.sup.1 is methyl and R.sup.2 is 2,4-dimethylheptanyl. The pyrans can be used as an attractant in cockroach traps comprising, in addition to a pyran according to Formula (I) above, a support and a cockroach restraint. Alternatively, the pyran of the present invention can be combined with a biocontrol agent or an insecticide to form a cockroach control composition.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1992Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Inventors: Wendell L. Roelofs, Coby Schal, Francis X. Webster, Ralph E. Charlton, Aijun Zhang
