Abstract: Quaternized polyamine polymers are employed in cosmetic compositions for application to the hair or skin. The polymer has recurring units of the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN A is polymethylene having 2-10 carbon atoms, B is selected from polymethylene having 3-10 carbon atoms, xylylidenyl group --CH.sub.2 --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --CH.sub.2 -- ortho, meta or para, --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.x -- wherein x is 2 or 3, or --CH.sub.2 --CHOH--CH.sub.2 --; R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 represent an aliphatic radical having 1-12 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 represent an aliphatic radical having 1-20 carbon atoms; R.sub.5 is hydrogen or an aliphatic, alicyclic, aryl or arylaliphatic radical containing 1-20 carbon atoms; R.sub.6 is an aliphatic or arylaliphatic radical containing 1-20 carbon atoms; X is a halide anion; Y is selected from a halide anion, SO.sub.4 H.sup..crclbar. or CH.sub.3 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. ; and n and p are whole numbers with p being able to be 0, such that the ratio p/n+p ranges from 0 to 0.95.

Abstract: A method for treating a scalp characterized by an excessive secretion of sebum, to improve the condition thereof by reducing said excessive secretion comprising orally administering to a human being having a scalp so characterized a therapeutic composition comprising an ingestible carrier admixed with, as a non-toxic active compound, cysteine or cysteamine derivatives, the active compound is present in amounts of about 0.75-3 weight percent of the composition which is administered at a rate of about 1-5 mg/kg/day based on the weight of the human being during a period of about 15 days.

Abstract: The invention is directed to emulsion compositions of, or including, bile acids, their conjugates, lower alcohol esters or salts of said acids or conjugates; water to effect solution of one or more of said defined bile acids; and at least one of: glycerides; phospholipids; fatty acids, amino fatty acids, or fatty acid amides; and steroids. Illustrative are sodium taurocholate, glyceryl monooleate, soy lecithin, oleic acid and cholesterol acetate. The emulsion compositions in conjunction with oil and/or water phase(s) can be controlled to give an emulsion product which is substantially stable water/oil type or oil/water type, or metastable mixture of water/oil and oil/water types. The emulsion product has utility in many fields such as cosmetics, dentifrices, food products, cleaners, lubricants, agricultural chemicals, etc; The emulsion composition itself has utility in many of these fields.

Abstract: Preventive as well as therapeutic treatment to alleviate the symptoms of diseases characterized by defects in keratinization consisting of the topical application of a solution, lotion, cream or shampoo containing one or more of the .alpha.-hydroxy or .alpha.-keto acid amides and/or ammonium salts is disclosed. The compounds include amide and/or ammonium salt forms of citric acid, glycolic acid, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, glucuronolactone, gluconolactone, .alpha.-hydroxybutyric acid, .alpha.-hydroxyisobutyric acid, malic acid, mandelic acid, pyruvic acid, .beta.-phenyllactic acid, .beta.-phenylpyruvic acid, saccharic acid, tartaric acid, tartronic acid and .beta.-hydroxybutyric acid. The therapeutic composition may include one or more of the compounds present in a total amount of from 1 to 20 percent. Topical application to affected areas has been found to achieve from a substantial to a complete remission of dandruff and acne.

Abstract: A method and composition for combatting the greasy and unaesthetic appearance of the hair and to improve the appearance of the skin comprises in a carrier at least one active component of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl or .beta.-hydroxyethyl, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together form --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, ##STR2## and R is (i) linear or branched alkyl having 1-18 carbon atoms, (ii) alkenyl having 3-18 carbon atoms, (iii) alkyl having 2-3 carbon atoms and substituted by 1-2 alcohol functions, (iv) --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --CH(OR.sub.3).sub.2 wherein R.sub.3 is alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms and m is 1-2, (v) --(CH.sub.2).sub.n R.sub.4 wherein n is 0, 1 or 2 and R.sub.4 is 2-pyridyl or phenyl, (vi) --(CH.sub.2).sub.q R'.sub.4 wherein q is 0 or 1 and R'.sub.

Abstract: A method for improving the appearance of the greasy skin of the face of a person having a skin so characterized, which comprises topically applying to the skin of the face an effective amount of a composition containing as an active ingredient a cis or trans 3,4-thiolannediol, its cis or trans S-oxide derivatives or its cis or trans S-dioxide derivatives.

Abstract: A composition for treating oily hair or skin to reduce the oily appearance thereof comprises in an appropriate vehicle an active compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.3 is lower alkyl containing 1-3 carbon atoms; n= 0 or 1 with the proviso that when n= 0, ##STR2## and when n= 1, R.sub.2 is hydrogen; and HX represents a mineral or organic acid. The composition can be applied topically or be orally administered to a person whose hair or skin has an oily appearance to reduce said oily appearance.

Abstract: Novel unsymmetrical disulfides of pyridine-1-oxide and acid addition salts thereof, having particular utility as antimicrobial agents per se and in skin cleansing detergent compositions, shampoos, hair dressings, disinfectants, preservatives and the like.

Abstract: A composition for grooming or dressing hair which comprises a blended mixture of minor amounts of petroleum, rectified tar oil, sulfur, phenol, oxyquinoline, pine oil and castor oil in a petroleum jelly base. The material has been found to be useful and effective in grooming the hair, making unruly hair more easily manageable, controlling loose dandruff and lubricating the hair to improve its appearance and texture.
