    Abstract: Quaternized polyamine polymers are employed in cosmetic compositions for application to the hair or skin. The polymer has recurring units of the formula: ##STR1## WHEREIN A is polymethylene having 2-10 carbon atoms, B is selected from polymethylene having 3-10 carbon atoms, xylylidenyl group --CH.sub.2 --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --CH.sub.2 -- ortho, meta or para, --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.x -- wherein x is 2 or 3, or --CH.sub.2 --CHOH--CH.sub.2 --; R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 represent an aliphatic radical having 1-12 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 represent an aliphatic radical having 1-20 carbon atoms; R.sub.5 is hydrogen or an aliphatic, alicyclic, aryl or arylaliphatic radical containing 1-20 carbon atoms; R.sub.6 is an aliphatic or arylaliphatic radical containing 1-20 carbon atoms; X is a halide anion; Y is selected from a halide anion, SO.sub.4 H.sup..crclbar. or CH.sub.3 SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. ; and n and p are whole numbers with p being able to be 0, such that the ratio p/n+p ranges from 0 to 0.95.

The compounds include amide and/or ammonium salt forms of citric acid, glycolic acid, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, glucuronolactone, gluconolactone, .alpha.-hydroxybutyric acid, .alpha.-hydroxyisobutyric acid, malic acid, mandelic acid, pyruvic acid, .beta.-phenyllactic acid, .beta.-phenylpyruvic acid, saccharic acid, tartaric acid, tartronic acid and .beta.-hydroxybutyric acid. The therapeutic composition may include one or more of the compounds present in a total amount of from 1 to 20 percent. Topical application to affected areas has been found to achieve from a substantial to a complete remission of dandruff and acne.
