    Abstract: An open tube apparatus and method for continuously producing a rotating elongate strip of material are disclosed. An extrusion die continuously extrudes flowable material to form an open tube with a central longitudinal cavity and a transport mechanism includes a plurality of drive rollers which engage and pull the tube downline. A driver rotates the extrusion die and transport mechanism. A tube cutter, which is offset at an angle with respect to the downline direction and defines the open end of the tube, cuts the tube into a continuous elongate web of the desired width as the tube moves downline. An air seal seals the tube cavity to prevent air from escaping through the open end of the cavity, and a tube pressurizer controls air pressure in the central longitudinal cavity of the tube to expand the tube laterally outwardly.

    Abstract: A method of producing a multicomponent extrudate in which the operating line automatically and accurately extrudes the extrudate materials necessary to obtain the desired contribution of materials and specified dimensions of the multicomponent extrudate profile. The screw speed of each extruder can be adjusted to the desired speed by determining the actual thickness and width dimensions of the multicomponent extrudate. The actual measurements are then fed to a computer which calculates the corresponding values of the ratios of the extruder screw speeds to line speed. using the specified dimensions desired in the extrudate, the corresponding values for the screw and line speeds are also calculated. A comparison of the speeds based on measured dimensions, with the speeds based on specified dimensions, provides a measurement by which the screw speeds may then be adjusted such that the measurements of the extrudate profile are brought closer to the specified dimensions of the multicomponent extrudate profile.

    Abstract: An extruder has a housing, a core centered on an axis, and a sleeve spacedly coaxially surrounding the core and defining therewith an outlet passage. Thus molten material emerges from the passage as a tube. A plurality of radially extending and angularly spaced adjustment screws are threaded into the housing and radially engage the sleeve so that these screws can be screwed in and out to radially displace the sleeve on the housing and thereby adjust the passage. A detecting unit axially downstream of the extruder includes at least one sensor for measuring the thickness of the tube at a plurality of angularly spaced locations and for producing an output corresponding to the respective measured thickness. An adjustment unit including at least one rotary tool engageable with the screws can selectively rotate same and screw same in the housing.

    Abstract: A dough-stretching roller apparatus is provided to produce a continuous web of dough in a process to manufacture confectionery and bread. The apparatus includes a pair of upper rollers, a sensor means that detects the width of dough at the gap between the upper rollers, and a controller that controls a motor driving the upper rollers in response to a signal from the sensor means. The controller decreases the rotational speed of the upper rollers when the sensors detect that the width of dough is broader than a predetermined width of dough passing through the upper rollers, while the controller increases the rotational speed of the upper rollers when the sensors detect that the width of dough is narrower than the predetermined width of the dough passing through the upper rollers. Thus, even if the amount of dough supplied from a hopper is unstable, production of a stretched web of dough having a constant volume per unit length can be stably continued.

The adjustable passages are formed by two spaced inclined surfaces at the downstream end of the passages. The thickness of the passages is varied by axially moving one surface relative to the other. The moveable inclined surface is carried on an annular ring member mounted in the die head. In one embodiment, the ring is replaceable with another ring member to axially move the surface, thereby adjusting the layer thickness. In another embodiment, the ring member is threadably mounted in the die head so that rotation of the ring causes axial movement of the surface to adjust layer thickness.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a tubular stretching method for producing a stretched film by passing a tubular thermoplastic resin film between pairs of nip rolls having mutually different peripheral speeds and by inflating the tubular film with internal pressure under heating and a stretching apparatus to be employed therefor. The pairs of nip rolls include at least three pairs of nip rolls. Pressurized air is admitted into a stretched bubble situated between the first and second rolls through a slit-like air injecting nozzle, and the bubble formed by the supplied pressurized air is inflated and stretched under heating. In this stage, if desired, the amount of injected pressurized air is controlled by manual or automatic control by detecting the diameter of the bubble so as to keep the bubble's diameter constant. After stretching, the tubular film is collapsed and is introduced to the second nip rolls. Both side ends of the collapsed film are cut open with film cutting knives to make two sheets of flat films.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for manufacturing biaxially oriented film. A tubular original film which has been extruded by an extruding die is biaxially oriented by heat and air injected to the inside portion thereof being conveyed to nip rolls each having an individual circumferential speed. The temperature of heat to be applied to the film is controlled on the basis of the detected film thickness for the purpose of obtaining a uniform film thickness distribution. Furthermore, the film can be made uniform by adjusting the outer diameter of the bubble-shaped oriented film by adjusting the distance between two sets of nip rolls on the basis of the measured width of the film. In addition, when the thus-oriented film is subjected to a heat treatment, temperature of heat is arranged to be a predetermined temperature as to prevent adhesion of the films.

    Abstract: An apparatus for laying a mat of fibrous material which includes an upwardly inclined belt onto which the fibrous material is fed, one or more combing roller located above the belt, a stripping roller at the upper end of the belt for removing the material from the belt and passing it into a mechanism for laying the material into a mat. The angle of inclination of the incline belt and the position of the first combing roller as such that the material can build up to reach a critical angle of repose and then slide back down. A second combing roller located upstream of the first combing roller serves to comb the material to a constant depth, and the speed of the incline belt is adjustable to determine the amount of material leaving the incline belt and thus regulate the thickness of the formed mat.

    Abstract: The thickness distribution across a sheet material, formed by biaxially stretching a molten material web delivered from a die, is automatically controlled by a control processing wait. A correspondence relationship between adjustment of adjusting means arranged on the die and the variation of thickness distribution of the sheet material after formation thereof is sequentially estimated using a Kalman filter built into the control processing unit. Responsive to the estimated relationship, the adjusting means are controlled by optimum amounts in order to enable the thickness distribution to approach a target distribution. The accuracy of thickness control of the sheet material can be greatly increased and accurate control can automatically follow any variation in the conditiond of a sheet forming process. The correspondence relationship between the thickness distribution of the sheet material and the adjusting means on the die can be monitored and displayed.

    Abstract: A pipe of thermoplastic polymer, e.g. polyvinylchloride is extruded by an extruder comprising an extrusion die (2) having a moulding end part (2a) with heating elements (11) located about said end part. The wall thickness of the pipe is controlled in order to obtain a pipe of a substantially even wall thickness. For said control the wall thickness of the extruded pipe is measured at 360 points equally distributed over the circumference and moreover the average is determined in eight measuring sectors comprising 45 measuring points per sector. The average of the measuring values of one measuring sector is compared with the circumferential average of the 360 points, the deviation of the desired wall thickness in said one sector being counter balanced by the action of the heating elements. In a preferred embodiment a polyvinylchloride pipe obtained by means of an two screw extruder presents an even wall thickness over the circumference.

The die includes a plurality of discrete sectors each having a controllable heat source and a temperature sensor, and the temperature at each particular sector is controlled and adjusted in order to change the measured wall thickness corresponding with that particular sector as necessary to provide a desired wall thickness distribution. A characteristic curve for the particular material is provided as an input quantity and involves the relationship between a change in extrusion temperature versus the corresponding change in wall thickness, and that relationship is utilized to effect rapid adjustment of wall thickness by means of a temperature change in order to provide a finished article having the desired thickness profile and without having excessive material, to thereby reduce the weight and cost of the extruded article.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining dough that takes into account the different flow regimes exhibited by the dough during processing. As in conventional systems, the apparatus includes a hopper for extruding dough in a sheet and pairs of powered rollers for sizing the sheet. A computer controls the system. Mass flow rate is made constant throughout the system by establishing a master flow rate based upon predetermined criteria related to the product being produced, and the computer monitors the weight of the extruded sheet to maintain a constant input to the powered rollers. The flow rate is varied to remain constant by comparing the input to output, as measured by the sheet thickness at the cutter station. The gage rollers are controlled by setting a nominal roller speed, trimmed according to the tension present in the sheet upstream of the gage roll, as reflected in the position of a loop in the dough sheet between the gage roll and the pair of rolls immediately upstream of same.
