Abstract: A system for pressing lignocellulosic and/or cellulosic materials to produce composite products such as medium density fiberboard subjects a mat of material to alternating or vibratory forces applied to a face surface of the mat. The frequency of the alternating forces may be between 0.2 Hz and 2 Hz. This vibratory pressing action causes heat to be transferred more quickly to the core of the mat from the surface, and reduces the pressing time required for thermosetting resins within the mat to cure. The system comprises a press for accepting the mat; a sensor for sensing a parameter indicative of heat in the core of the mat; and a control system for controlling the application of vibratory and non-vibratory forces to the mat.

Abstract: A temperature control unit for dies and molds, particularly for pressure die-casting or injection-molding of aluminum and alloys thereof, plastic materials and the like, comprising a die or mold cooling circuit through which pressurized water flows. A water feed pump is connected to the circuit and is adjustable to a pressure which is higher than the evaporation pressure of water at a preheating temperature of the water, which can be detected by a first sensor for detecting the temperature of the water. The circuit includes a circulation pump, a water overflow valve which can be set to a lower pressure than the feed pump, and a heating unit which is controlled by the first temperature sensor. A die or mold temperature sensor is further provided which controls the feed pump.

Abstract: A method of continuously forming integrally molded structures includes the steps of rotating a plurality of independently movable multisection mold assemblies about a plurality of axes, successively flowing a plurality of polymerizable mixtures over surfaces of each enclosed mold cavity while selectively heating mold sections thereof in a preselected heating profile and monitoring the flowing of each mixture, the heating of the mold sections and the formation of resins therefrom. The monitored mixture flowing, the mold section heating and the formation of each resin are coordinated with each monitored axis rotation. The molded structure is removed after it has achieved structural integrity within the mold cavity, and the steps are repeated to form a multiplicity of the integrally molded structures on a continuing basis. Also, multiaxis molding apparatus for conducting the above method.

  • Patent number: 6532799
Abstract: A system for in-situ and on-line monitoring of a preform layup process for liquid composite molding allows for gathering of permeability measurements of a fabric preform for use in a liquid composite molding process after situation of the preform within the mold wherein the molding process is to occur. The system uses a plurality of pressure sensors located within one of the mold sections of the liquid composite molding process mold. The sensors take pressure measurements which are processed to obtain a permeability profile of the preform. From such data, any local permeability variations that are caused from defects in the preform, deformation of the preform, or from mold misfit can be noted and acted upon before resin flow. The system is relatively simple to use and is easy to implement.

  • Patent number: 6530765
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus is provided for extruding ePTFE tube for use in medical applications. A tube of PTFE is extruded, preferably in an extrusion process, using counter-rotated die components. The die component is maintained at a constant temperature during processing. The resulting green tube has enhanced fibrous state formation in a direction perpendicular to the direction of extrusion. The PTFE green tube is then subjected to secondary operations such as stretching and expansion to yield medical product. The ePTFE tube structure is defined by nodes interconnected by elongate fibrils. Both the nodes and fibrils are substantially randomly tilted with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tube. This particular structure yields a tube which exhibits a high degree of radial tear strength useful in medical applications.
