  • Patent number: 5035600
Abstract: Apparatus for converting thermoplastic blanks into shaped articles has a wheel-shaped conveyor which carries an outwardly extending link for a coupling which can engage successive blanks of a series of blanks during advancement along a first portion of its endless path. The blank is transported through a heating unit and thereupon enters the cavity of a mold to be converted into a shaped article which is removed from the mold and is delivered to an article receiving unit. The blank heating unit, the mold and the article receiving unit are respectively adjacent to second, third and fourth portions of the endless path. The conveyor can be driven at a variable speed and in stepwise fashion to be decelerated during advancement of a blank through the heating unit and to come to a halt while the blank is being converted into a shaped article. Alternatively, the link can be pivoted in and counter to the direction of rotation of the conveyor to thus accelerate or decelerate the coupling relative to the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4998871
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for lining a pipe wherein a thermoplastic liner is initially formed in a cylindrical shape with a diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the pipe. The liner is temporarily deformed at an elevated temperature to a different cross-section, preferably U-shaped, to reduce its overall cross-sectional dimension to facilitate insertion into the pipe to be lined. The deformation occurs with substantially comparable elongation of the pipe lining along its opposite sides thereby precluding variations in wall thickness and stress in the pipe. Once inserted, the liner is pressurized and reheated first to a temperature below its crystallization temperature to round the lining in the pipe and subsequently, further pressurized and reheated to a second temperature higher than the crystallization temperature to cause the liner to retain its original round shape.

At the other side, which forms the top side, a contact adhesive coating uniformly covers the supporting or carrier fabric so as to essentially form a plane which uninterruptedly engages a separating paper layer. Due to the crossing or intersection points formed by warp and weft threads of the supporting fabric such supporting fabric produces unevenness only at the bottom side, resulting in a smaller adhesive capability or action of the lower contact adhesive coating as compared to the adhesive capability or action of the upper contact adhesive coating uniformly engaging the separating paper layer. The extruder barrel is divided into a plurality of heating zones and a zone temperature control means individually controls the temperature of each zone in accordance with predetermined zone temperature set points. A melt temperature control means automatically adjusts certain zone temperature set points such that the actual melt temperature is maintained at its desired value. The speed of a rotatable extruder screw is controlled by a melt pressure control means such that the actual melt pressure is maintained at its desired value. In accordance with the present invention, a separate feedforward controller and separate feedback controller are provided in the melt temperature control loop and in each zone temperature control loop such that independent specification of set point and disturbance responses can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 4158539
Abstract: A thermoforming machine having opposed mold platens includes a linkage system driven in cyclic movement by a single rotary cam to cyclically shift the platens between their open and closed position. The cam is driven by a variable speed motor which is controlled in a manner such that the rotary speed of the cam during different portions of a cam revolution may be set to a speed which is different than the rotary speed of the cam during other portions of each revolution. By adjusting the speed differential or by adjusting the angular extent of that portion of a revolution of the cam over which the different speed is maintained the time duration of any chosen portion of the cycle may be adjusted independently of the time duration of other portions of the cycle. The platens are mounted for reciprocatory movement upon a three-post frame.

  • Patent number: 4047870
Abstract: A molding press for forming articles from thermoplastic sheet materials comprises a generally hollow, fluid-tight housing, the lower surface of which comprises a flexible gas-tight diaphragm. The housing is movably positioned above a flat base, on which there is placed a mold covered with a softened sheet of thermoplastic material. During a molding cycle, the housing is lowered and interlocked with the base bringing the diaphragm adjacent the mold, and a fluid under pressure is introduced into the housing, causing the diaphragm to exert a uniform force on the thermoplastic sheet and forcing it to assume the contours of the mold. The base is equipped with mechanical and electrical interlock means which cooperate with the housing to insure that the fluid pressure cannot be applied until the housing and the base are safely interlocked and that the housing cannot be separated from the base while fluid pressure is supplied to the housing.
