  • Patent number: 5221541
Abstract: An extruder head made up of several segments including a first section made up of at least two plates bolted together. At least one plate is hingeably mounted to another plate in the first section to provide access to an extrudate passage defined by the plates. Downstream of the first section is a pair of mating blocks bolted to the first section further defining the extrudate passage. Inserts of hardened steel are provided and held by the plates and blocks forming the extruder head and the inserts define parts of the extrudate passage. A cooling liquid chamber is provided in at least one insert to cool the wall forming the passage. Although the passage is continuously restricted in the downstream direction, to increase the pressure of the elastomeric melt, intermittent portions of a slightly greater cross-sectional area are provided to allow expansion and thus intermittent lower pressure of the melt as it passes through the passage.

Abstract: The invention concerns extrusion dies for apparatus for producing seamless thermoplastic tubing. An elongate hollow core is provided extending through a bore in the extrusion head. The hollow core may carry service lines to downstream parts of the apparatus and may act as or may carry an inner mandrel extending coaxially in an extrusion nozzle. The invention provides hollow core, the diameter of which is not greater than the diameter of the bore of the extrusion head. Thus, it may be possible to withdraw the core in a downsteam direction for tool changes and the like without the necessity of dismantling the extrusion head.

  • Patent number: 5122049
Abstract: An extruder has a screw rotatable in a housing and an extrusion head having an upper part bolted to the housing and a lower part hingedly connected to the housing for movement between a closed operative position and an open position. The upper part of the extrusion head is located above the screw so that the screw can be removed from the housing when the lower extrusion head part is swung to open position and without removing the upper extrusion head part from the housing. The two extrusion head parts define between them a flow passage directed toward the upper roller of a calender. A movable lip on the lower extrusion head part faces, and is spaced from, the upper calender roller to define a variable gap through which extruded material must pass before reaching the narrowest part of the gap between the calender rollers. The lip is either pivoted at an upper edge or is slidable toward and away from the upper calender roller to vary the width of the gap formed between the lip and the upper calender roller.

  • Patent number: 5068069
Abstract: In an extrusion device of the type which has a screw rotating in a housing and which has a feed section in which a feed roller, cooperating with the screw, is provided, a stripper blade is used to remove the fed material from the feed roller. The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for maintaining the net force acting on the stripper blade to direct it towards the feed roller constant. To achieve this, the force of the fed material which acts in a direction tending to move the feed roller and the extrusion screw apart is measured. An opposing force is applied to the stripper blade in dependence upon the magnitude of the measured force. By so doing, the net force directing the stripper blade towards the feed roller is maintained constant.
