  • Patent number: 5851562
Abstract: A multiplate spin pack receives metered molten polymer and metered amounts of additive components selectively proportioned to produce desired characteristics in extruded fiber. The additive components are mixed together and blended with the polymer by passage through a pattern of mixer channels formed in opposed faces of spin pack mix plates immediately upstream of the spinning orifices of a spinneret. Mixing is produced by splitting the fluids into multiple paths and repeatedly converging the paths into boundary layer contact. Short flow paths of mixed polymer minimizes time and waste in change over procedures.

Abstract: Process and device for drawing off and blocking off a melt, especially of plastic material, with a heatable melter (1) fitted with a blocking valve (3) acting as a melt distributor from which the melt flows into a nozzle plate (10) which divides the melt by means of nozzles (14) into a plurality of threads, whereby the temperature of the melter and nozzle plate is regulated separately and the blocking valve is closed to block the melt off and the nozzle plate is tightly closed off by a cover (18). To draw off the melt with the blocking valve open, the temperature of the melter and the nozzle plate is kept substantially at the same level and to block off the melt with the blocking valve closed the nozzle plate is taken to a temperature just above the solidification temperature of the melt material.

  • Patent number: 5183671
Abstract: The fish food is in the form of a dense filament having a diameter of less than about 0.05 inch. The filament is produced by extruding a wad of viscous meal in an extrusion chamber and associated die. The preferred extrusion tool has a tubular member with an end piece containing a small aperture. The tool is held in one hand by a stationary handle, while the other hand advances a plunger through the tubular member, thereby extruding the filaments.

  • Patent number: 5165940
Abstract: High twist fibers are produced in a spin/quench/twist process directly from a modified spinneret. The spinneret consists of capillaries that are installed in highly elongated inserts which are surrounded by heat deflecting shields surrounded by an annular concentric orifice supplied with a fluid (air or steam preferred) that simultaneously quenches and twists the emerging filaments as they exit the capillary quench/torque jet.

Abstract: A melt spinning apparatus is disclosed wherein the spinning head is inserted in an upward manner from beneath into the lower end of a vertically extending opening in a heater box. Upwardly directed air currents are avoided in the vertically extending opening by providing a metallic contact, in the form of supporting and locking strips, between the heating box and the spinning head. The supporting and locking strips provide for the easy removal and insertion of the spinning head into and out of the heating box from beneath. The upper end of the spinning head is closed, and the internal walls of the vertically extending opening in the heater box and the external walls of adjacent spinning head are provided with internal contact surfaces which collectively define horizontal channels.

  • Patent number: 4790736
Abstract: An apparatus wherein there is provided a source of fiber forming material, with said fiber forming material being pumped into a die having a plurality of spinnerets about its periphery. The die is rotated at a predetermined adjustable speed, whereby the liquid is expelled from the die so as to form fibers. It is preferred that the fiber forming material be cooled as it is leaving the holes in the spinnerets during drawdown. The fibers may be used to produce fabrics, fibrous tow and yarn through appropriate take-up systems. The pumping system provides a pumping action whereby a volumetric quantity of liquid is forced into the rotational system independent of viscosity or the back pressure generated by the spinnerets and the manifold system of the spinning head, thus creating positive displacement feeding. Positive displacement feeding may be accomplished by the extruder alone or with an additional pump of the type generally employed for this purpose.
