Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an installation for the production of pressed-stock boards in a continuous sequence. The invention includes forming and transporting the mat of pressed stock on the molding and charging belt in a space bounded at the longitudinal sides. Two upright side supporting bands on the molding and charging belt run along and guide the pressed stock or the mat of pressed stock in such a way as to limit its width from the scattering station up to compaction in the prepress. The height of these side supporting bands correspond to the changing height of the press nip. The installation includes two side supporting bands arranged upright on the molding and charging belt, on both longitudinal sides. Supporting rollers bear against the side supporting bands in the region from the scattering station up to the prepress.

  • Patent number: 6190594
Abstract: Tool rolls and methods of using the tool rolls to manufacture articles with one or more structured surfaces are disclosed. The tool rolls include an outer surface that, when used in connection with materials of the proper viscosity or formability, can form a structured surface on an article. Because the tools are manufactured in roll-form, they can be advantageously used in continuous manufacturing processes. Alternatively, discrete articles may be processed using the tool rolls. The tool rolls are constructed of a cylindrical base roll and are wrapped with one or more continuous wires in a helical pattern. The wires are used, in essence, to form a structured surface on the tool roll that is the negative of the structured surface to be formed on the articles processed using the tool roll. One of the wires wound around the base roll may include a plurality of voids formed therein that, when wound in helical coils about the base roll, form a plurality of mold cavities on the outer surface of the tool roll.

This two-component structure also provides additional freedom regarding selection of materials for the base tool and the structuring surface. Thus the base tool can have a comparatively smaller thermal expansion and/or conductivity and the forming member can have a comparatively higher thermal conductivity.

Abstract: A device for controlling the thickness of a sheet in calendering includes a thickness measuring unit for measuring the thickness of the sheet immediately after it has been formed by a pair of calender rolls, and a roll adjusting unit for moving at least one of the pair of calender rolls toward and away from the other calender roll. The device further includes a detection unit for detecting change in distance between the axes of the pair of calender rolls, and a control device for comparing the measured thickness of the sheet with a target thickness to obtain a difference therebetween. The control device then calculates a gap adjusting value on the basis of the difference, and compares the change in distance between the axes of the rolls detected by the detection unit with the calculated gap adjusting value. When these values become equal, the control device stops the movement of the one calender roll to make the thickness of the sheet equal to the target thickness.

Abstract: An apparatus for bending a laminated thermoplastic sheet without displacing the lamina relative to one another includes a clamp which functions to hold the sheet during the bending procedure. A support is disposed adjacent the clamp and has a curved surface for forming a bend in the sheet and a flat surface which constitutes an abutment for the part of the sheet being bent. The support is adjustable to vary the angle of bending. A bending device for the sheet comprises a carriage having a bending roller, and a ram whose size approximates that of the flat abutment surface. The sheet is clamped with a portion thereof projecting freely above the flat abutment surface and heated. Actuators pivot the frames from a position in which the roller axes lie in the same vertical plane to a position in which the upper roller is swung away from the extrudate outlet so that a maintenance space is created between the extrudate outlet and the upper roller. This permits the use of a stationary electric motor for driving the lower roller, and so avoids the need for electrical contacts which compensate for motor movement.

  • Patent number: 4963309
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for processing elastomeric material in particular plastic, rubber and a mixture thereof in roller-head-apparatus in which the material to be processed is plasticized and homogenized in an extruder, extruded from an extrusion head provided on the extruder and then is led through an aperture formed between two rollers. It is the object of the present invention, with an especially simple extrusion head in a roller-head-apparatus to produce uniform and dimensionally exact sheets or foils of different thicknesses without changing structural parts. The invention achieves this in that material formed in plate form by parallel outlet surfaces of the extruder head is led through an aperture space formed between a concave cylindrical surface of a stationary forming tool and the circumferential surface of one of the rollers of the calender before the material enters the space between the two calender rollers.
