  • Patent number: 5141631
Abstract: A filter for flowing polymer having a filter element progressively advanced between an on-stream position communicating between the upstream and downstream passages and a backflush position. In the latter position, filtered polymer is forced through a segment of the element in the direction opposite to on-stream flow. The filter is advanced in steps alternately with the energization of a pump for creating the backflush pressure. The steps are determined to cause each filter portion to remain in the backflush position for at least two consecutive steps.

  • Patent number: 5125823
Abstract: Apparatus for filtering plasticized material between two discrete inlets and a main outlet of a housing has two passages each of which connects one of the inlets with the main outlet. Each passage receives a reciprocable cylindrical filter carrier which can establish or interrupt a path for the flow of plasticized material from the respective inlet to the main outlet, depending on the selected axial position of the carrier. In order to expel contaminants which gather at the upstream side of the filter in a carrier, the carrier which is to be relieved of contaminants is moved to an axial position in which the respective inlet is sealed and the space at the downstream side of the filter receives filtered plasticized material substantially centrally of the filter. Contaminants are expelled from the space at the upstream side of the filter by way of a second outlet which is provided in the housing and communicates with the filter chamber of the carrier which is in the process of being relieved of contaminants.

  • Patent number: 5032267
Abstract: In the filtering apparatus for an extrusion machine, a stream of heat-softened plastic material arrives via a flow conduit in a filter housing at an outlet, and thereby permeates replaceable filter means which are carried by a slide which is temporarily slid out of the stream of plastic material. • Patent number: 4973406
Abstract: A device for the separation of particulated solids from a pressurized fluid, in particular from a viscous mass of a thermoplastic material, with a cleaning system for the filtration element based on the "return pressure" principle. The device comprises a body having a fluid inlet conduit, two filtration assemblies that are connected to two conduits flowing together into an outlet conduit, and a flow-dividing valve that in rest position connects the inlet conduit with the separation conduits through the filtration assemblies, while in the cleaning position for one of the filtration assemblies the inlet conduit is connected with the other filtration assembly, thus causing part of the fluid that has been separated by this filtration assembly to pass with counterpressure through the filtration unit that is in the cleaning stage and through a discharge outlet housed in a compartment of the valve. In a similar manner the cleaning of the other filtration assembly is performed.

  • Patent number: 4892473
Abstract: An extrusion head for forming a two-part laminated sheet from a single tubular-shaped extrudate stream emitted from the outlet of a single extruder. The stream flow into an enclosed chamber which diverges the stream in width and converges it in thickness. This stream is split by a wedge divider insert which extends across the outlet end of the chamber into multiple parallel, horizontal streams. Each stream then passes through a breaker plate or screen to remove any foreign particles present in the extrudate. A converging preform die in combination with a triangular preform insert converges the upper and lower streams into a single stream at a final die producing the unitary two-part laminate, preferably symmetrical about the horizontal plane. The extrudate preferably is an elastomer and the resulting laminated sheet is used as a tire innerliner.

  • Patent number: 4849113
Abstract: An improved continuous polymer filter of the screen belt type employs a valve arrangement to selectively apportion the extruder output flow through at least two filter paths. In the neutral valve position both filter paths receive polymer at equal flow rates creating a pressure across the screen belts that is too high to permit the screen belts to be advanced when a clogged belt section requires replacement with a clean section. To effect screen belt advancement, the valve is actuated to reduce the flow rate in the filter path requiring the replacement while increasing the flow rate to the same degree in the other filter path so that the net flow rate remains substantially constant. The screen belt receiving the reduced flow experiences a sufficiently reduced pressure drop thereacross to permit it to be advanced in a conventional manner, after which the valve is returned to its neutral state.

  • Patent number: 4478516
Abstract: The constituents of a flow of thermoplastics material or the like are mixed and blended by passing the flow through a mixing structure which defines an array of elongate side-by-side passages. The passages are not all alike in that at least some of them have configurations which taper along their lengths to degrees or in directions that differ from the configurations of others of the passages, whereby the flows of fluid which discharge from the differently configured passages do so at differing velocities. As the discharging flows of differing velocities recombine to form a common flow having a uniform velocity, a desirable type of mixing and blending action results. In preferred practice, adjacent ones of the passages are tapered oppositely along their lengths to converge or diverge such that fluid flowing through the converging passages is caused to increase in velocity, while fluid flowing through the diverging passages is caused to diminish in velocity.

  • Patent number: 4434053
Abstract: A filter for removing solid contaminants from plastic melt as well as homogenizing the plastic melt prior to injection, including a generally cylindrical filter screen having an inlet passage receiving the unfiltered plastic melt. Axially arranged series of relatively large diameter holes extend between the inlet passage and filter grooves formed in the surface of the filter screen. A first stage, coarse filtration is achieved by flow through the holes radially outwardly from the inlet passage into each of the filter grooves. A second stage, fine filtration occurs by flow from the filter grooves through circumferential clearance spaces located between each of several lands separating the filter grooves and the interior of the filter cavity. Filtered plastic is collected in axially extending discharge grooves also formed in the filter screen surface intermediate the pairs of filter grooves.

  • Patent number: 4395212
Abstract: A screening apparatus for molten plastic material flowing from an extruder comprising a housing mounted on the extruder and having a feed channel for flow of the plastic material therefrom and a slide member mounted for slidable movement in the housing with a clearance therebetween. The slide member contains replaceable screen elements adapted for being positioned in the path of flow of the plastic material flowing from the extruder to effect screening thereof. In order to seal the clearance between the slide member and the housing to prevent outflow of plastic material therefrom, a flange is mounted on the housing to surround the slide member with a gap therebetween. This permits normal free-sliding movement of the slide member in the housing. The flange contains cooling channels to permit flow of a coolant to cool plastic material in the gap and solidify the plastic material to prevent outflow of plastic material from the gap.

Abstract: A filter pack (20) and method of making the same are provided. Finely divided inert material (23) is bound in the filter pack (20) for use in a spin pot. Essential elements are a wall (21) which defines a cavity in which the finely divided inert material (23) is placed, a cap (26), a first cover (25), and a first screen member (24) comprised of at least one screen having a mesh size which prevents passage of the finely divided inert material therethrough but which allows passage of a fluid therethrough. The first screen member (24) forms a press fit between the wall (21) and the first cover (25) to cover the exposed portion of the cavity. The finely divided inert material (23) is compressed in the filter pack (20) by the intrusion of the first cover (25) and the first screen member (24) into the cavity occupied by the finely divided inert material (23).
