  • Patent number: 7980281
Abstract: A groove bottom of a circumferential groove formed in a tread surface is provided with a protruding stripe extending along an extending direction of the circumferential groove. The protruding stripe is provided with a top head portion protruding toward a tire outer circumferential side, and a base portion which is narrower than the top head portion and connects the top head portion and the groove bottom. If a small stone is pinched, the top head portion is inclined around the base portion, and the protruding stripe is deflected as a whole, thereby generating a reaction force on the basis of a deformation restoring force.

Abstract: A mold device is described for use in a mold having a plurality of tread molding segments. Each tread molding segment has an end face for mating with an adjoining segment. The mold device includes a piston located on the segment and is actuated by the opening and closing of the mold. The piston is positioned within a first chamber and has a plunger end in communication with a working material and a spring. Each of the mold segments further includes a retractable blade assembly having a distal end in fluid communication with a second chamber. The first chamber is in fluid communication with the second chamber. Closing of the mold compresses the piston, forcing the working fluid to transfer from the first chamber to the second chamber, actuating the blade assembly.

Abstract: A method to cure a non-uniform rubber article uses one or more high thermal diffusivity pins in a mold to direct heat to the cure-limiting parts of the article to reduce the total cure time in the mold and increase the uniformity of the cure of the article. Reductions in cure time of up to 20% or more are achieved without substantially changing the function or degrading the performance of the article. The method is particularly useful for curing tires and treads for tires. Finite element analysis or thermocouple probes can used to determine the cure-limiting part(s) for the tire or tread. Using this knowledge, one or more of the high thermal diffusivity pins are located in the mold at positions to transfer heat into the cure-limiting part(s).

Vent grooves (13, 14) are formed in sidewall molding surfaces (4, 5) for molding sidewall parts in such a way as to extend zigzag in the tire circumferential direction, respectively. At least one vent hole (11 or 12) is formed in each of the vent grooves (13, 14).

Abstract: A green tyre is built on a forming drum and then transferred to a bead moulding and pre-vulcanisation station where each bead of the tyre is moulded by tightening it between two axially opposite clamping surfaces respectively carried by an axially external annular locating element and an axially internal annular locating element consisting of radially expandable circumferential sectors. The tightened beads can be pre-vulcanised through heat supply by means of electric resistors integrated into the axially external annular locating elements. The tyre with the tightened and possibly pre-vulcanised beads is transferred to a moulding cavity having an inner wall substantially conforming to the shape of an outer surface of the moulded tyre to carry out moulding and complete vulcanisation of the tyre.

Abstract: A vacuum forming apparatus for forming a tire, wheel, or other item in a mold having a cavity with the shape of the item to be cast that is contained in the apparatus. The vacuum forming apparatus utilizes a bell shaped outer cover arranged to seal along its lower edge to a mold base plate, and includes a canister maintained under a deep vacuum and arranged in or connected to the apparatus as a reservoir to receive a mixture of urethane constituents, with the deep vacuum removing air from that mixture, and the air free mixture is passed through a valve and into the mold cavity. A low level vacuum is pulled through a vent valve in the bell shaped outer cover to pull the flow of urethane material through the cavity, filling the mold. With the cavity filled, the canister valve is shut and the vent valve in the bell shaped outer cover is closed, allowing the urethane material in the mold cavity to cure, and the mold is broken open and the cast item is removed from the cavity.
