Abstract: Pastilles are formed by passing small quantities of a viscous material through small openings and onto a moving conveyor surface located therebeneath. The viscous material is contacted by the conveyor surface after the material protrudes from the openings, but before the material becomes sufficiently large to break free and fall. Instead, the conveyor surface forcefully extracts the material from the openings, thereby resulting in the formation of pastilles which are of smaller size than would have been the case had the material been allowed to break free and fall on its own accord.

Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring the production of elongate profiles which are formed from one or more mixtures of rubber or thermoplastics material in an extrusion head which is fed by one or more extrusion devices. The profile passes through a cooling zone in which longitudinal shrinkage of the profile occurs. The actual shrinkage is monitored and compared with desired shrinkage by a control device which controls the drive means for the extrusion devices. The profile also passes over a weighing device which determines the weight per unit length thereof, with the weighing device also being operatively connected to the regulating or control means. If a deviation from the desired shrinkage in the zone or station is ascertained, the regulating device sets a new, corrected, desired weight per unit length value to be achieved at the weighing device. To achieve this desired weight per unit length, the drives for the extrusion devices are each adjusted by a uniform amount by the regulating or control device.

Abstract: A rotatable accumulator roll which may move substantially horizontally or vertically is disposed between the die of an extruder and a take-away conveyor to minimize the effects of output surging of the extrudate from the die of the extruder in order to maintain substantially the dimension of the extrudate as delivered to a constant speed take-away conveyor. Variable force is applied to the roll to maintain tension on the extrudate.

  • Patent number: 4556382
Abstract: A die assembly for generating a green tread extrudate for pneumatic tire fabrication is presented. Fundamentally, the invention includes a preform die of fixed configuration, having passages and openings therein for passing both a base stock material and a cap stock material. The openings are separated by a partition. Upper and lower final die plates are then formed to communicate with the openings, one for the cap stock, and the other for the base stock. The configuration of the die portion of the die plates control not only the external geometry of the resulting extrudate, but also the geometry of the junction between the cap stock and the base stock in the extrudate. The invention accommodates a broad range of tire specifications with the simple change of die plates.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for supporting, guiding and temperature-treating a continuously moving rope of puff extruded farinaceous food material of generally C-shaped cross-section. The moving rope is supported and cooled from below by a stream of air exiting from openings in the upper edge of a former bar, which is positioned below the rope and extends into the concave portion of the cross-section. Air is directed downwardly onto the top and sides of the moving rope from a plenum chamber and nozzle assembly positioned above the moving rope.

  • Patent number: 4508500
Abstract: A differential pressure calibrating tank for sizing and cooling just-extruded duct having electrical cable extending through it includes a duct inlet opening and a calibrator head adjacent to that opening for sizing the just-extruded duct. Differential pressure across the walls of the duct tends to keep the duct in a round cross-sectional shape. Flexible conduit in the duct and fixed relative to an adjacent extrusion die but movable in the tank precludes contact between the duct and cable within it while the duct is still molten. The flexible conduit precludes sticking or adherence between the insulation of the electrical conductors and the duct inner walls. In addition, an improved means is provided for restraining the duct submersed in the water as it traverses through the differential pressure calibrating tank. The means for restraining the duct includes, in part, a perforated tube situated within the tank having an inverted V-shaped channel traversing the length of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4487731
Abstract: A process for producing a foamed synthetic resin body comprising continuously extruding a foamable thermoplastic resin extrudate composition from an extruder die into a reduced pressure zone, subjecting the extrudate to an expansion molding step, a cooling-hardening step and a cutting step while transporting the extrudate through the reduced pressure zone to obtain a foamed piece of predetermined length, shutting off a portion of the reduced pressure zone surrounding the foamed piece from the other portion thereof when the foamed piece has reached a specified position to restore the foamed piece surrounding portion to a normal pressure, subsequently discharging the foamed piece into the atmosphere, and thereafter bringing the surrounding portion into communication with the reduced pressure zone again upon reducing the pressure. Foamed resin bodies of desired expansion ratio and shape can be prepared continuously with high cooling efficiency. An apparatus for practicing the process is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4486369
Abstract: Foam extrusion apparatus and methods employing a vacuum chamber at reduced pressure into which foamable material is continuously extruded, hardened and cut to length, means for inventorying a plurality of successively cut lengths in a second chamber then at such reduced pressure, and means for discharging the inventory from the second chamber to the outside after the second chamber has been brought to atmospheric pressure without affecting the reduced pressure in the vacuum chamber. Stacking devices are employed to inventory the cut lengths in either a vertical or horizontal stack for transfer as a stack into and/or out of the second chamber. Provision also is made for accumulating the boards in close but spaced facial relationship with substantially the entire surface areas of the cut lengths exposed to the reduced pressure prior to stacking and discharge to the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4395427
Abstract: A depositing apparatus for the manufacture of shaped food product includes a hopper having an open top for receiving a prepared mix. Feed rollers positioned within the lower end of the hopper force mix through an extrusion die assembly. The die assembly includes an elongated plate defining a plurality of apertures and supporting a plurality of dies in coaxial relationship with the apertures. A variable restrictor is supported at each of the apertures for varying the effective open area or flow area of the apertures. The flow area may be varied to compensate for variations in weight, consistency or volume of the mix so that relatively uniform weight shapes are deposited onto a conveyor passing underneath the feed hopper. The variable restrictor includes a pair of opposed plates having edges configured in a complementary fashion to the cross-sectional shape of the die. A drive is operably connected to each of the plates so that they may be moved towards and away from each other into the aperture.
