Mandrel To Interiorly Support Work And Means Urging Work Against Mandrel Patents (Class 425/393)
  • Patent number: 6991447
Abstract: A pleating machine (20) is provided which allows extremely rapid, uniform pleating of flexible, tubular bodies (28), thereby eliminating the arduous and time-consuming task of manual pleating. The machine (20) includes an upper, stationary, female tubular jaw (90) and a lower, reciprocal, male tubular pleating jaw (92) which are oriented in superposed, substantially axial alignment, along with a drive assembly (26) serving to vertically reciprocate lower jaw (92). An elongated rod-type body support (24) extends downwardly through the upper jaw (90) and presents a pleating surface (88a), so that upon reciprocation of lower jaw (92), the jaw lugs (105) successively engage the body (28) to form pleats (162, 164). The pleats (162, 164) are retained by keeper structure including inwardly extending female jaw segments (98) and weighted slide (89) mounted on support (24).

Abstract: A thin wall PTFE tube is formed from an extruded green tube. The PTFE tube includes an inner tubular surface and an opposed outer tubular surface defining a tubular wall of a first thickness. The tubular wall is compressed to uniformly reduce the wall-thickness and circumferentially orient the tube. The PTFE tube is positioned over a first elongate roller with the inner tubular surface being in contact therewith. A second roller is positioned against the outer tubular surface of the PTFE tube. The pair of rollers are counter rotated so as to circumferentially compress the tubular wall between the rollers. This results in the uniform reduction in the tubular wall from the first thickness to a lesser second thickness and a circumferential orientation otherwise not occurring in an extruded PTFE paste extrusion.

Abstract: Methods for making a tubular device that has a rim disposed at one end thereof. In one method, a sleeve having an expandable profiling surface is inserted into an end of the tubular member, and the profiling surface is expanded to form a shoulder projecting outwardly from the tubular member adjacent the end of the tubular member. The profiling surface is collapsed inwardly away from tubular member, and a return margin is formed directed inwardly from the shoulder, distal the tubular member. In another method, return margin of the tubular device adjacent an end is folded inwardly and superposed on an inner surface of the tubular device adjacent the folded margin. A sleeve having an expandable profiling surface is inserted into the end of the tubular device, and the profiling surface is expanded to form the rim comprising a shoulder projecting outwardly from the tubular member and the return margin. As a result, the fold between the shoulder and the return margin defines an edge of the tubular member.

  • Patent number: 6419475
Abstract: A method for treating a roller cover includes the steps of positioning an element with respect to a roller cover and removing a portion of the roller cover with the element to form a pattern on the roller cover. The process for treating roller covers for a paint roller may also include the steps of providing a surface, forming a pattern on the surface, heating the surface, and contacting the roller cover with the heated surface. The heated surface is a metal. The heat is transferred from the heated metal surface to the roller cover when the heated metal surface contacts the roller cover. The heated surface sears or melts the nap of the roller cover. The surface can be provided with a pattern so that a pattern can be placed into the nap of the roller cover. An apparatus used to treat the surface of a roller cover includes a surface having a desired pattern therein. A holder for a roller cover holds or presents the roller cover to the surface. A heater is attached to the surface.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for producing a hollow plastic section by extrusion through a die in a horizontal direction. The die has an inner mandrel which forms the cavity in the section. A first sealing plug and a second sealing plug, which sealing plugs are situated at a distance from one another downstream of the inner mandrel are attached to the inner mandrel. The sealing plugs are designed, during operation of the apparatus, to lie in the hollow section, such that they are sealed against the section, so that the sealing plugs and the section delimit a compartment in the cavity of the section. The compartment is filled with a liquid during operation of the apparatus. Vent means are located in the compartment for receiving and discharging gases or vapor which collects at the highest point of the compartment.

  • Patent number: 6364649
Abstract: A roll forming apparatus for rolling selected materials around a cylindrical core. The apparatus comprises a core support, a roll support device, and a material supply device. The core support is used to support the cylindrical core. The core support has an associated core rotation device for rotating the core about a core rotation axis at a controllable rotation rate. The roll support device supports a plurality of forming rolls positioned to surround the core about the core rotation axis. The roll support device has a roll control mechanism operable to both radially position the plurality of forming rolls relative to the core rotation axis and to constrain the plurality of forming rolls to be equally spaced from the core rotation axis in order to provide integrated adjustment of the plurality of forming rolls to control a radial dimension of a substantially symmetrical forming space defined by the plurality of forming rolls.

Abstract: An improved pipe belling process is shown which a gasket is installed on the outer working surface of a forming mandrel at one circumferential location. The heated socket end of a thermoplastic pipe is forced over the mandrel exterior and over the gasket causing the heated socket end of the pipe to flow over the gasket and form a retention groove for retaining the gasket before again contacting the working surface of the mandrel. The heated end of the pipe is cooled and retracted from the working surface of the mandrel. The gasket has a non-stick, anti-friction coating applied to portions of the exterior thereof.

  • Patent number: 6302676
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for manufacturing a slide fastener spiral continuous element row wherein a monofilament is carried on a mandrel while ensuring an accurate pitch of elements even in a high-speed operation and a stepped form of an upper leg portion can be accurately formed at a predetermined portion of each the element. In order to continuously manufacture the slide fastener spiral element row from the continuous monofilament made of synthetic resin, the monofilament transferred continuously is wound spirally around the mandrel and carried while being retained between screw grooves of opposed screws. Then, a coupling head is formed by hitting a portion of the spiral monofilament carried on the mandrel by a pressing roller, the portion corresponding to the coupling head. After that, a stepped upper leg portion is formed by pressing a portion of the spiral monofilament by a rotary hammer at a predetermined position on the mandrel, the portion corresponding to the upper leg portion.

  • Patent number: 6220846
Abstract: An apparatus for conferring a cup shape to the terminal junction segment of pipes that are bi-axially oriented longitudinally and circumferentially and hence very sensitive to diameter and length reduction through heat. The apparatus includes a furnace which heats the segment to a differentiated temperature, increasing towards the end of the segment such that the inner diameter of the terminal segment progressively drops down to a controlled value as temperature increases (whilst length is simultaneously reduced, with a corresponding increase in thickness of the wall of the terminal segment). Preferably then, in an appropriate station, an additional heating is executed to a plastic deformation temperature suited to obtain a correct preliminary dilation of the terminal segment upon introducing a rigid element which acts as inner contrast, thereby inhibiting any retraction thereof.
