Abstract: The invention pertains to apparatus for casting polymeric gels from volatile mixtures of monomers in open molds. The principle of the invention resides in the fact that the same concentrations of volatile components present in the polymerization mixture are also present in the gaseous state within a protective gas maintained above the free surface of the polymerization mixture, the gaseous volatile components being in the equilibrium state with those in the polymerization mixture at polymerization temperature. The apparatus includes a main pipe branch which introduces a pure protective gas into a polymerization apparatus and at least one auxiliary pipe branch for saturating the protective gas with a volatile component.

  • Patent number: 4979888
Abstract: An apparatus for reflow smoothing a molded article made by first heating a face of a mold at a first station, then applying a fusible synthetic resin to the heated face and thereby melting the resin into a continuous coating covering the heated mold face at a second station spaced angularly from the first station, and cooling the coating and mold at the second station until the coating hardens. To reflow smooth the article, the surface of the cooled coating is then smoothed by confining the mold and hardened coating in a substantially closed chamber at the second station and reheating the confined coating until its surface flows. Thereafter the coating is cooled again at a third station angularly spaced from and downstream of the second station until it hardens and the hardened covering is stripped from the mold at a fourth station angularly spaced downstream of the third station and upstream of the first station.

  • Patent number: 4954062
Abstract: An automated casting apparatus for use in slip casting is described. A rotatable table assembly is provided for retention of a plurality of plaster molds therein. The table assembly is provided with a clamp member to secure the molds in their relative positions within the table assembly to prevent slippage during rotation. The clamp is controlled by a rotational motor and will apply a predetermined amount of pressure on each of the molds by use of a load detector which will shut down the motor once the predetermined pressure has been attained. Once the molds are securely positioned within the table assembly, the assembly is rotated 90.degree. to its "fill" position where the automatic filler can sequentially fill each of the molds with liquid slurry or slip to a predetermined level whereupon the filled molds are allowed to sit in position for a predetermined setup time which establishes the wall thickness of the castings. The table assembly is then rotated 180.degree.; pouring the excess slip from the molds.

  • Patent number: 4716003
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the waste neck area in a mold of vinyl cast articles such as automotive arm rests, head rests and parts of similar construction includes a powder box of gellable material having a supply spout with its exposed outer surface area covered by a liner of heat insulating material; a waste inlet neck on a heated, machined nickel mold is sealed by the liner when the powder box is joined to the mold. The powder box spout is at room temperature and shields the inlet neck to prevent gel build-up on the inlet neck to effect considerable cost by both a reduction in waste deposits of gel and a reduction in labor required to trim a waste area on the mold. To obtain the coating, the mold is coated with powdered vinyl (hereinafter gellable material) by casting from the powder box to the mold and the excess material is removed from the mold by dumping it from the mold into the powder box.

  • Patent number: 4705660
Abstract: To produce a pipe in a centrifugal molding process in a rotating mold, axially parallel oriented fibers are fed in parallel to the axis of the mold, decelerated in the mold, and accelerated, without a change in their orientation, transversely to their feeding direction. A device for performing this process comprises a chamber (3) which can be introduced into a rotating mold (14) and has an outlet opening (10) for cut fibers. In the chamber (3), a rotatable vane (5) is provided which is connected a disk (9) oriented transversely to the axis of rotation (8) of the vane, this disk lying in opposition to the feed conduit (1) for fiber material (2) terminating in the chamber (3). The surfaces of the vane are parallel to its axis of rotation, and so the orientation of the fibers parallel to that axis is maintained.

  • Patent number: 4695244
Abstract: The present invention consists of a spindle arm for use in batch-type rotational plastic molding machines. The invention herein includes two cylindrical arms, one end of each arm attached to a gear housing and extending therefrom in a common axis. The gear housing contains gears for providing connection between and transmission of rotation from, a driving shaft, extending from the gear housing, to a driven shaft, extending through the gear housing in an axis perpendicular to the driving shaft. The end of the driving shaft extending from the gear housing is attached to a drive sprocket, the sprocket providing for releasable connection to a drive motor of the molding machine. The driving shaft is contained within one of the cylindrical arms and is rotatably supported therein. The other cylindrical arm is attached, on the end extending from the gear housing, to a second drive sprocket for providing releasable connection to a further drive motor of the molding machine.

  • Patent number: 4687531
Abstract: Thin-walled structures of substantially uniform wall thickness are made by rotating a heated mold surface about a horizontal axis and depositing powdered thermoplastic material onto the mold surface at a rate such that the deposited powder melts on contact with the mold surface and adheres thereto. A high degree of uniformity of the wall thickness is ensured by depositing the powder onto a relatively small portion of the overall mold surface and reciprocating the powder deposition means in the direction of the axis of rotation of the mold surface to thereby uniformly cover the entire mold surface.

  • Patent number: 4683098
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the waste area in a mold for an article molded from a heat-fusing material by a powdered vinyl process, has a mold box disposed adjacent the backside of a mold surface for controlling the temperature over respective first and second areas of the mold surface. The waste area elimination is accomplished by isolating and insulating the section of the mold defining the waste area. A kerf is cut into the mold around the waste area to isolate the area. The kerf is filled with castable silicone to insulate the waste area from the heated segments of the mold. To obtain the coating, the mold is filled with powdered vinyl and the excess material is removed from the mold by dumping the plastisol from the mold into a return tank.

  • Patent number: 4634360
Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing multiple color thin-walled hollow shells for parts such as automobile door panels, consoles and instrument panels from dry thermoplastic plastisol includes a supply box with a divider to form two or more compartments in the box. The box divider cooperates with selectively positioned split mold parts defining a separation in an open-ended heated mold for separating the mold into two or more sections. Complementary open ends of the charge box and mold are joined. Then the apparatus is rotated so that the powder is distributed into each mold section by gravity flow with the powder from each section flowing to the divider which separates the colors so as to form two or more tones on a resultant shell of cured material; thereafter the powder box is removed and the split mold parts are joined to clamp cast shell segments for fusion at a joint line.

  • Patent number: 4611980
Abstract: Disclosed is a fiber reinforced thermosetting resin cylindrical shaped product manufacturing apparatus and method using a cylindrical forming die body having open axial ends and rotatable about its longitudinal axis. A cantilever beam body is positionable within the die body so as to extend along the die body longitudinal axis. The cantilever beam supports a suspension stand which is either movable or fixed. The suspension stand includes a reinforcing fiber feeding apparatus, a liquid thermosetting resin feeding apparatus and freely rotatable pressing rollers. A resin hardening agent feeding apparatus can also be included. While the die body is slowly rotating about its longitudinal axis, fiber reinforcing material is fed onto the die body and resin, possibly including a hardening agent, is fed thereto. This mixture is then pressed by the freely rotating rollers as either the suspension stand or the die body itself is axially moved.
