  • Patent number: 5108277
Abstract: An apparatus is located downstream of an extruder for cooling extruded material exiting the extruder. The apparatus includes a housing having a material passage. The material passage is dimensioned so as to have a larger cross section than a cross section of the extruded material. The apparatus further includes a system for controlling the temperature of at least a portion of the housing. The apparatus further includes a plurality of fluid passages in the housing and connectable to a source of pressurized fluid for providing fluid communication between the source of pressurized fluid and the material passage in the housing. The fluid passing through the fluid passages changes to a temperature having a value functionally related to the temperature of the temperature-controlled portion of the housing. The pressurized fluid passing through the fluid passages supports and cools the extruded material as the extruded material passes through the material passage.

  • Patent number: 4790736
Abstract: An apparatus wherein there is provided a source of fiber forming material, with said fiber forming material being pumped into a die having a plurality of spinnerets about its periphery. The die is rotated at a predetermined adjustable speed, whereby the liquid is expelled from the die so as to form fibers. It is preferred that the fiber forming material be cooled as it is leaving the holes in the spinnerets during drawdown. The fibers may be used to produce fabrics, fibrous tow and yarn through appropriate take-up systems. The pumping system provides a pumping action whereby a volumetric quantity of liquid is forced into the rotational system independent of viscosity or the back pressure generated by the spinnerets and the manifold system of the spinning head, thus creating positive displacement feeding. Positive displacement feeding may be accomplished by the extruder alone or with an additional pump of the type generally employed for this purpose.

  • Patent number: 4457975
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for fabricating insulated cables, particularly polymeric insulated electrical power cables, resistant to the formation and growth of electrochemical trees is disclosed. Internal pressure on the conductor side of the cable is maintained lower than the external pressure on the outer surface of the insulation during extrusion. Extrusion pressure higher than the external pressure results in expansion of the insulation following extrusion. This expansion or swelling reduces the number and size of cracks and voids which are precursors of electrochemical trees. In addition, pressure curing the extruded, insulated cable with a curing medium above its melting point followed by gradual gradient cooling under internal pressure and higher external cooling fluid pressure to around room temperature optimizes the resistance of the cable to nucleation and growth of electrochemical trees.

  • Patent number: 4416607
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously extruding, biaxially orienting and intermittently forming molded products from a web of thermoplastic material and further, continuously separating the products from the web selvage, stacking and handling the products and recycling the web selvage for further extrusion. The apparatus uses intermittent molding and biaxial orientation devices into which configuration the continuously extruded web is interfaced by continuous-to-intermittent interfacing loop arrangement which preserves the dimensional and orientational integrity of the web and maintains sufficient thermal stability therein to provide molded products which are free from defects such as stretch marks and other inertial and thermal discontinuities normally anticipated in cases of intermittent web advance of thermoplastic material at thermoformalbe temperature levels.

  • Patent number: 4416601
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously vulcanizing a covered material on a conductor comprises a feed device for feeding the conductor in one direction at a constant speed and an extruder for applying the covered material to the conductor fed from the feed means. A vulcanizing tube extends from the extruder, the cable passing through the vulcanizing tube. The vulcanizing tube has a curing section extending from its inlet to a location intermediate its inlet and outlet. A take-off device is disposed forwardly of the vulcanizing tube for hauling the cable. A load applying device is disposed between the extruder and the take-off device for applying a load to the traveling cable at a location forwardly of the curing section of the vulcanizing tube, so that a tension exerted on the cable in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the cable is applied to the traveling cable.

  • Patent number: 4388061
Abstract: A guide assembly for blown plastic tubes to guide and support the tube after its extrusion from a die consists of a frame carrying a plurality of pairs of vertically-extending members distributed circumferentially around the tube. Each of the vertically-extending members carries a plurality of vertically-spaced parallel radially-inwardly-extending arms. Each arm of one vertical member of the pair cooperates with a respective arm of the other member of the pair, each cooperating pair of arms having a flexible wire support member extending between these ends, the wire engaging the tube and conforming to its circumference. As the tube diameter decreases the arms are moved simultaneously radially inward by opposite rotation of the respective vertical members, whereupon the wire conforms to the new reduced diameter, and vice-versa. The actual contact of the support member with the tube is by side-by-side cylindrical rollers (e.g. of nylon) threaded on the wire.

  • Patent number: 4356143
Abstract: In an apparatus and a method for the curing of a continuous length of curable material, the length of material is passed through a curing chamber defined by a tubular body 47. This body 47 is disposed in the upper part of another heated tubular body 2 which contains a heat exchange liquid. This liquid is fed to one or more injectors disposed at one or both ends of the body 47, injected along the chamber and then allowed to drain back therefrom into the body 2. The body 2 contains a further tubular body 58 downstream of and partitioned from the tubular body 47. Body 58 also has an injector 60 through which water is injected to cool the length of material. Tubular body 47 may be provided with drain holes through which heat exchange liquid can be quickly drained at the end of a curing run. It may also be provided with air vents or a longitudinal slot in its upper part to release trapped air.
