Abstract: A method of building a Pre-stressed composite part is described herein. The method includes: fabricating a Pre-stressed composite part with a Prepreg (Pre-impregnated—already Resin coated fabric or tape) ply layup on tool or mandrel; laying conduits at desired locations and to be embedded with chopped fiber (metal or composite); inserting a steel cable into the conduit center and a calculated tension applied to the cable and held by jacks; filling the conduit with a special resin with hardener and allowing the resin to set until the cable is locked in the resin with the applied tension in the cable; removing jacks and leaving permanent anchors at both ends of conduit; applied cable tension creates compression in the part to take more tension for the loads and hence cable tension gives extra strength to the part.

Abstract: In the manufacturing method of the present invention, as preparation for providing a mold 30 with protrusions 31 and 32 to be printed on an FRP material of a skin 1 in co-bold molding, which requires resetting of the skin 1 to the mold 30, a long protrusion 32A and a short protrusion 32B are interchangeable as one protrusion 32. The long protrusion 32A is printed to form a second recessed part 12 in the skin 1, and before the skin 1 is reset, the long protrusion 32A is replaced with the short protrusion 32B. Abstract: A sealing unit for sealing a gap between a pair of surfaces, the apparatus comprising a nozzle for injecting sealant into the gap; two or more rollers; an endless track which passes round the rollers; and a curing device for directing energy into the gap to initiate cure of the sealant. The sealing unit is moved along the length of the gap. A sealant is injected into the gap from the nozzle and the track is rotated around the rollers as they are moved along the length of the gap. The track is pressed onto the first and second surfaces so the sealant in the gap is constrained by the track to lie substantially flush with the first and second surfaces. Energy is directed into the sealant with the curing device, the curing energy initiating cure of the sealant. The sealing unit is moved along the length of the gap at a rate such that the sealant becomes sufficiently cured when it is in contact with the track so that the track can be peeled away from the sealant as the track rotates round the second roller.

  • Patent number: 6913454
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for attaching filamentary members to a substrate are disclosed. The substrate includes a plastic layer and the apparatus includes an anvil, a needle and a swaging tool movable relatively to the anvil. The method includes the steps of penetrating the substrate with the needle to create an opening, positioning the filamentary member in the opening, and compressing the substrate between the swaging tool and the anvil so as to deform the plastic layer and swage the filamentary member to the substrate. The needle is heated to melt the plastic layer so that it fuses with the filamentary member upon swaging. Motion of the needle and swaging tool is controlled by cams under the command of a microprocessor control unit. A substrate to which filamentary members are swaged is also disclosed.

Abstract: Fabric reinforced structural components having a predetermined configuration are produced by first assembling a plurality of preforms prepared as semifinished fabric products. Each preform has a configuration that approximates a portion or section of the predetermined configuration of the finished product so that an assembly of the several preforms resembles approximately the predetermined configuration. The assembly is then compacted between two tool sections. The compacted assembly is then impregnated with a matrix forming resin which is then cured. The compacting is performed in a molding tool that includes the two tool sections placed in a flexible vacuum bag that is evacuable. When the compaction is completed the plurality of preforms together have the predetermined configuration of the structural component within a permissible configuration tolerance range.

  • Patent number: 6739861
Abstract: The composite molding apparatus includes a rigid base member and a complementary semi-rigid mold member or “black bag” caul plate having a sieve member formed therein. The sieve member layer of the semi-rigid mold member engages pins which extend from the sandwich core to limit penetration into the semi-rigid mold member to a predetermined depth. The semi-rigid mold member is supported relative to the rigid mold member by the pins to provide uniform pressure transfer to the composite article during a high pressure co-cure molding process without crushing the sandwich core.

Abstract: There is provided a mold component which makes it possible to mold a substrate for an optical recording medium which enables a functional layer having a uniform thickness to be formed thereon without using a resin-coating assisting member. A stamper holder holds a stamper thereon, and has a generally hollow cylindrical shape. An insertion hole formed through a central portion of the stamper has a diameter which is larger than an outer diameter of a cavity-side end of the stamper holder at a higher temperature of the holder than a normal temperature, and is slightly smaller than the outer diameter at the normal temperature of the holder. The cavity-side end inserted into the insertion hole at the higher temperature of the stamper is grasped by a rim of the insertion hole which is reduced in diameter at the normal temperature of the stamper.

  • Patent number: 6524510
Abstract: A trim component (1) includes a substrate (2) and two different cover materials (3, 4), which are not spliced together but are independently adhesively bonded onto the substrate (2) by a hot-melt contact adhesion. The junction (7) is received in a valley (6) of the substrate that is pinched closed using a molding apparatus that includes a horizontally movable pinching stamp (13) which forms a pinching gap (16) relative to a protruding edge (11A) of a fixed mold tool (11). A tucking blade (22) cooperates with a counter-clamping blade (26) to clampingly hold and then press the substrate and junction of the cover sheets into the pinching gap. The tucking blade is then retracted while the pinching stamp pinches closed the pinching gap, to form a tightly closed valley in the substrate with the junction cleanly pinched therein.

  • Patent number: 6524414
Abstract: A method for producing ceramic composite bodies, in particular, cylindrical ceramic bodies for sheathed-element glow plugs, in which a plurality of shaping sleeves, which accommodate piece parts premolded by cold pressing, are inserted into corresponding bore holes of a vertically standing supporting plate that is heated via additional bore holes with the aid of cartridge heaters or a heat transfer liquid. The vertically standing supporting plate with the shaping sleeves is then clamped between two press plates of a press, and the piece parts located inside are subsequently pressed by press pins which, on both sides, pass through the press plates and into the shaping sleeves. Upon completion of the necessary pressure keeping period, the pressed compound, after retraction of the press pins and opening the press, can be hardened in a non-pressurized manner in the shaping sleeves located in the withdrawn supporting plate that is subjected to further heating.
